Touch screens? Sorry, but no. My Ipod touch has too many fingerprints smeared all over it because of a touch screen, and sometimes the controls are iffy, because my hands are naturally sweaty. Besides, what's wrong with a pair of joysticks?
obviously they're moving parts, that's the problem.

Does it also play on EVERY game console in the universe? No.
Then it is not a universal controller.
Does it Control peoples MINDS?! then it's not a universal controller.

this is an interesting idea, and would be alot cheaper. Reminds me of the 80's when sometimes you could literlly take another companies controller and plug it in and run. Probly wont be able to be made for one legal reason or another
If you have two systems and eight friends, yes, it would be cheaper.

But most people have 1 or 2 controllers. $100 in today's market for them new. *edit* combined

This thing will be at least $80 each.

And then you have to take into account that the wear and tear you put onyour controllers are spread across multiple pairs, whereas all that stuff will be on one controller. I said this earlier in the thread, but I see this as a more expensive option for people.

Neat and it would reduce the clutter, but would ultimately cost you probably twice as much as you do with regular stuff.

Good idea, Horrible implementation

Sorry but i like to have physical toggle buttons on my controller. Don't want to constantly having to looking down to see if my fingers are still hitting the right 'inputs'

now if it has LED buttons that can display different symbols and can be moved this would be great.

Problem is, lego doesn't want to share his blocks.

LCD touch screen display?

How many of you press a button harder and harder on frustrating levels?
This'll end up bad for some people. ;)

If they could get that to work- it would be quite amazing just to see in action before I would buy it

Notice how controllers have become more and more ergonomic(save for the PS series) every generation. This stops you from getting that progress. If htey make it really well, it's fine, but as controllers gain more and more features, they'll have to keep up with the new stuff.

Just saying. It's not a problem. Just an observation that we might be seeing people buying the three main consoles and then a couple of these.

playstation and 360 are similar, but one has 6 axis, the other has rumble. And Sony made it clear while first pitching the idea of 6-axis to the consumers that these two technologies were fundamentally incompatible.
Due to customer demand, the PS3 SixAxis became the DualShock 3 (with rumble) in 2007, and has been available in the US since 2008.

I concede, I was out of the loop on that one.

The original PS3 controller however did not, and the 6-axis was to blame according to sony.

A touch screen would be absolutely stupid, for so so many reasons, and how is it going to emulate the wii well?
The same way the current experimental wii emulators on the pc work: mouse and mousewheel for wiimotion plus.

That's cool I guess.

Just hope the design don't suck like the PS3 contollers...

I'm sorry, but this idea/patent is about as realistic as the perpetual motion machine. At least/especially as far as backwards compatibility is concerned.

It all pretty much died with the Sega Genesis.

It could work, in theory, maybe three generations(human for emphasis) from now when the current generation is long extinct, the console manufacturers have signed some sort of unity deal/armistice treaty, and the controller technology has all reverted to simple on/off switches, but right now it's most likely just a giant "back-off" patent from Sony--agreeing with some earlier posts here.

Not to take a shot at Sony, but backwards compatibility on the PS3 for the PS2 is far more relevant to the real world. (Owner of one[all current consoles] btw)

I suppose we all can dream/defend patents though.

wow, I concepted something like this at uni last year
And if you used a term like 'concepted', you probably weren't in university for long.
LoL, I still am. It seemed an appropriate word considering the lack of an electrical engineering background, I basically had to do a bit of guesswork on the feasability and functionality of a multiplatform, touchscreen controller. It never got beyond the concept phase...

Sony owning a universal game controller denying Microsoft and Nintendo money on their controllers? This can not end well.

Well if the price is right! I'll be one of the first to pick one of these up.. This sounds like such a good idea, and will be 1 step closer to my dream where sony, microsoft, and nintendo all worked together to make the ultimate system! LOL

Yah that'll never happen, but it would be really interesting!!

This is a terrible idea. And LCD screen? Please. I'll be looking down at my controller half the time just to make sure I'm pressing the right buttons. I like to be able to feel what I'm pushing. It will be overly expensive and difficult to use.

I'm sure it's a fantastic and revolutionary idea in theory, but ulitmately impossible to pull off in a satisfying way. I expect Microsoft and Nintendo would have a few words to say about the matter as well, and not of the "Wow, what a great idea!" variety. Give me my normal PS3 controller any day.
