The fact that his friends are in it and there is talking also puts me off give me a pure fast game play based sonic game like on the mega drive and I'll play it.

I don't want all that mess that they ruined it with.

If you say that you want Sonic to give up everything good he's done in the last few years
Lame plots, unbearable voice acting, outdated cheesy mannerisms. Yeah It would be nice if they got rid of that and went back to the gameplay

EVERYTHING is being overshadowed by Skyrim right now. It's a shame, but the truth.

I, for one, am glad to hear they made another good Sonic game, but I won't be stepping out of Tamriel for quite a while to enjoy it. Maybe in 4-6 years...
Skyrim, Assasin's Creed: Revelations, Modern Warfare 3, Saint's Row 3, Need for Speed: The Run, Halo Anniversay.
There's far too many popular games that have come out that overshadow Sonic, not just Skyrim.

Have you guys played Sonic Generations yet? They fixed Sonic. They made a god Sonic game again. Hell, they made an AWESOME Sonic game. Even the Modern Sonic bits are fun to play, and it has my personal favorite special stage out of all of the Sonic games (fighting Metal Sonic). We all thought it was impossible, but they did it!

GO TOTENC!
Okay, at the risk of sounding like a fanboy, why does EVERYONE keep forgetting about Colors? That got almost as good a response as Generations, yet everyone either keeps forgetting about it or neglects it. And don't even get me started on the Advance/Rush series.
May I suggest a theory?

See, despite the Wii outselling both the 360 and the PS3, I reckon most of the people who really appreciate and grew up with Sonic have become hardcore gamers, due to older gamers typically wanting more of a challenge or game depth than casual gaming can provide. As a result most of them probably don't play on or own a Wii, thus Sonic Colours being overlooked by them.
I could be wrong as hell, just my two cents.

Also I did read your whole post, don't get me wrong.

That sounds pretty plausible. Still though, people bash it without even trying it- and that's something I just don't tolerate with any game. (Though I can understand bashing stupid concepts. Sonic's certainly had those before <_< )

To echo many others here, Generations is being overshadowed by many other games. Had this game released on the actual 20th anniversary in June it might've got a bit more acclaim, but right at the height of Triple A release season it was always going to be overshadowed.

Furthermore, Generations is the game the fandom wanted. It's a re-imagining of the best bits of the main console games from the last two decades. Which is great for the fandom, they'll lap it up instantly, along with all the in-jokes, references, unlockable music and art as well as the big massive collectors edition statue, CD, DVD, shiny box set. But that doesn't really appeal to those outside the fandom.

Platformers are, unfortunately, no longer the popular genre. Back in the days of Sonic's origin's in the early nineties Platformers mattered. The consoles of the time couldn't hack hyper-realism, or even the third dimension. Hence the trend at the time was platformers, because the software could not only handle it, but make it look limitless. Shooters were still mixed with platformers, with bullets that only fired in eight directions, which killed the realism somewhat.

Lets also not forget that at the time the target market was kids. Teenagers and adults (the target market for pretty much all the games that are overshadowing Generations) weren't overly considered. Hence a great looking, quick platformer about a cartoon hedgehog was the biggest selling game on a system. In addition, certainly after 92/93, Sonic wasn't just a videogame. There were two cartoons, and a comic (well, two, but as a kid i doubt you knew what was going on the other side of the pond). Sonic was really popular, the big playground craze. You put Sonic on something in the early ninties and it would sell on the star power today, star power he no longer has due to a decline in reputation, the fad ending, and that generation growing up.

Finally, Sonic is Sega's mascot. He is the face of the company. When Sega was a hardware manufacturer, a new Sonic game was a big deal, so much so that Sonic 3D was remade for the Saturn to give the console a Sonic game, as Sonic Xtreme fell through. Not launching with a Sonic game would be like Nintendo launching a console and then never making a Mario or Zelda for it. But since Sega is now just a third party publisher, Sonic titles are less relevant in the overall scope of gaming.

Tl;dr Sonic is no longer as important as he once was due to Sega's actions, and due to the original audience for the game growing up and wanting games about dragon hunting/realistic shooters, hence Generations is overlooked by all but the hardcore Sonic fanbase.

I tried it. Loved it. However, since I'm not from the "generation" (Get it?) that most of you escapists are from, I can only really do the seconds acts.

Now I'm waiting for my brother to finish it so I can play it through.

Is he turned off by 2D gaming? I remember when I was his age and 3D games were all the rage. When I had my N64, I was always annoyed when I saw that a game played out in 2D, because my logic was- it's the N64, why can't they do it in 3D? Now I'm older and I know better, though.
I think that's a part of it. He likes 2.5D games (he's actually playing Brawl right now) but he tells me that he hates Sonic as a character. I told him about both Sonics being in the game but there was still a lack of interest. I mention him at all because I would have though kids his age are the target audience. Obviously, the older players were in mind but this, like most Sonic games, are made primarily for the kids...who likely don't care.

There's not more cheering because it's just modern 3D Sonic (which sucks) and modern 2D Sonic (which sucks) with a classic Sonic skin over it.

And Colors sucked too. That game is god damn boring as hell. I also laughed when someone brought up the terrible Advance and Rush games.

Sonic is dead. SEGA just needs to stop trying already and let him rest in piece.
Modern 3D Sonic has been tweaked a bit and it's classic 2D Sonic, not modern. He handles like the old one and even has a similar character model.

His friends are barely in this game, actually. You see them in maybe 2 cutscenes, one micro cutscene for each one of them when you save them, and then you see them pop up in missions sometimes. And missions are practically 100% optional. You just need to do one mission per zone, and there is a lot of variety in them (many don't even have his friends).

Also, Classic sonic plays almost exactly like Genesis sonic (the physics are spot-on perfect, IMO), and Modern sonic plays amazing as well, taking the best of unleashed and Colors, and making it better.

If you were or are a fan of sonic, at the very least, give this a rent. It's damn good.
