Mortal Kombat got Fighting Game of the year, Awesome :).

Aren't bullshit eh?

Mortal Kombat won Fighting GOTY.

How is that not bullshit in a year that saw the release of a Street Fighter game and TWO MvC ? Mortal Kombat is a pitiful excuse for a fighting game, even if it is miles ahead of anything else in the series.
You've got to understand that fighting games are just that, Games.

Now I guess your a Fighting game enthusiast and I get that the "Fighting game circuit" sees MK as Inferior and enjoys being able to pull of super slick combos and what not, but to the Gamer who plays games to be entertained (I.E a whole lot of people) Mortal Kombat beats the others out right.

Also they obviously were biased because they tea-bagged anyone who went over the limit but they let the last two developers continue to talk with no problem while the others received at most 30 seconds to talk. I was severely disappointed and all I was really there for was the trailers.
Well, they DID win Game of the Year. After all, the Oscars give the Best Picture winner all the time they want for their acceptance speech, so why not?

The issue many of us raised with the nominations wasn't that they were stupid (you expect that from any award show), but that they have such a narrow view of the industry. Every game nominated is always triple-A and has already won a million awards every bloody gaming mag editor and their mum. What about the indies? Hell, what about the genuinely brilliant games non-independent devs churn out despite the best efforts of publishers? But no, let's give Halo 9 the award for "most original game" or whatever the f*ck.
It's a televised awards show - indies ALWAYS get screwed on those. (Heck, the Tonys exclude "indies" basically by definition.)

I just personally Don't think that Portal 2 should have won best DLC or the male voice Actor. Mark Hamill definefly should have gotten that and Old World Blues also should have won

Sorry, can't take this BS show seriously.

I found about it in 2009 and I've only watched snippets in 09' and 10' and the main thing I felt was EMBARRASSMENT. Why? Because it makes it look like the games industry is geared toward 13 year old ADD sufferers.

I find it interesting that Portal 2 won so many awards but was so low in the running for game of the year. I prefer it to Skyrim, but that's just me.

Bastion should have beaten Minecraft, it's such a unique and well-made game that it deserved it much more, Minecraft isn't bad but it's got so much wasted potential it's just ridiculous.

The Witcher 2 didn't win anything? Dang, that was a damn fine game.
The newer games are fresher in people's minds, that's why Skyrim won so many awards I think.

MK as the best fighter? Really?
It's the first fighting game to come out on consoles in years that's in any way worth playing. Capcom has completely ruined Street Fighter and Marvel vs. Capcom, and Ark System Works's horrendous BlazBlue series is a worthless joke. Mortal Kombat only really had competition in the form of The King of Fighters XIII, which is also pretty damn good, but not mainstream enough for this type of awards show.

It didn't deserve to be nominated for anything unless there was a "worst game of the year" category.

Real fighting game enthusiasts realize that Marvel vs. Capcom 3 is beyond worthless and Street Fighter IV is and always has been a joke. Both of those games are shameless cash grabs designed to cater to the Smash Bros. Brawl kids who like to pretend they're "competitive fighting game players". Mortal Kombat beat the holy hell out of both of them in the sales department while still being a much better competitive experience. Capcom has lost across the board and they have nobody to blame but themselves.

this thread is a joke, the VGA's were/are an abomination on gaming. Everything wrong about our passion was on display, the angry black guy from youtube was the only sane person in the room i feel. It's at heart an exercise in 'clever' marketing by various big name gaming corporations looking for an easy way to masturbate on stage about their latest multi-million dollar pile of s**t. Skyrim, while a solid 7/10 game, is no GOTY, that could go to any number of other, less well marketed, games. MW3 is a steaming turd of cancer upon gaming itself, and activision must have paid a tidy sum to get charlie sheen to say the name of that game.

Like one of the previous posters said, aside from the soo bad they are good jokes, the far too short speech from miyamoto, and game previews, theres no point in watching the VGA's, they are an embarrasment to gaming in my eyes.

Its sad it won GoTY becuase Skyrim is the first I have ever heared of a patch needing a patch just to fi everything the patch broke. Did the first patch even fix anything ?
There's got to be a "Yo Dawg" in there somewhere...

I think the first patch was the one that limited it to 2GB of RAM and added the Steam requirement...

So for the last few years the VGA's have been ridiculed for some absurd award decisions (Megan Fox for Best Female Performance? Really?) and nominations (like Nathan Fillion for Halo: Reach when he was there for all of five minutes).

However, this year it looks like the nominations and awards make sense. While there are obviously some that will be contested by the fans, the nominations and awards look solid, as well as one really good practice that I like.

Take, for instance, the Game of the Year: Skyrim. Obviously. However, look through the individual console GOTY's and you'll see Skyrim nowhere. That's because it has already won and giving it the awards for individual console would just be repetitive. I like that.
Nope, it's still bullshit.

So the GOTY went to Skyrim, but it's neither the best PS3, nor XBOX nor PC game. You may like that for variety's sake, but I reckon that's just bloody inconsistent and untruthful.

Multiplatform games CAN win platform awards, see Arkham City under "Best Xbox 360 game", so it should have been Skyrim there.
Even if Spike reckoned the 360 version sucked, that means Skyrim should have won atleast the PS3 or PC award, unless they think ALL Skyrim versions suck, which should mean the game is not a GOTY.

Taste can be difficult (although Dragon Age 2 as a nominee?!), but consistency isn't negotiable.

This...wow. Words fail me. Pros don't play MvC3, Street Fighter, or BlazBlue? I guess EVO never happened then.

That's funny, I don't recall ever saying 'pro'. Having fun putting words in my mouth?

Sponsored players will take part in whatever event is dictated by the people signing their checks. There are tournaments for Modern Warfare 2. That doesn't mean that it's a competitively viable game. Modern Warfare 2 aims the guns for you, and Street Fighter IV rewards the losing player. Both of these mechanics are the antithesis of competition and proof positive that the games in question were made with casual play in mind. People will still pretend otherwise, but just because someone shouts something from the rooftops doesn't mean it's true.

Also, Evolution Championship Series is a joke. It wasn't always a joke, but then again, neither was Capcom.

Nope, in fact I never have, I saw last years winners and nominations and that's about it. But it was enough to tell me sort of the show they were running.
Otherwise known as the 'I don't know what I'm argueing about but this is what I've heard' arguement, not very strong in the face of criticism that one.

Yes, the winners of last year were pretty much bullshit and the show was awful but upon watching this year's show I can say that they're still bad but (and here's the important part that a lot of people seem too wrapped up in 'gamer pride' to actually recognise) they're getting better.

The nominations they handed out this year were fair enough, there were a lot of good games on display and the ones that recieved awards (one of my main complaints about the VGA's this year was the lack of actual award giving) did seem like titles that had genuinely earned them (MW3 was a very good game, as was Skyrim and Batman: Arkham City).

The show they're running isn't inherantly bad, it's got a ways to go before it's what I'd call 'good' but they do seem to have at least made more of an effort this year (which counts for a lot in my opinion).
