Space Marines

I don't think people actually hate Space Marines: I'm assuming your talking about the Yahtzee-esque bashing on "Yet another game with space marines". The hate is not towards space marines per say. It's more that its so common a genre, it muscles out other potential, more original IPs.

Why is there such hate for the Space Marines on this site? They are out there fighting for YOUR Space Freedom and Space Rights.

Can someone explain all the Anti-Space Marine attitudes?

Yeah while killing and enslaving all other who dont want those 'space rights'
And its the most obvious trait of a new player into the game : space marines.
Can we please just drop the whole space marines thing?

Space marines represent a naritive cop-out on the part of writers. It answers the following questions:
Why is this character going into this dangerous situation?
How did he get to be so tough?
Why does he take orders form some one I have no back story for?
Come to think of it I have no back story for my character is he good or evel?

with the same answer:
Because he is a Space Marine.

Anyways I don't hate space marines, they aren't the worst idea in the world. All the stupid ideas in Too human were. God that game was crap...

Thats my opinion anyway. Couldn't they do a cool name? I mean, Necrons has a cool name. Eldar have a cool name... Chaos Space Marines have... Well, the same name with a Chaos glued to it and that sorta sucks, but you get my meaning here?!

But they do get cool names.
Space Wolves, Emperors Fist, Salamanders, Blood Ravens, Grey Knights, Black Templars, White Scars, and why not, the Ultramarines.

Green iz Best though.

I thought about it some more, and I think what pisses me off about them is their tendency to wear power armor, which makes them seem overpowered. Worst of all, if the protagonist happens to be one of them...
I don't really mind that in 40k or Starcraft, because the pricks die just as easily as normal humans would, but the one-man-army image of them that is portrayed in Gears of Halo-Life is rather irritating.

The best example of well done space marines I can think of at the moment is from BSG; they were just average soldiers, who happened to be on board a spaceship. They still seemed real, albeit just for the purpose of being cannon fodder

Well to be fair the 40k chapters can be cut down as easily as anyone when facing the Tyranids.
Fluff wise Nids rip though power armor, even terminator armor, like rice paper with those claws of theirs.

For future reference OP, you might want to clarify which Space Marine you are talking about when making a discussion unless you want everyone to start talking about the first Space Marine that comes to mind.

Everything gets approximately 151.93% cooler by putting the word 'Space' in front of it.
(Subject to diminishing returns upon additional applications of the word)
Example: Chicken? Lame. Space Chicken? You'd pay to see that.

I think the WH40k Space Marines are totally badass. They have rib plates instead of ribcages, two hearts, three lungs and can spit acid. Plus some other nasty stuff. The fact that they're mindless zealots kinda reduce the coolness.

Starcraft space marines are just plain cool, in a more human way too.

loved your OP. I've got nothing against space marines, in most cases they're entirely sound. But Yahtzee said they're dicks, so what Yahtzee said must be true.

For several potential reasons
1, because they're WAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYY too overused in ever form of media
2, they have very rarely been done well so they make an easy target.
3, they're mainstream and most people think it's cool to rag on things that are main stream
4, because more often then not they're just normal people stuck into a man sized tank, and not like real marines who kick ass in ever possible sense of the word.

40k space marines are pretty sweet when you look into the lore and the grittier kinda designs and stuff. that being said they are all equally weak compared to the green tide

Ok maybe not EVERY form, but they're still overused to the point that I get a perverse sense of glee from seeing them get their throats torn out by various alien space bugs.

Being an Eldar player, I sort of agree with you. I like the Space Marine's armor and weapons (and their voices in the Dawn of War games are awesome) but maybe they should just be called by their nickname: The Angels of Death.
That'd be so much cooler.
