I recently tried X3 and that plays alright. That's the 2 most recent space traders I believe.

The glory days were privateer 1 and elite 2.

Freelancer rules.
Would love to see another game in the Freelancer universe.
Just thought you'd like to know that Microsoft's pulled the Multiplayer Master server support. You want to play multiplayer, you'll need to download a mod that averts this, like Discovery Freelancer.

You might need to be more specific. There's two X3 games out there. X3: Reunion and X3: Terran Conflict.

Confusing, I know.

Also.. the X series (although deeply flawed I know).
One man's deeply flawed game is another's masterpiece.

The X series is pretty much the only space combat sim still going, XvTie, Iwar, Freespace, Freelancer etc. etc. all dead and gone. X is still going.
Annnd there's also the Evochron series...

I got both.

Anyone recommend a high graphics recent space flight sim? I would love one.
Nexus - The Jupiter Incident

The graphics are amazing (or at least they were for it's time, since it's from 2005. But it still looks GREAT, especially on a big screen) and has really great gameplay, although a steep difficulty curve.

I wasn't as keen on the space combat in UT2K4, mostly because the open space spread out the action and made it difficult to see the ships. It felt to me like lost potential, because I was so excited about the prospect of space combat in a shooter (especially in the Unreal universe, which I love).

You kind of have the Starfox series but that's kind of hit or miss, especially when they insist on taking you out of the Arwing for tank and (shudder) foot missions.

Freespace didn't die, it's still sitting there atop a throne made from the skulls of its competitors, looking down at those whom would dare to defy it's reign as the greatest space sim of all time.

In all seriousness though, if you want some amazing space sims, look up the absolutely *massive* fan community behind Freespace 2. See, a few years after the game came out the developers actually released the source code for the game online for anyone to play around with. For those not in the know, this is the holy grail of modding; for a game to have its full source code open for people to play with, and what few games have had this happen tend to become legends of the modding community. Freespace 2 is no exception.

There are entire fan-made campaigns, total conversions, everything out there all stemming from that source code. All completely free, and in some cases, not even requiring the actual game to run so they're completely independent projects. Essentially free fan-made standalone expansions.

Not only that but having the source code has allowed the community to edit and improve the basic engine beyond what it was originally capable of to such an extent this 11 year old game, or is it 12 now, continues to look fantastic.

That game was released in 1999. Link to the mod being shown.

The problem is that this genre really peaked in the mid-1990s, with Frontier: Elite II still being one of the most ambitious games ever made - 17 years later.
Now that's subject to perspective. Most ambitious? How are we defining that? Are we just talking in terms of what was possible for the time it was made? You may have a point there. But it certainly doesn't stand as the most advanced space combat/trading game ever made. Many games since have brought features to the table that are beyond the capabilities of Elite II.

Not the only genre. Flight Sims, cRPGs, Turn Based RTSs have same problems.

RTS stands for Real Time Strategy. There's no such thing as a turn based real time strategy game. You're likely thinking of 4x strategy games, aka Civilization and the like, which are doing pretty well these days actually and have always been a bit of a niche product.

Flight sims aren't really my thing so I've no clue how well the genre is doing, but cRPG are having a bit of a renaissance these days as well. Western RPG in general are doing better than ever actually!

I'd love to see a PC only X-Wing remake. Sorry console guys but they would have to dumb the game down for console controls.

Off the top of my head I can only think of Sins of a Solar Empire, besides everything else that has already been said and doesn't need to be repeated.

I call those TBS games, Turn Based Strategies, even though people thought I meant Turner Broadcasting Station...

One of the first games I ever played on a PC was Conflict Freespace, when I was about eight or nine. I absolutely loved that game, and have never found anything similar that I have enjoyed. I do think that this genre is endangered.

I had completely forgotten about that game, thank you for reminding me.

I encourage everyone to watching this clip, it really is breathtaking. Not simply visually, but in sheer scope and scale there has never been a game which even begins to compare to the vision of these developers.

No clue if they'll ever actually finish the game, but it's beautiful to watch in motion.

That works as well! TBS is a more broad term while 4x are a specific sub-genre, TBS can refer to everything from Civilization to King's Bounty and X-Com. I'm a sucker for strategy games so I know all the fancy jargon, what can I say?
