Aren't bullshit eh?

Mortal Kombat won Fighting GOTY.

How is that not bullshit in a year that saw the release of a Street Fighter game and TWO MvC games? Mortal Kombat is a pitiful excuse for a fighting game, even if it is miles ahead of anything else in the series.

They're not horrible, one thing Spike is at least good at is pandering to their demographic. Only real way to make a legitimate awards show is to do like the Oscar's and have a panel instead of people voting. The Witcher and Deus Ex were on the ballet but were beaten by Portal 2 and Skyrim respectively.
They did have a panel of gamer-related folks; a list of them can be found here. [http://www.spike.com/articles/zbeldj/video-game-awards-meet-the-vga-2011-advisory-council] The only categories voted by fans were Most Anticipated, Best Character, and Something Else I Can't Remember.

OT: I honestly thought things went pretty well this year. Yeah, it's still pretty immature, but having watched last year's show, I can tell they actually listened (a bit) and attempted to change a few things to appeal to the gamers that legitimately care about games. The Zelda tribute was a nice touch, and I loved the fact that Bastion received a decent amount of recognition.

Oh, and I like Zachary Levi. I had him follow me around in New Vegas as soon as I found him.

Not really, pretty much the entire show was a large amount of tedium and stupid jokes. The only parts I felt were worth watching were the trailers and when Hideo Kojima and Shigeru Miyamoto were on screen.

I don't really care for these kind of large award ceremonies, especially the VGA's. They usually seem more keen on making money off of the event than actually honoring games themselves. The awards usually don't matter that much anyway. I'm sure Battlefield 3 has won tons of awards, but to me it has to be one of the least fun games I have played in a long time.

Probably because MVC3 was a shit game that they released twice in one year, and street fight was a update patch while Mortal Kombat was actually good and a new game.

Okay, I'm not usually a graphics whore, but Uncharted 3 winning that category was complete bullshit. The game runs extremely choppy in comparison to even Uncharted 2.

And Killzone 3 didn't win anything. Figures.

REVENGEANCE IS NOT A WORD!!!

Ahem. I mean, the MGR:R gameplay looks very... bad. I mean, they establish in cutscenes that the sword can cut both through human flesh and GIANT SUPER SPECIAL AWESOME ROBOTS, but then you need to hit a guy twelve times for him to keel over? Great gameplay and story segregation there, Kojima.

Hitman trailer was badass, but contrary to everything the series stood for up to now. Wasn't "Silent Assassin" the best title you could get in prior games, which meant killing now one but your target? I don't know how the actual game will be like, but let's hope it won't encourage mass murder.

The Last of Us looks cool, the same way the Dead Island trailer looked cool. Haven't we had enough of zombies. It might be nice, I guess, who can tell?

Mass Effect 3 trailer was okay... except the part where Sheperd yells "Get to cover!" then proceeds to run out in the open into direct Reaper laser fire. Also Thresher Maws are badass.

I didn't watch the Diablo 3 cinematic. I want that to be a surprise.

Bioware takes on a strategy game? That's almost as far-fetched as if they were trying to do an MMO.

I think the street fighter that you are talking about is Super Street Fighter 4 which I would consider more of a large update to already existing game, so I'm not sure if you could count that. The same goes for Ultimate MvC3 since it's the same game, but with extra characters and features. As for MvC3, the gameplay was really good, but the online multiplayer was lackluster and the amount of modes that there were very bare-bones.

Now, what I think they made their choice off of was the amount of content in the game. You may not like the new Mortal Kombat, but you do have to admit that there is a lot more modes and unlocks than MvC3. If the decision was strictly on gameplay, I would probably give it to MvC too, but the category is supposed to be about the overall game.

Yes, there was a ton of content in the new MK. None of it was anywhere near the quality of MvC3. The GAMEPLAY is what should make or break a game. In MK's case, the gameplay is not very good. It's clunky, slow, and pretty shallow. MvC3 on the other hand is fast, easy to learn/hard to master, absurdly fluid, and hits that whacky fun note that the VS series is known for. This is a no-brainer decision even if you don't enjoy the style of MvC3. Mortal Kombat is just a demonstrably lower quality game.

At least Portal 2 won a shitload of awards.

Skyrim was always going to get GoTY, but was interesting how it didn't figure anywhere else (graphics, music, acting, etc). Tells you something, I think.

Shame DXHR didn't win anything, same as The Witcher 2, but all in all think the awards are actually pretty spot on.

I agree that gameplay should have the largest impact on deciding the better of two games, but I also think it should not be the only factor. While I disagree about MK's gameplay being low-quality, I do agree that MvC3's gameplay is more fun. However, based on principle I can't let the quality of the rest of the game go unnoticed.

One of my biggest complaints about some games is that the developers would spend all of their time focusing on one part of the game and hardly any effort to the others which causes the final product to be only half/part of a game. The most common of this seems to be either focusing mainly on the multiplayer and throwing in a token singleplayer campaign. That is what I feel happened with MvC3 except with the gameplay instead of multiplayer. For that reason I can't seem to bring myself to believe that MvC3 is the better fighting game despite having better fighting mechanics.

One could say that Ultimate MvC3 is better than MK since it adds many new modes and characters that are not in the original MvC3. If I were just to look at the games themselves and disregard the Ultimate MvC3's history, I would probably award it the better game. However, being expected to essentially buy the same game again just doesn't sit right with me, even if it is at a reduced price. I know that shouldn't be a factor in this type of contest, but it has ended up influencing my opinion unfortunately.

I'll call bullshit on a few things.

One, Skyrim should not be GotY. Maybe when it gets all of the issues it has fixed instead of making more issues with each patch then it can be GotY material, but definitely not as it is now. Having Skyrim win is essentially telling people that it doesn't matter if your game has bugs and glitches that can make it unplayable, just make it really big and look pretty most of the time and you're golden. Don't know about you, but that's definitely not the route I want games to take.

Two, Mark Hamill and Tara Strong should've gotten the best actor and actress awards. Yes Wheatly and GLaDOS are funny, but I don't think they give the same level of performance as those found by the Joker and Harley Quinn. This is coming from someone who doesn't like the Batman universe too, so that's saying something.

Three, why was Skyward Sword in the best motion game category? I'm happy it won of course, but it pretty much made it so the other games in the category had no shot whatsoever. Just because Link's sword is accurate means it competes with things like Dance Central? I find that very weird...

MW3 wins over BF3?
I don't know how anyone could be upset by this. Unless they already were in the CoD hater camp CoD had better single player options by a mile, and the multiplayer was just as solid as Battlefields and only comes down to personal preference to rambo-solo style or team focused large scale stuff.

I have a firm belief that Arkham City should've got game of the year. Seriously, that shit was amazing.

I was happy with the outcome. And Portal 2 beat MW3 for best Multiplayer, which I sure was going to go the other way around. I'm happy the way things went.

Could've been worse I suppose. Despite loving the crap out of Mark Hamill as the Joker, the Wheatly and GLadOS performance deserved that award.

I'm also glad that the trailer shown for ME3 was the biggest pile of boredom I have ever seen, thus making me not even want to finish the story.
Really? Because of a stinkin' trailer? *grumbles something about the gaming community these days*

Its sad it won GoTY becuase Skyrim is the first I have ever heared of a patch needing a patch just to fi everything the patch broke.
Clearly you aren't an avid TF2 player:
It was a nightmare...a horrible, horrible nightmare (well, except for the "no more micspam" part).

Back on-topic, the results don't really surprise me. It's all just a glorified popularity contest anyway. Still, it was nice to see that a varied selection of titles were nominated.
