Pardon me if I happen to be repeating someone else, but does anyone remember Yahtzee's point about God of War? And all the games that came out after it, that were so close that people called them all God of War clones? Well this is just the same thing. Enough of these types games get released, and people will just forget about these "rip-off" arguments. Hopefully, they will start to evolve in their own way too, and create their own fan bases like so many.

Just like everything that was a Doom clone, Need for Speed clones, Mario clone, Street Fighter, Grand Theft Auto, CoD, Counter-strike...you see what I'm getting at.

This is stupid. I am not going to read all the childish back and forth on this. Having played and loved Gears of War, and having played and loved, Space Marine, the only place they are close in any way or form is in the visual design department. They play completely different from each other. The reason you can't stick to cover is because cover is a byproduct of the world, it doesn't exist to be cover like cover exists in GoW. Gears has a non existent melee combat system, while Space Marine has a somewhat robust melee system. Each weapon has different combo's, different executions, etc. The guns somewhat similar, but not anywhere near clone status.

GoW is a great game.
SM is a great game.
And of the two, the MP is better on SM, that is my opinion.

I'm not surprised OXM said that at all. They reviewer probably didn't even play the game as much as put the game it, watch the title screen backround animation, then write a review.

Warhammer 40k may have arrived first, but it is a table top game originally, not a shooter. Gears came way after, but has been in video gaming far longer. This is the first step they(Warhammer) have taken away from RTS therefore it can thus be called a rip off or clone as it can more than likely be a clone of the game considering this is its first attempt at anything outside of table top or RTS. Stop complaining if someone noticed these similarities and felt the need to point them out and STOP COMPLAINING IF IT IS NOT AS GOOD IN THEIR OPINION, a game review is a personal opinion of the developer and if he/she felt the need to point it out and if he/she felt that way than THEY CAN BLOODY SAY IT WITHOUT BEING CRITICIZED BY ANGRY FANS OF THE GAME.

Okay, so any 3rd person game is a ripoff of GoW? Funny, I can remember plenty that came out years before it.... Giants: Citizen Kabuto is the first to come to mind. Messiah was a really good one...

Also, WH40k did have a couple FPS back in the day; one called "Space Hulk", and I can't quite remember the other one.

I think this whole debate comes down to people getting a "high" off of saying that something that someone else likes is a ripoff of something they like. It is seen in music most commonly...

well, I just watched some gameplay footage, and from what I can tell, its a 3rd person shooter full of grunting macho men who make loud clanking noises every time they take a step who enjoy shooting at, and/or taking chainsaw-ish weaponry to hordes of ugly things filled up with highly pressurized cherry pie filling that have invaded, Nope, nothing in common with gears at all.

Albiet 40k seems to have more than 4 colors, which is a plus

Granted 40k came first, but to someone who hasn't played 40k,(or just as likely someone who doesn't care who came first) is going to compare it to something familiar to joe average 360 owner

EDIT: Also I hate space marines, in general, not the just 40k ones, too much 80s esque testosterone

Wow. First W40K rips off content from Blizzard's Starcraft IP, and now they've ripped off gameplay from a third person shooter.[footnote]I sure hope people read this footnote, as that sentence is meant to be a joke[/footnote]

OT: I hope that one day more "gamers" will acknowledge the term genre and what it stands for.
You almost caught a snipers round till i saw your marker light at the bottom.

Gears clone? Really? I was hoping that reviewers would be more enlightened.

You're right. Space Marine does ripoff Robert A. Heinlein's military science-fiction masterpiece Starship Troopers. See you on the bounce!
Come on you apes! You wanna live-forever?

I always call Starship Troopers the grand-daddy of Space Marines but in this game, the combat is far too slow and close to be called a rip-off.

What's with this stupid "Warhammer came first, that means it's better!" stuff going about? All this started out by one reviewer saying that the controls where similar because you switch weapons with the D-pad and that it looks similar. That's kinda stupid as Battlefield Bad Company lets you switch weapons with the d-pad too. God I hope that doesn't mean some genius let Haggard into the Blood Ravens or one of the other charters.

The aesthetic point brought up is stupid. Both games go for the gritty, dark, gory as hell depiction of war. You're gonna have some parallels in the games looks.

Back to the "it came first", I know what yall mean. This new upcoming Aliens Colonial Marines game is clearly ripping off Space Marine! Yes, here you have angry cursing space marines taking the fight to those inhuman xeno.....morphs! Forget a mere aesthetic resemblance these guys are going after key plot points! Just as Space Marine draws it's roots from the Warhammer 40K tabletop game that started in 1987, this game dared to be based of the movie Aliens which came out in......1986. Huh.........

How dare that Robert Heinlein fellow! Having a bunch of burly men in bulky power armor with stupidly overpowered weapons such as a nuclear rpg fight those damn bugs which are very clearly just freaking rip off the Tyranid!

My point is look at culture, literature, technology hard enough and you'll find outside influences in damn near everything. Sometimes to prevent stagnation people will take cues from other's works to improve their own. Warhammer 40K takes from books like Heinlein's works and from movies like Alien and it's sequel Aliens. You can not tell me that the tyranids creatures are completely original works after doing a side by sie comparison of all of them to the xenomorphs and their queen from Aliens. Hell, I think GW may as well just hire Giger. Same goes for the fantasy version Warhammer. Yes, Warcraft took more than a few pages from Warhammer's books, but then again Warhammer can't complain as it did the exact same to Middle-Earth. Then Warcraft took some pages directly from the source. Lich King, Witch King?

"At its simplest, Space Marine is a Gears clone."
3rd paragraph, first sentence.

I'm pretty sure you switch weapons using the bumpers, not the D-Pad.

The guy who wrote that is a idiot. Its been said in just about every other comment but im going to say it as well. SPACE MARINE CAME FIRST AND GEARS COPIED. Aside from the fact both games have you wear power armour their is no comparision. Gears has you hiding behind cheast high wall's while space marine encorages you to be in the fight and you know act like the walking tank your playing. I think one is better than the other.

Their is allso the complaint that their arnt enough of the epic scenes like using the jump packs and so on. The fastest way to ruin something is to overdo it.

This guy shouldnt be writing reveiw's.

I agree that space marine and gears of war have similarities in their execution, but that can be said of almost any 2 games from the same genre.

They also have their differences, the main one being that titus plows into the enemy like a freight train with a chainsword, while marcus fenix takes the slow, steady approach from cover. They both have their merits, and both make for fun, playable games.

I happen to be a huge gears fan (owning the first two and pre ordered the third) but also a big warhammer fan and looking forward to trying out the full game of space marine. However, the relatively short campaign I am hearing about and current lack of xbox live membership will probably make this game a rental only for me, at least until the price goes down.

I think it is a real shame THQ didn't add co-op for the campaign or offline for the multiplayer but I guess my itch for those will be scratched by gears 3 instead.

Smashing orks and chaos marines' skulls in with a giant hammer is still gonna be fun, I just hope the game is a success so more races get added with dlc!

Gears of War was basically Warhammer 40k: The Game...

Yeah, I can't stand how that guy J. R. R. Tolkien ripped off Eragon. What a loser. >_>

Jetpack and thunder hammer...
I never had more fun in any game ever.

"Can't catch me" WHAAAMMM
That hammer was so much fun, I used it even when other weapons would be
better for the situation.

And executions to regnerate health? Hell yeah, Space Marines don't hide
behind cover until all the jam is gone from the screen.

Multiplayer is a bit broken, I suck so hard with the raptor/assault class...
I mostly use the tactical marine.
Looking forward to the DLC next month.

Except Space Marines aren't gay
Why would there be no gay space marines? Space marines need love too you know?
Most are castrated and after the implants, genetically similar. Gay Space Marines would be like...bro incest.
Have you read how they procreate? They're pumped full of strength hormones (Testoreone/Steroids), given a pseudo-womb with a pseudo-ovum, which on their death, is torn from them and implanted into another manly male soldier.

So...yeah...no inclinations towards heterosexuality there at all. It would be more accurate to call it Pseudo-necro-bro-incest. There's a meal time thought for you.
