I feared that this movie might not resonate with my nostalgia, so as a preventative measure, I watched the original trilogy again, just to make sure that I remembered the movies for what they really were. They were flimsier than I recalled, I'll grant you, but they were still awesome.
right there is the issue most ppl have with it, they haven't seen the movies in a long time or have childhood memories of it and look at it thru rose coloured glasses

cause most ppl grew up watching these films, along with star wars, they put them on a pedestal that anything else can't live up to and that's my main sticking point with them, it's much like anything you saw as a kid, if you watch it now, it's not the same

heck i still remember going to see the oringal raiders when i was a kid, with my yoda puppet, that i still have, and watching it on 35 mm on a big screen in toronto, sadly the theatre isn't there anymore or if it is, it's not a movie theatre

indy is and always will be a check your brain and enjoy the ride type of movies and they are supposed to be flimsy, that's the point of the pulp stuff

I'm also not sure why the aliens killed Cate Blanchett. Pretty lame gift.
it wasn't a gift that's the thing, she wasn't returning the skull because it was the right thing to do, she was returning to to gain power hence why they killed her

this one was a bit more up front with certain things than the other ones but i think that's due to the changes everyone's gone thru since making the originals

I also wish it informed me a bit more about crystal skulls. Raiders and Crusade piqued my interest in Christian mythology, but it was a little heartbreaking when all I can find on crystal skulls are "They were make in the 19th century and the Mayan connection is a hoax".

Now I has a sad.

Personally I thought this movie was shit.

The story seemed lazy compared to the others, the action scenes weren't up to par with the other ones (I don't care if he's old), the amount of bullshitty happenings were far to bullshitty (surviving a nuke in a fridge... please), the villains were too generic and comical, he now has an illegitimate bastard child (like Superman), the ending sucked massive cock, and it seemed more like a milking of the series than anything else. That and the main bad guy death was as dissatisfying as getting my dick sand-papered and then dunked in salt water.

Phantom Menace 2 anyone?

The problem, for me, was that the alien plot is, *ahem* well, alien, in an indy film.

The first 3 were based on the notion that religions mythology was true. The arc (jewish), the stones (i have no idea, but i guess some sort of indian tribe), and the grail (christian).
They were, in a sense, all "magical" plots.

Although the crystal skulls are painted as being deities, of some sort of Mayan civilization, the fact that they are explained as alien, crosses the line from (religious) fantasy, to sci-fi.

And I'm not saying that fantasy is better than sci-fi. It's just that this particular franchise is a fantasy one. Imagine that in "Lord of the Rings 4", Frodo boards a spaceship.

I guess had the movie not been an Indiana Jones film, but a stand alone summer adventure, I would've enjoyed it more. I wouldn't have had any problems with the aliens (although I would still be bitching about the refrigerator and the Tarzan scenes).
This is exactly my problem with the story. Especially since most aspects of it (the skulls, the Nazca lines, the notion that ancient humans were too stupid to build their own monuments) were based on half-baked Erich von Daniken bullshit.

I loved the quicksand scene, though.

SPOILERS

the things that did make me mad at the movie was

-tarzan scene....that had no logic to it at all. do monkeys hate russians trying to steal skulls?
I dunno, I sought of saw it as a beard thing - the kid's got the 5 oclock shadow thing going and the monkeys look the same.

Personally I hated the movie. I'll get it when the 4-box set comes out because it is in the four box set, that's about it.
