Yeah I heard this on the radio yesterday. Only in America, I swear.
Not really. I'm pretty sure most civil court system are set up so that you initially have to go to court to see if you have a case.

What bothers me is, in the ruling, they were talking about how, while her parenting wasn't ideal, it wasn't worthy of a suit. Her parenting wasn't ideal because she didn't bend to her kids' every whim.

When did "good parenting" become "never saying no"?

Whoa..... almost smelled burnt toast there. She never would of won though. Stupid princess girls.
Don't treat little girls like they're a princess. Treat them likd an amazon.
Example: "Ok dear, we'll get you a pony, but you have to be the one who does the castration."

p.s. To all my Bronies, a warning; "Stay away from the glue factories!!!"

Well, I took the judge's remarks to just be generic "covering his ass so he keeps his job" comments.

Around the same time spankings become "child abuse".

I meant that only in America would you see something like children suing their own mother because they believe they need more stuff.

I don't know whether to laugh because it appears that the little princess didn't get her way-boo-hoo!- or cry because this shit can only fly here in America.

I'm glad she didn't get her way, I mean, heaven forbid if she actually *gasps* has to get a job to get something she wants.

well hang on now, I think there is a clear line between saying no and striking your child to enforce discipline.

OT: only in america.

I intentionally cut the topic name short to see who would read it. :p
I am just so proud of you I could cry. I love seeing people makes fools out of themselves because they are to lazy to actually read the article.

Although the judge threw the case out he made some rather disturbing remarks. I never knew that not spoiling your kids and giving them every little thing they want was called bad parenting. Plus if your in college grow up you dont need "care packages" from your mother.
Yeah, I always wanted to see someone post a thread title that has zero to do with an article to see who caught it.

When it says 'sending her son care packages', all i can think of is her throwing a flare into his room and him receiving a killstreak. What have i become...
This made me laugh and its sad that I was thinking the same thing I've become a monster!

OT: America, the land where you can sue anyone for anything and win. The legal system here sucks.

Edit: misquote stupid phone you have failed me.

Let's judge people without knowing the full story! I mean, the media always has accurate reports and never distorts the truth in order to create controversy, right?
This is a list of all the allegations given to the court:
http://volokh.com/2011/08/28/adult-children-sue-mother-for-allegedly-having-been-really-mean/

You can make up your own mind about it, but definitely seeing them all listed there it is not as clear cut as the scathing article makes out, and it does appear that the mother was being deliberately stubborn and difficult with her children, a few of the most interesting allegations:

After the divorce, Garrity tried to obtain custody of Kathryn, arguing that the plaintiffs ought to be separated since Steven had been abused by a female adult and therefore might abuse Kathryn. (According to the complaint, this was ironic, since Garrity was the one who abused Steven in the first place. The complaint does not specify what kind of abuse Garrity allegedly committed.)
In 1989, prior to the divorce, while Steven?s father was at work, Steven?s right arm was fractured. Garrity allegedly told different people different stories about what happened: she told the father that it occurred while Steven was at daycare (while refusing to place a claim with the daycare?s medical insurance provider), she told Steven?s paternal grandmother that it occurred while Steven was with a friend, and she later told Steven that it occurred while he was with a babysitter.
So it strikes me that the mother may be guilty of some sneaky emotional abuse against the children, (maybe even physical) I have relatives who can be maliciously controlling and fickle like that, and you just can't trust any gossipy story they tell you, and you can't tell them anything but they'll take it out of context and spread it around, but at the end of the day I would never want to sue them, then again they aren't my mother.

It said the mother was not available for comment.

Well, if I'd just found out I'd raised two of the most self-righteous entitled little spods on the planet, I think I'd need a time out as well. I might also need a most almighty kick up the arse for letting them get like that in the first place.

It's sad that children are such annoying brats now... they should be held in contempt or something for wasting the court's time.

Wait a minute.

changed her surname, thus ?causing attention? at her daughter?s school events

What kinda attention are we talking here? Cause a lot of this seems really minor stuff. Like, you could probbly summarize all of this under emotional distress, but event hen a lot of this stuff seems outside the juristication just by the amount of years tahts taken place between.

and this:

told her son, then 7, during a car ride that she would take him to the police station if he didn?t buckle his seat belt

Kid you got lucky. the first time I pulled that stunt my mother just got out of the car and called the police. So I had to get a lecture from the police about wearing my seatbeat, and then my allowance taken to pay the fine for wasting the valuable time and resources of the county.

EDIT:

Judge Judy (small claims court) eats kids like this for breakfast. She is truly the most entertaining thing on T.V. and I wish she had a shot at these demons.
Id like ti see Judge Pirro knock these two down a notch to be honest.
