I'd have to say Gary Jules' version of "Mad World" and Spiderbait's "Ghost Riders in the Sky"

Over my Head by A Day to Remember. I don't know who did the original.
Everywhere by Yellowcard. Again I don't know the original artist.
Toxic by A Stgatic Lullaby. The Britney Spears one.
Smooth by Escape the Fate. I think the original is by Rob Thomas.
Plus others already mentioned.

I love Joy Division, but Nine Inch Nails' cover of Dead Souls was so much better than Joy Division's version.
that was joy division orginially? ohh well there you go

anyway I like BOTH jhonny cashes and nine inch nails "Hurt" they both work in different ways

Nine inch nails is more self loathing, dark and haunting there jhonny cashes is more about sadness looking back on the good and bad in life

Any song ever written by Tears for Fears and covered by anyone else. Ever. Justin Bieber and Miley Cyrus could team up to cover 'Everybody Wants to Rule the World' and I'd probably like it better than the original. (Well, maybe not that, but you get the picture.)

For a specific example of this: the Gary Jules version of Mad World.

The only two I can think of right now is Alien Ant Farm's 'Smooth Criminal' [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CDl9ZMfj6aE] and Nirvana's 'Jesus Don't Want Me for A Sunbeam' [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YdyqXSa5Bzc].

is there nothing more beautiful than orchestral versions of popular music?
Yeah, tons of stuff, like the original versions.

Hendrix might have made the most popular version, but for me Bt4's performance of McCreary's version caps all - it just has so much awesome :D

Dave Matthews' and Bear McCready's All Along the Watchtower covers:

I'm just seconding 'All Along the Watchtower' by Bear McCreary. The first youtube video's poster (video doesn't work embedded, has better visuals, but worse sound quality, so I recommend the one I re-quoted), said that the moment that this song plays in full force, was the climax of the series (the end of Season 3 in BSG), and this music just added to it.

I'm ashamed to say, although I've heard both separately, it didn't even occur to me until now that the Jimmy Hendrix version, and this composition were the same song!

Edit: Technically, since Bob Dylan made the original, I prefer this to that, but I think this just beats the Jimmy Hendrix version anyway, since it has more rock.

I prefer Streetlight Manifesto's cover of Linoleum to the original version by NOFX.

There's also Reel Big Fish's amazing cover of Take on Me.

And finally, Dan Potthast's cover of The Big Sleep.

I sometimes like to think I'm open when it comes to music, but that's usually not true at all.
What happens is I get so used to the original that I have a hard time accepting the cover.

Especially when I enjoy/love the original.

haha, touche good sir. that is true though now that i think about it... but you gotta admit that this song sounds awesome that way, and deffinately better than metallica's version.

Definitely agree with AAF-Smooth Criminal and I have to agree with Loc978 on this one:

Ronnie James mothafuckin' Dio still did it better [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bkysjcs5vFU], in my humble opinion.
Have one or two to add. Glanced through and didn't notice them but I am out of time for playing on here so I may have over looked them in my rush.
I believe the original for Love Song was The Cure. It could have been a cover for them also, not sure. I tried to look it up but you can imagine the search results for Love Song in any context and the time thing. I am kind of curious if it was an original for them now though. I actually enjoy both versions but like 311's just a bit more.
Scarlet Begonias-The Greatful Dead (I dislike it entirely. Sorry to any Dead Heads that may happen along.)

"Bitches Ain't Shit" by Ben Folds http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dSJxvi767kQ

"Reptilia" by FourPlay String Quartet http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WlM1XEIWhsU

I also like Tool's version of No Quarter. Not as much as the original though

My favorite cover songs ever are; "Feeling Good" by Muse, "I Just Don't Know What to Do with Myself" by The White Stripes, "All Along the Watchtower" by Jimi Hendrix, and "Twist and Shout" by The Beatles.
