I then picture a big religion war...over SPORE - and how likely it could happen. I almost dread the release of spore...
Blasphemous! No, but seriously, unless it's for entertainment, just ignore the type of people who campaign that Spore is against this or that.

I don't care much for religious dribble. I care much more that Spore and LittleBigPlanet are huge hits and usher in a new era of sandbox games based on user-game interactivity and proceduraly generated content.

Ramen!

Spore will only really annoy the Young-Earth Creationists.

It could honestly just provide fuel for the ID people. The entire game, you, the personal deity of your species, is making small decisions towards a greater whole. There's no natural selection. Just you creating a new species in whatever image you deem. The genre is called "god games" for a reason. There's even potential that the ID people will EMBRACE it.

If this happens, I don't think Will will be getting knighted.

BENIGHTED IS A GREAT WORD!, I GOTTA USE THAT!
Fun fact: "[a href=http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=benighted]benighted[/a]" is a word that I never knew before, and it turns out, an awesome one.

the id ppl make me laugh, sadly tho they might pick up on the game and then use it as "proof" id is real

there's a great pbs nova episode on a trial with the id ppl in one state when they tried to get teacher to teach id in science class

I don't believe in darwinism, but that is unimportant because Spore is a work of fiction. Real Life =/= Computer game
hate to say it but darwinism and evolution have way more basis in fact and truth and is even backed up in the bible

Anyone that finds Spore offensive just because it's got an evolution thing going on needs to be punched in the sack. Or ovaries, whatever.

Spore won't cause controversy. The places where creationism is still popular are often the same places where your siblings fancy you and everyone is very fat. I won't mention the country's name but I doubt very much that Spore will get anymore controversy than the Sims. If the Sims got no controversy for playing God why should Spore get any more?
Hmmm, US hatin' is becoming common on the internet nowadays. You have to remember that not all of us are cheeseburger inhaling fat bastards who have no critical thinking skills and thus buy into bullshit like Creationism. I, for example, prefer Taco Bell. -_^ But I digress.

The main problem with these people is that there is no reason or logic to the Creationist argument. It is entirely faith based in that the Bible is to be taken literally and there's no way that you can question it because it is a sacred document handed down by God directly to the original writers. Which is, of course, a lie since it has already been shown that history cannot prove Jesus' existence from any written record produced at the time he lived. Even theologians cannot agree on when he lived. And that's not to mention that if you choose to believe just one of the sketchy claims the Creationists make then you also have to throw out mounds of evidence in support of Darwinism. Only religion could inspire such incompetence. You won't usually catch the Creationists bringing this up, however. Any evidence that discredits their argument is ignored or declared "counter to the Bible" and therefore, wrong (somehow).

You cannot prove or disprove the existence of God and therefore, you will never be able to prove or disprove the Creationists. It is a matter of faith. Faith is not science. What's more important is to believe in the idea and morals the Bible espouses than focus on how the Bible proves some random Creationist argument. My old pastor probably had the best explaination I've ever heard on the topic of Creationism (he was Catholic, BTW): "Science explains the 'how' of creation. The Bible explains the 'why'."

Will Spore create a controversy here? I think the potential definitely exists given that people around here love to protest things that they have no idea about. All it takes is for one teacher to present it in his Biology class and things are all downhill from there.

I'm gonna say one thing here: If you don't like it, don't play it. But don't ruin it for the rest of us.

A note of humour: Jack Thompson is most likely a creationist. I would be shocked if he wasn't. As such, it's likely he'll have something to say about it, which should be amusing.

As far as leverage held by creationist: there isn't any. It's like believing in Santa Clause. Are any anti-santa games surrounded by controversy? no.

You want controversy? Wait until next year when RE5 comes out. That'll get the NAACP's nickers in a twist. As for spore; I see how it could cause controversy but I highly doubt it will. It's not the first game where you get to play a "god" character that creates the world in his own likeness (or to his own likings, whatever).

We don't sacrifice goats to Zeus anymore because all the believers are long dead. The success of Christianity and other large-scale religions is based entirely in their marketing efforts. You have your official sales brochures, and a legion of salesmen who work on the best commission possible - a ticket to the big easy. Evolution and the scientific method work counter to some of those faith-based marketing messages. So those concepts will be attacked by religious people whenever they arise. I think Spore is a 'God-Game', but I also think its core philosophy is "Hey this is how life could have evolved here, or elsewhere!"

So, do I think someone will attack Spore's premise? Definitely. Do I think anyone will care? Nope.

Look! Zero Punctuation! (Aside from the parenthesis)

Anyway, back on topic. A quick look on Google showed me the pages and pages of angry nothing. I don't think religious groups are that bothered about this one really.

Some people will say that the message it spreads is wrong.

Others, however, will say that it's just a game - a work of fiction. I mean, come on. I'm making an army of people that look like Gary Sinise had a kid with the Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man. Heh heh. Marshmallows.
