I adored KOTOR! The game that made me love Bioware.

KOTOR 2 was a.. Disappointment... But it wasn't a Bioware game, which might explain it.

You saying that you don't like KOTOR 1 is alright; people have different opinions, tastes and all that.
But saying that you think KOTOR 2 is better, it's just plain trollin'.

I stopped giving a damn about the second game when one of the companions asked me something about the past of my character; and I had 4~5 different options I could choose. It felt like playing a nobody.

In the first game you learn about the Revan's history and at the same time you make some of your own; and after the revelation you have two standing points from where you can see the weight of your past and future choices.

I can see how it could be a good game, but the combat's a huge issue. The D20 system just doesn't translate well into a video game. Especially when it tries to convince you it's not actually turn-based.

Dude, spoiler tags now. I read your post and some of the story is ruined for me, entire plot twists gone in a matter of words. Lucky for both of us, I forgot what you wrote in the process of writing this so I hold nothing against you.

OT: I reckon it's pretty fucking awesome so far. I'm only just past the training stage, which I found difficult; finding the ruins amongst all those animals was a little dull but it was necessary for plot development and it rewarded XP so it was okay. So far the story is awesome though.

I am noticing similarities with Mass Effect in the game. The meetings with the higher power, the being made into something better and exploring planets. I can put up with it, Mass Effect was awesome and as I said earlier, Knights of the Old Republic is even better.

i only got to the restoration zone before i quit kotor 2. i just like it better because the story seemed like it would be more interesting. i do agree though, it was kind of annoying that the dialog seemed to have in mind the people who never played the first game. i mean it seems like most people would understand that 2 would come after 1 and would thus, play the first game before this one. i got really confused when i had the choice of asking "who's revan and malak?" i kept wondering if my character hit her head or something and forget about everything that happening in the first game

why do people like these games?

kotor 1 was the most boring game i have ever played, in every way. combat was BORING, the story was BORING, the characters were BORING, and character development was just pathetic (not as bad as in final fantasy 12 but still pretty bad). combat for me went "flurry,flurry,flurry...done" i didnt even need force powers. the game just felt tedious, especially the star forge.

kotor 2 i actually thought was a good game. combat was more smooth, the story had an element of mystery that actually made me care about what the outcome would be. but it was so buggy it was unplayable. was this game even play tested before release? for games that get so much praise i was expecting so much better.

im sure ill get flamed for this because everyone seems to love these games but please tell me what im missing because other than the star wars license and pretty good voice acting, i cant find anything game of the year worthy...maybe 2003 was just a really slow year
Wait wait wait... you liked KotOR 2 and didnt like KotOR1?? What's wrong with you, game play is EXACTELLY the same... And KotOR 2 is bug ridden and the story dont even have a proper ending, just something half thinked they tacked at last minute cause they didnt have the time to finish the game properly

Keeping in mind that the game IS 7 years old, it is still one of the classic examples of how an RPG should be made. Uninteresting characters? There are few greater characters than HK-47, Carth Onasi is still a cult fave, and Bastilla's evolution as you slowly regain your powers and learn your true identity is perfect.

The combat is EXACTLY THE SAME in both games, minus a few powers. If you liked the second one's combat, then there should have been no complaints about the first.
The second one had the best Hand to hand fights I ever seen.

I hate the new breed of western RPGs but KoToR is actually brilliant.

It truly is an RPG masterpiece and it pains me to say it due to the fact I truly thought the hype was over-rated and so I wanted to hate it. However it is fantastic in almost every way.

It is a true paragon of Starwars style gaming along with Star wars: Jedi Knight Dark Forces 2, Empire at war and Rogue squadron imo.

If you liked Kotor 2's combat then you should feel the same about the first one. Tedious is not something I've heard anyone call Kotor and if you actually talked to the characters they do at least develop unlike some games. You also mean you didn't like that plot twist? The only way you couldn't of liked it is if someone spoiled it for you. As for it being to easy you should bump the difficulty back down to hard mode and play it then. I guarantee you'll use your force powers. Your post honestly makes it seem like you didn't actually play the game to the fullest extent and you wanted to make a thread that would get high amounts of views and posts.

I agree that KOTOR is the most overrated RPG ever. It's certainly nowhere near as good as Mass Effect.
You do realize if there was no Kotor there would be no Mass Effect right?

From what you just said it sounds a lot like Dragon Age: Origins: BORING. Also I haven't played it but I think it's probably overrated.
Give it a try. Who knows, you might actually like it.(How can something "probably" be overrated?)

I had the game for the xbox and I thought it was alright, just that, alright.

The combat was annoying but each planet had a nice little story to follow, the characters were pretty unique and you had plenty of time and chances to get to know them, it was star Wars so let that say what it will and there was alot to do. It certainly wasn't a perfect game, nor even what some people consider the best RPG ever made in my opinion, it was just a fairly good rpg which has gained a surprisingly large and devoted fanbase since release.

Jade empire on the other hand, where's the love for that little beaut eh? You kids are lining up for your Shepard and your Normandy while missing out on a Chinese mythological kung-fu steampunk adventure RPG which is easily Bioware's best game.

What I got from the OP-

"I have an opinion different from most of you! LOOK AT ME!!!!!!!"

Don't be offended, I think the exact same thing every time I see a thread like this where "I dislike popular game X" or "Game Y is horribly overrated"

Know what? I don't care. You just want attention, and by posting in your thread I've already given too much to you.

Congratulations, you have an opinion.
I'm sorry; I didn't realize we live in a world where we can't voice an opinion. From now on, only factual threads will be tolerated and expression of self is outlawed. Using facts to convince someone of your own point of view is also illegal. Have fun.

I loved the first KOTOR mainly because of the great capacity to be evil and I like the story of 2 so far. For a mod of Neverwinter Nights, I think the mechanics and gameplay are pretty good.

You're actually the only person I've ever met/seen/internetted who preferred the Kotor 2 story to 1.

Objectively, everyone's entitled to their opinion. Subjectively, you need help :)

Righteous Indignation: You didn't like KOTOR?

Statement: You're an idiot, meatbag.

Okay, obvious HK jokes aside, I can see where your coming from actually so don't take the above seriously. Personally I've never like Bioware's combat systems in any of their games but I've always preferred to be in direct control of the action rather than Queuing up actions and watching the action play out. However I've always been a sucker for good writing and stories, and KOTOR is almost unparalleled in that area (and only other bioware games seem to come close). I don't quite see how the characters were boring, but then everyone reacts to different writing types.

You only got to the Restoration Zone?

The mid-game was the best part of KOTOR 2. Peragus and Telos was the most annoying, brutally long and needlessly difficult introduction I've seen in an RPG, but the game makes up for that starting with the hidden academy on Telos. Dxun, Nar Shadda and Korriban were all great moments in the game. And the Restored Content mod is out for KOTOR 2, which drastically improves the story near the end of the game for the better.

Anyway, I liked both KOTOR games independently of each other; the first more for its story and sudden twist, the second more for the gameplay and actual RPG elements. I quite liked the second one more, though. The overall story, the characters, the setting and the events of the game were just a lot better, and the only real criticism that can be levied at the game, the ending, is now fixable by a content mod (and while I normally criticize the developer for not finishing the game, LucasArts was the culprit with KOTOR 2; and when Obsidian requested to release a post-release patch to restore most of the content they replaced or rushed, they were denied). And the original ending Obsidian had planned? Game would have gotten 9.5s across the board, easily.

I really enjoyed KOTOR 1. The general recipe of that game has been re-used by Bioware before (Jade Empire comes to mind).

KOTOR 2 was just as good in my opinion, except for the fact that I encountered a fair few bugs and that content was dropped by Obsidian due to the release date.

You have to understand that the game is old and that RPG's have progressed a bit. After playing ME1, ME2 & DA:O I still find it fun to play KOTOR.

Ok,your opinion is valid bout Kotor, but why are you comparing it to MASS EFFECT. Note that I loved Mass Effect, but Mass Effect is completely different in almost everyway possible aside from them both being RPGs!

OT: I personaly loved Kotor 1 but could find myself liking the 2nd very much realy, but opinions are opinions...
