Sony Claims Kinect Helped Market Move

It's one thing to be bringing out a new motion controller, but it's quite another to be part of a wave of motion gaming.

It might seem that Move and Kinect launching so close to each other would be a cause of concern for Sony, but Shuhei Yoshida, head of Sony Worldwide Studios, said that it actually helped Move by generating more coverage around motion controls in general.

Yoshida said that Sony considered itself fortunate that Microsoft made such a big deal about Kinect, as it didn't think that Move would have gotten as much coverage without being part of the broader category of motion gaming. He also thought that being able to compare Move to Kinect and the Wii made it easier to highlight what was really unique about Move.

Sony has made good use of the comparison, including Kevin Butler's on-stage appearance at E3 were he joked about having to use fingers as guns on Kinect, and the websites "Move vs. Stuff [http://www.movevsstuff.com/]" and "Yay Buttons [http://www.yaybuttons.com/]," which take playful jabs at the competition, while simultaneously showing off the advantages and capabilities of Move.

Move launched last week to quite favorable reviews [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/editorials/reviews/previews/8116-Hands-on-Impressions-of-PlayStation-Move], and Kinect launches on November 4th.

Favourable reviews... good to see something not completely half-assed.

Still I shall wait for Kinect... my brothers getting it and to be honest I can't wait to give it a try.

Nothing, its a Wii Remote with a glowing bellend, which is tracked by the PSEye camera, which enables 1:1 motion tracking with the incoming feed, along with accelerometers and gyroscope and whatnot to track motions inside the actual wand.. thing..

See, much as the wand looks stoopid, I do, at this stage, prefer it to kinect. Sony are right, the accuracy is (presumably) far better and dammit you need some form of buttons for the majority of serious games, if only to move your character around.

I think he's got a point. Sony was like: "Here's a technically advanced peripheral" while Microsoft was like: "This shit is the biggest thing to happen to games since Gabe Newell!!! OMFG! Check it out! Here, come to our 50 billion dollar launch event with flying couches and music stars, bitches".

Ofcourse the hype rubbed off at Sony. I find it admirable that they've taken this so lightly and promoted it as an interesting peripheral to enhance games rather than the second coming.

I can't wait to see what people will think of Kinect, especially since all I've heard so far is that it's frustrating and annoying.

I shall wait until there is a game that needs the Move to enhance the gameplay. Until then, I shall not purchase it.

That or when I have a few hundred dollars lying around, being lazy.

Apparently development of it started in 2001... or so Game Informer tells me, they could be lying.

Unique? A Wiimote with a glowing bobble?
Apparently it's a whole lot more precise and generally better than the Wiimote. But I dunno, I've never used one.

Well good for Sony I suppose? I hope it doesn't fail miserably, a good opportunity to dick around and make oneself look like a knob is always amusing :)

On wikipedia it said that they were prototyping it before even releasing the eye toy...

So if that is true then could we really say Sony copied the wii mote or it was coincidince.

It was basically just a part of the EyeToy project, a more primitive version of Kinect, and abandoned until they decided to jump on the motion controller bandwagon. The final product is something more akin to the Wii Remote, and would have never seen the light of day if not for Nintendo's success.

You might recall that Sony were actually mocking Nintendo for making motion control standard for the Wii, when it was first announced. They had absolutely no faith in the concept, and no plans to make anything, no matter how much they want us to think otherwise now.

That "Yay Buttons" site makes me want to go buy Move.

I'll resist, but the site was still pretty awesome.
I loved "Yay Buttons". Very nice sense of humor.

Sadly I can't say the same thing about "Move vs. Stuff".

"Yay Buttons" is some random pointless rant. Yes it's a button, you push it and it does stuff.
It's kinda funny cause both of the websites are made by playstation so they can word it any way to make it seem better. Like the other site "Move Vs Stuff" I'm not saying Kinect or the Wii is better. Just both the sites seem like politicians that run campaigns to say how bad the other one is.
