My turn
If you want some upright bass goodness - So What by Miles Davis, some old Tom Waits (before he went crazy), a bunch of John Butler Trio, Paul Chambers (he played for Davis and Coltrain back in the day) get into jazz man.. Pletty of upright in that.
If you want some BEEFY basslines get into Reggae. One of my lectures toured with the wailers (bob marleys band) and said you couldnt hear the bass but my you oculd feel it.. It was more of a rumble. Also lots of metal bass is hidden under the mix so rather then hear it you feel it.
If you want some some bassists look at Jaco Pastorious, Victor Wooten, Stu Hamm and Stanley Clark.
If your looking for popular songs/bands with good bass - Rush, Iron Maiden, The Who, RATM, The Clash (punk band with good bass?? What??) Cake, Opteh, Dream Theater, Tool, Mudvayne, RHCP, Bootsy Collins (anything Bootsy plays in is funky) and uhh.. funk, jazz and fusion in general has some pretty great bass.
Yay bass
