I mean- it would be like if I left on the teacher's desk saying "Tommy" with the words "That's what you get." when the windows are busted up.
That is a lovely metaphor.

From the horse's mouth. [http://blog.us.playstation.com/2011/05/04/sonys-response-to-the-u-s-house-of-representatives/]

Well tough. EITHER Anon is anyone who calls themselves that OR Anon is a specific group of people.
Anon is the former. Anyone who says otherwise is incorrect.
So if I murder someone and leave a note saying it was Anon, I would not only be a member or Anon, but Anon commited the murder?

I think you know this logic fails. My point is, Anon is a group that aims for not just net neutrality but champions many humanist issues. Anything falling outside of that is just hackers/griefers/thiefs doing shit that happens everyday.

I like what Anon Ops does, especially now that they are working with Wikileaks.

I said this in the other thread but I think it's FAR more likely that a group of people (Anonymous) staged a hack for the LULZ, maybe even left their "We Are Legion" tag, but once the door was open an individual or two who may have been in on the hack decided to stick around and steal some shit...it's like a group breaking into a bank and then saying "OK, we're the awesome...we proved to the world that we could break in! Now we're leaving without taking any cash right guys...hey where's Carl?...Oh, he said go on ahead, he'll catch up in a minute, I think he forgot his duffel bag, dunno why he'd bring an empty duffel but you know Carl...Hey there he is...I must have been wrong about that bag being empty, looks kinda heavy..."

Then a week later "what do you mean the bank was robbed and people are pissed? Yeah we were THERE, but we didn't do THAT...and ever since that first time we've had an alibi...we've been riding in Carl's new car...sweeet ride....he got himself a new computer and a big screen too...dunno how he got it on a Gamestop paycheck, but he must have saved up pretty well...so see...NONE of us could have robbed that bank!"

In practical terms, 'Anonymous' is really represented by the outward-facing bits, the IRC server where they coordinate operations and so forth. Even if the attackers are part of anon, unless the anon community actually took part in or organized for the operation it would be sort of silly to blame the group as a whole.

Anyway, stealing credit card numbers isn't their style, and isn't something the group as a whole would stand behind.

I would piss my pants laughing if it was an anon-hater trying to frame them.
Still doesn't effect me much, offline games are awesome.

Great. Good for you Anon. You a such a shining example of all the is good and righteous. Oh wait... I mean the exact opposite of what i just typed.
Normally I'd say this was overly whiny and dramatic.

But frankly...I miss playing people games :(.

I was having fun checking the PSN each week to see what was added and the fact that it was free was really pleasant.

So I think I'm on boat with you now. Screw those guys if they did do it :/.

Seriously? A random file called anonymous containing the words "We are legion", a well known anonymous slogan? No. This is bullshit. I want something more concrete.

Frankly the entire type of hack is something that doesn't fit anon's goals, it's not targeting PSN, it's targeting PSN's users.
TBO, I see this as a good thing, especially if its a hacker covering their tracks. Now, at least there is a chance that Anon will help out with the investigation in order to clear themselves of this. Which, especially as it will be affecting potentially millions of PSN users, will be a very, very, good thing.

I know people would be quick to point out "honor amongst thieves," however, the important thing to remember is that Anon definitely does not want to be seen as thieves.

Now wouldn't it be interesting if all of this eventually got solved with an Anonymous tip?

EDIT:

I believe that it was this site that had that quote, and said that Sony had not officially pointed the finger at Anon for those files found.

And honestly, it doesn't mean anything. Just because that was there doesn't mean they did it, because if that's the case, than Anon did all the attacks on the WBC

It's just not Anonymous' normal "MO" to leave a note like that, especially one with only a fragment of their creed. This reeks of someone outside the traditional members of Anonymous trying to throw blame their way to cover their tracks.

Quick question for everyone saying Sony is lying. Why? What do they have to gain from this?
Two things.

1. PR: This is a PR disaster for Sony, by putting the blame on an organization that is rather disliked and considered a considerable threat, they hope to reassure costumers that it wasn't their fault.

2. Legal: Similarly anon is considered a terrorist organization by the US government (and presumably others). This makes it far more likely that their legal responsibility will be reduced or at least lessened in court because a cyber-terrorist would be presumed able to compromise a secure network.

Of course, Sony isn't necessarily lying, but anon doing it is extremely unlikely, not their modius operandi.

So the reasons you ran an unsecured network, delayed publication, won't speak to Congress and are jeopardising thousands of people credit details are all down to Anonymous is it?

Because you found a little note that said "It was me, Guv. Bang me up. It's a fair cop."

Have you worked for the Police before, Hirai?
Hehe :D

I don't see how this matters. Whether the hackers responsible identify with Anonymous or not, it doesn't change anything. The people who did it did it, regardless what you call them or what they call themselves.

Nothing any "member" of Anon does includes the whole body whether they openly take responsibility or publicly deny having done anything. It's just a broad concept that encompasses a lot of people, all of whom have different goals and plans for reaching those goals. It's not like they're a corporation you can sue if you find evidence one of its employees has committed some crime against you; being brought down by one person who calls him/herself Anonymous doesn't implicate any other Anons directly.

Whether this information is accurate, a plant, or simple fabrication, it doesn't matter at all in the end.

i'm not saying they did or didn't do it, but [and correct me if i'm wrong] in Anon's "we're going to fuck Sony up" manifesto, didn't they state that if Sony didn't comply they were going to do more than target executives?

a leave-behind isn't much their style, but i'm simply saying this still could have been them, sony-scapegoating or not
