Looks like the 18 is the day. I wonder how many sites will join.
Will the escapist?

"And now I know. And knowing is half the battle."

If The Escapist joins this strike, it would only affect the people who are aware of this. Seeing as everyone on this website knows of SOPA, it would be pretty pointless.

Apparently some sites such as reddit are going to go offline on the 18th to protest SOPA. There's an online petition for wikipedia to do the same.

I just want twitter to go down so celebrities can find out about the bill and make PSAs about fighting it, then people will fight it.

Yeah, it would be incredible if Twitter and Facebook went down for the day, leaving a brief explanation as to why. Every celebrity in the Western world would find out all the unpleasant things about SOPA, and how popular speaking out against it would make them. Even if they do announce their opposition to the bill just for the popularity points, it'll still influence a lot of their fans, and cause one hell of a storm.

Are there any petitions for those websites to take themselves down for the day? I'd gladly sign them if I could find them.

Better yet, both Twitter and Facebook. Maybe Google, too.
Honestly, even if just Google went down, it would make an incredible impact.

For a moment there, I thought we were holding a strike against SOPA, torches and pitchforks style. Damn...

If we could get Google, Twitter, Facebook and Youtube to all go down that would definitely make an impact.

It would be great if Twitter, Facebook or Google went down but I highly doubt that will happen.

I tried adding facebook and twitter, but it'll only let me do one, so I picked twitter. Seems like more people use that daily to me.

Okay... I'm gonna be my usual pessimistic self when it comes to things like this...

This whole SOPA strike is a nice gesture, it's really heartwarming, but all the sites listed as 'striking' so far, no one is going to bat so much as an eyelash, nobody but internet junkies are going to notice those go down. I'm also going to predict that many, if not ALL of the major players such as Facebook, Google/Youtube and Twitter won't join in a 'web-strike'.

We'll see of course, time will tell.

Personally, I don't know how America will get through a single day not knowing what Snookie thinks.

Are you trying to bring down the system?

That might actually do something. If both Twitter AND Facebook were to go down on the 18th, we could get some good results. Wonder what the odds are of them going offline, though...?

Several big sites have already said they would pitch in. Reddit, the entire Cheezburger network, GoG, and Mojang/Minecraft. I've heard rumors that the HOLY FUCK sites are contemplating joining -- Facebook, Google, Wikipedia, and Youtube.

As long as Yahoo/Yahoo Messenger don't do down. I would be pretty freaking upset if I couldn't talk to my friends all day over this nonsense.

The whole point is to get peoples attention to this... if sites don't shut down because it "inconvenient" to people then people would never get the message and know what is going on.

Thats a lynching and is frowned upon in the civilized world...But the SOPA act is in America so it may be fine.
Putting aside that that's where I live...I'd say that the act which spurred this nonsense wasn't very civilized either. And we in Pittsburgh are a very civil society, being in a frigging commonwealth as opposed to a normal state. It is, however, a bloody fact that I could probably get the population in town to charge DC if I told them they made us lose that football game recently.
