Spore is good, DRM is bad, shut up already (edited for repentence)

I'm not sure how the DRM for Battlefront II was, but judging by the shitstorm over Spore I'm thinking this is the worst to date.

I actually bought Spore, I didn't pirate it, and I haven't had any problems. If I run out of installs that's when I will pirate it. I feel that since I bought the game that I should be free to have it forever no matter what EA says.

Did I mellow out too much? For a while there we had a pretty good discussion going but I just couldn't maintain that level of hate.

Just go look at a few more reviews of Spore. You'll get it back in no time!
People on here tend to be logical at least, so usually there isn't anything blatanly horrible in the other spore threads.

But I'm so cloooooooose to a badge, I don't want to bullshit my way to it though. I guess I'll address the "Criminally short" complaint.

The game is only short if you make it that way. I think that is the problem with hardcore gamers playing Spore and giving it poor reviews. They expect the game to last a long time no matter how hard they play. But that's the problem. If you just enjoy the experience the game lasts a long time.

The cell phase is only long enough that it doesn't become tedious.

The creature phase might actually be a little too long.

The Tribal phase is all in how you play it. I can rip through it as a friendly tribe in three minutes flat. But when I just explored my options all kinds of interesting gamepley popped up. I gave out gifts, I raided other tribes, I fought a lasting conflict against a tribe. I played the tribal phase for half an hour without getting bored.

The Civ phase really shines. I played through as a military and economic society. Economic is my favorite. I got to watch other cities fight while I set up trade routes and bribed my way out of conflicts.

The Space phase is... just massive. I've barely scratched the surface and I've already been in three interstellar wars, laid waste to a planet and turned a frozen rock into a paradise.

I think it would be better if they would have a patch on the internet that allows you to break the DRM for those people who don't like illegally downloading games.

I think for people using the disc that the only thing different is the code generator that comes with the cracked version. If you use the code that comes with the crack you might not have to deal with the three installs.

So you would be... legally doing something illegal?

I think it would be that he actually bought the game, but he is bypassing the DRM in protest?

Personally I'll just pirate it if my installs run out or the game self destructs.

You're still bypassing the DRM, which is illegal.

I find legality such an odd concept, just like ethics, and morals.

Well, the game ratings on a site like Amazon refer to its quality as a complete product. Since you can't buy the game without the DRM, how the DRM affects your user experience is directly relevant to your review.

For example, I liked playing Mass Effect. However, trying to use the product I bought also a horridly tortured installation process (unrelated to DRM, if you're wondering). Why shouldn't that factor into my evaluation of whether the product is actually worth your time and money?

-- Alex
Still, would you say that Mass Effect was a bad game, or that you didn't like the installation process?

In a review of a game such as this, the player's concerns about the annoying installation should definitely be noted, but it should be kept seperate from how they felt about the game itself. If someone is so put off by a technical hurdle in getting the game that they refuse to put up with it, they should still know about the quality of the game, so they can decide if it's worth pirating or not.

Saying that the entire game is bad based on hardships of getting it to play would dissuade people who could enjoy the rest of the game by getting it through another means.
On a website like Amazon, tons of users are reviewing every item. Individual reviews doesn't need to be comprehensive or objective. As long as most contributors are providing an accurate and honest report of their subjective opinion of a product, the system works.

Since Amazon is more about the quality of the product than the game itself it seems an appropriate place for DRM complaints.

In all honesty though, we kinda said all there is to say.

"Spore is pretty cool, DRM isn't, we shouldn't let DRM ruin Spore for us, but some of us hate DRM enough to not buy the game."

Going back to the house analogy, you left out the part where the architect gets blamed for his cousin's shenanigans.

Will Wright poured a lot of energy into this title, and because of EA, it's getting shit on.

Ah,yes. Well, that's a given- people start complaining about the architect's work and how it must be shoddy since nobody can get in to access it, and the retarded cousin goes off to wreak more havok

Yeah, that's pretty much what I was aiming at when I added the retarded cousin to the analogy. If everyone blames the architecht for the problems then the retarded cousin is just going to keep on doing retarded shit.

I guess we've exhausted the possibilities of this thread. I'll have to come up with something else to complain about.
