This is sure to pass because every half-baked, embarrassing, columbine-was-caused-by-Doom, hyperactive parent will stop reading at "Protecting Children" and throw everything they have at it's critics. Why is everyone trying to take over the internet?
it makes for a great propaganda machine.

Well, this isn't nearly as bad as SOPA/PIPA was. And just because it's co-written by Lamar Smith doesn't mean it's automatically an underhanded attempt to slip SOPA back on the line.

I'll keep an eye on it, but I won't be too miffed if this one passes. It appears to be little more than a matter of mandatory record-keeping. Just so long as the records are kept safe...

Catchy title, though. Not one for subtlety, are we Mr. Smith?

dirty move putting "childeren" in the name.
any SANE CP collector/lover would already have stuff like Proxies or TOR to protect his ass.
even if this where to pass it,s not going to change anything in that sense.
Except this is primarily about what it says it's about.

Additionally, I like how you know exactly what they would do. Well, you qualify it with "SANE," but that's kind of a "No True Scotsman" fallacy.

About two years ago, a man who was both a local teacher and a friend of the family was caught with child porn. The man is very intelligent and quite sane in any sense beyond whether you consider pedophilia and illness. If you do, then by definition, the overwhelming majority of CP collectors are already not sane, so....

Otherwise, he's fine. He's been mentally evaluated. He was still busted and is still guilty as sin. On a personal note, it's hard to reconcile the guy I knew for years with the acts he did. It's also hard to figure out why he didn't take more precautions. If I was a psychologist, maybe I'd have some insight.

I know anecdotes alone don't really demonstrate much, but it's kind of ridiculous to claim insight into the criminal mind here. Qualified or otherwise.

On the other hand, this only codifies into law what most ISPs are already doing due to the DMCA requirements, so it's not even changing the status quo, really.

Also, I'd like to point out that "Children" doesn't make a bill work. At the risk of sounding like a broken record, look no further than the INDUCE act, which was almost literally "Won't someone PLEEEEEEASE think of the children?"

Sorry, you just can't piss me off anymore, I've already lost complete faith in humanity and developed a misanthropic outlook on the world, I've concluded that this way I can never be disappointed by anything, if things turn out okay than I'm pleasantly surprised, if the world goes to shit, I get to relish in the fact that I fucking called it, I win no matter what.

Your ISP already stores all that info. And if anyone wants to read it they'd need a warrant. All this bill does is change that from a policy that all the ISP companies ALREADY FOLLOW into a law.

So what exactly is the problem?

Honestly, it seems like the only real danger in this bill lies in the possibility of adding elements of SOPA to it in order to have them implemented. Other than that, the bill on its own does not seem as bad. Definitely not ideal but not as bad as the ambiguous language which permeated SOPA.

I say keep an eye on how it progresses and then see if it even gathers enough steam for amendments to be considered.
