Also.. space combat too often just isn't that brutal and dangerous, and just becomes a case of wearing down enemy shields with anti-shield weapons then blowing them up with anti-hull weapons. Maybe a game where shields are non existent or pathetically flimsy (a la TIE fighter) and components get damaged when you get hit, forcing you to try and balance flying and fighting with running damage control
It would really be cool if you could do that in a space game. Like, say, Star Trek: Bridge Commander? Oh wait, you can!

I'd also recommend the X series. I recently got the X Superbox, and it's a good series. It's hard to get into the earlier instalments, but X3: Terran Conflict's easier.
Bridge Commander was friggin' awesome!!!
Good graphics, controls, story, everything. It even had cool mods. Heck, my friend & I even managed to make the single campaign into a 2 player campaign. He took 1 side of the keyboard, I took the other side & the mouse. The commands were divided nicely for that to work. Only once in a while did our key strokes step over each other to nullify our commands.

There's only one spaceship-based game I want to play. I am a leaf on the wind - watch how I soar.

Freelancer had the same problem as Wing Commander: Privateer - great game but no replay value and way too short of a campaign.

What do weddings have to do with space combat?

...ummm.... Well, I guess the link would be: The "bride commander" would be the groom, & since men make better captains than women, the grooms would be in charge.
Happy? :p

Typo corrected.

Oh come on, admit it. Everyone knows I'm right. After all, the Enterprise got propelled to other quadrants & even to the edge of the freakin' universe itself. Picard managed to get everyone back home within a week. Look how long it took Janeway.

Whatever happened to Yahtzee's space game? It was interesting to read what kinda troubles he was having, and how he fixed them :p
