Beefy Baseline.
I just died a little inside.

Anyway, this has already been said before. Primus, Iron Maiden, Rush, and Megadeth tend to have very strong bass parts. Keep away from punk though. Most punk bassists ride roots for most of the song, which is technically okay, but makes for disappointing listening for bassists like myself.

Try some PIL (Public Image Limited) "Second Edition" to be specific. That Album has some crazy and hypnotic bass lines. This is dance rock music to space out to, you gotta get it. Also, try XTC's "Drums and Wires" and "Black Sea" good stuff there too.
Got all three of those. It's not as easy to hear XTC's bass as PiL's, but I definately agree.
I hear you, but once you pay attention to XTC's you'll be hooked to those deep basslines; I particulary like the ones for "Helicopter" and "Roads Girdle the Globe" on "Drums & Wires" and "Smokeless Zone" and "Rocket From a Bottle" on "Black Sea".

Wow I don't think anybody has said Sabbath yet. What's wrong with you people! Geezer Butler's got some awesome bass lines. NIB, Ironman and Supernaut are my personal favourites to play at the minute.

Also lots and lots of Lamb of God. Check out "Now you've got something to die for", "Redneck" "Black Label" and "Laid to Rest".

You may notice a total indifference to rock

Are You Gonna Be My Girl - Jet. Playing this on Rock band really made the bass lie stand out, and what a bass line it is.
...but it's a complete rip-off of Lust For Life.

My turn

If you want some upright bass goodness - So What by Miles Davis, some old Tom Waits (before he went crazy), a bunch of John Butler Trio, Paul Chambers (he played for Davis and Coltrain back in the day) get into jazz man.. Pletty of upright in that.

If you want some BEEFY basslines get into Reggae. One of my lectures toured with the wailers (bob marleys band) and said you couldnt hear the bass but my you oculd feel it.. It was more of a rumble. Also lots of metal bass is hidden under the mix so rather then hear it you feel it.

If you want some some bassists look at Jaco Pastorious, Victor Wooten, Stu Hamm and Stanley Clark.

If your looking for popular songs/bands with good bass - Rush, Iron Maiden, The Who, RATM, The Clash (punk band with good bass?? What??) Cake, Opteh, Dream Theater, Tool, Mudvayne, RHCP, Bootsy Collins (anything Bootsy plays in is funky) and uhh.. funk, jazz and fusion in general has some pretty great bass.

Yay bass

You'll probably hate it, but I'll go ahead and say either "Bow Down" or "Brace Legs" by Born of Osiris. Also "Chelsea Smile" by Bring Me The Horizon has some interesting stuff going on.

Either way. If you don't like the screaming you should tune it out, because the intstrumentals are awesome. Particularly BOO, being that they are Technical/Progressive Deathcore.
