I went to an advanced screening of Indy 4 on wednesday, and I thought it was a brilliant movie, it was just a great pop corn munching film.

My question is why do people, including my friends find the idea of the alien plot less believable than a guy that can rip out beat hearts by just twisting his hand on your chest or giant gold boxes that eject nazi killing ghosts....
Its a film, it's indiana jones, if he wants to hunt the ark he'll hunt the ark, If he wants to investigate the crystal skull so be it!
However I do say that the giant spaceship at the end was a step too far.

Further Spoiler Alert...

although I enjoyed a lot of it, it ended up with "The Abyss" ending of James Cameron fame where it seems even a successful director not having a clue how to end the movie uses the cop-out "aliens were living here" ending. The crystal skulls are human shaped BTW and there's plenty of real legends and temples in South America to not magnetize yourself to aliens. The spheres of Costa Rica could have been worked into any fictional account for example. Atlantis would have evoked more an Indy feel too.

Also, follow this one: You FIRST blow up the machine that's making a passable trail for your cars in the Amazon, THEN immediately after you have a car chase on perfectly level ground so that you can have a perfect sword fight between cars. I didn't know that the highway authority made a freeway in the Amazon in the 50's. Pleeease.

The fridge would have been fused into the kitchen and he would have died from suffication due to the air pressure concussion. Also the air would suck back but he went flying forward. Really dumb one that and adds nothing to the plot. Yes i know I have to suspend my disbelief, but the other movies were able to do that, this one wasn't for some reason.

Anyway, much of the other events were quite useless to the plot and it ended up being a movie with Indy in it, but not really an Indiana Jones movie, where forthought and investigation directs you along. I vaguely remember growing up that there was a Star Wars Chewbaca Christmas special too, but it doesn't mean that I want to remember it.

Indiana is just following along and we're just following him. If that's enough for you then this will be okay for you. For me it lost the adventure and discovery of #1 and the life and heart of #3. And in that I was disappointed. You will not see this movie twice.

Peace

I thought it was pretty good, I went wanting to see a new Indiana Jones movie and that's what I got, but I thought the alien plot device honestly just destroyed it. Maybe I'm just being too stubborn but I don't expect to have the phrase 'inter-dimensional beings' ever, EVER uttered in an Indy film.

There were a lot of other ways they could have done it, but they didn't. The last ten minutes, for me, were just the film shitting all over itself for no apparent reason. As we left a friend of mine quoted Yahtzee's 'kick in the balls' line from his Bioshock review and I have to agree, really. I definately enjoyed it, I've told other people that if they want to see it, they should see it... they just might leave the theater feeling somewhat cheated and disillusioned.

I don't see how a flying saucer is more ridiculous than the Ark pretty much killing everyone and taking them all to heaven or the cup of Christ that gives you immortality.

Actually, when you think about it, aliens are probably the least ridiculous storyline device of the Indiana Jones franchise.

As I said to my friend, who kept scoffing at the aliens (and I'm sorry if this bit offends anyone),

"Look... He's found the Ark of the Covenant, and the Holy Grail. I'd say the aliens are slightly MORE plausible than a "radio for talking to god," and a wooden cup that infuses immortality into a human body."

All in all, I thought the movie was great. The only thing that bothered me was that dumb bit with the swinging around on the vines. Seriously, he's the son of Indiana Jones, not bloody Tarzan.

It was a good movie. I'll make no excuses, I just want entertainment and this movie was all entertainment. Indiana Jones isn't believalbe for any number of reasons, I say just go with it. Aliens? Sure! Ghosts flying out of the Ark pwning Nazis? Cool! That 1000 year old knight guarding the grail? Also cool!

If I want realism I'll go into my kitchen and make a sandwich.

I think part of the outcry over aliens was not that it was more or less unrealistic/implausible than previous films, but that it was less creative than many of the previous implausibilities.

the heart scene and the covenant scene were both WTF moments, but WTF because they were not what you might have been expecting.

IMO, the alien scene was a letdown because it wasn't particularly creative, not because it was implausible.

I didn't mind how whacky, over-the-top and unbelievable the movie was, its Indiana Jones! Thats what made the first trilogy great. I'm just disappointed because Raiders and the Last Crusade were about mythology, this was about Roswell and how aliens-are-responsible-for-the-greatness-of-Mayans. I'd rather they'd explore mythology, like they used to *sniff*.

That said, Crystal Skull was still better than Temple of Doom XD

Because it is canon in Indiana Jones that magic exists and it is not canon that aliens exist.

I heard about the aliens already and it has put me off the film so I'll see it when it comes on DVD or iTunes or something.

i thought it was very good, followed the mythos of indy very well

everyone who complains are typically expecting their childhood back, much like the star wars prequels, they hype it up in their own mind and then are like "wow that's total crap"

there's also the issue of the over the top violence and feats aren't always done in movies anymore.

ummmm it's was never stated "there's no aliens" in the original indy trilogy so therefore it IS canon that aliens exist due to the fourth one saying they do :)

just because something isn't mentioned doesn't mean it's not part of the story or part of the official world, it just hasn't been mentioned
