I'm sorry, but this idea/patent is about as realistic as the perpetual motion machine. At least/especially as far as backwards compatibility is concerned.
It all pretty much died with the Sega Genesis.
It could work, in theory, maybe three generations(human for emphasis) from now when the current generation is long extinct, the console manufacturers have signed some sort of unity deal/armistice treaty, and the controller technology has all reverted to simple on/off switches, but right now it's most likely just a giant "back-off" patent from Sony--agreeing with some earlier posts here.
Not to take a shot at Sony, but backwards compatibility on the PS3 for the PS2 is far more relevant to the real world. (Owner of one[all current consoles] btw)
I suppose we all can dream/defend patents though.
