I hate football. That's soccer to you yanks. I hate it with a passion. However my friend loves football. I suppose probably due to being incredibly unfit he does not play it all that often, instead he plays Fifa '11... a football video game.

I love video games. But I hate Fifa. It infuriates me to a level unmatched by any game. Modern Warfare's spawn system has nothing on the controlling of the entire game of Fifa. Yes I am, for the most part, terrible at the game but that has never spoiled my enjoyment of a game before. I loved Ocarina of Time even when I was like 8 even though I couldn't even beat the Deku tree level and I loved Banjo Tooie even though I barely understood what was going on.

I say most sports games are only popular due to the sport in question being popular and not due to the actual video game actually being any good. So I ask have you ever bought a sports game when you have little or no interest in the sport in question? How many people share my hatred? Anyone got any tips on how to not suck at Fifa?

Sorry to give only one example of a sports game I hate but believe me when I say I hate all of them... except Wii Sports.

I used to play a lot of NHL games on the Genesis, and still buy a lot of racing sims.

I don't know why you would buy or play a sports game which features a sport you didn't play or had interest in though. I take part and enjoy both hockey and motor sports so I have interest in those games. I don't much care for football, so I don't buy or play those games.

well yeah, if you like football it's kind of obvious you would like a football game.

I like sports games like such mentioned "Fifa 11" but it's only enjoyable playing with friends because it's a friendly game, you throw abuse at each other but it's all good fun, compared to playing online against pros.

I have never bought a sports game. The point of a game is to escape into a world where anything is possible. If I want to play football, I'll go and kick a ball around. If I want to kill dragons, I'll play Dragon Age.

I hate these games too, but calling them the 'bane of [your] existence' seems a little harsh. Unless you live in a household where everybody plays them but you and you are forced to watch, I don't think it's a fair comment. Ignore the games you hate and move on... unless you're Yahtzee... then be incredibly awesome in ripping on the game. But I sense you're not Yahtzee. Anyway... I did it with the Prince of Persia game for the 360 (before Forgotten Sands). Rather than talk about how much I hate it, it doesn't exist. Simple as. Ignore them and move on. There are plenty of other things out there to play.

Well I'm glad to know it is a fair comment then. I suppose it is over the top to say it but I'm just pissed of at the moment. Yes it'll pass but I thought I could at least make a forum topic out of it. Also...

I'm trying to play with them because otherwise I end up sitting alone in my room on the internet... as I am right now.

That'll teach me to be a smart-ass.

Carry on, then.

Do the WWE games count? My brother plays them all the time and I just don't see the appeal. They aren't the best fighting games out there, especially since the new MMA game blasts all of them out of the water. I'd much rather kick somebodies ass by pogoing on them using Yoshimitsu than choke slamming them as the Undertaker.

Fifa is just awful... and I love Football... And PES isn't better either... And don't even say soccer... When americans use football to discribe a game in which you use your hands... I think some nation needs to stop living in denial...

I feel the exact same way man. Its so hard to see how EA can still make money by re-releasing Madden every year with 1 or 2 updates like new rosters or a new graphical upgrade. But I guess, to qoute Yathzee:

I think most people have a genre they really really hate. A friend of mine absolutely hates western RPGs(Fallout 3 not included) for the fact that 90% of them are based in a land that has elves and dwarves. Basically because they bring nothing new to the table.

I am personally football mad, but I cant help you with FIFA because PES and Football Manager are my chosen sports game poison. If there is any sports game I would recommend to someone who hates sports games, its Football Manager. For me it is probably the most expansive single player RPG you are ever likely to see, because when you get down to it, all the basic elements of an RPG are there. Stats levelling up(players stats boost in areas they are training in), tactics(every team requires you to think and react differently when facing them, just like rpg battles), party recruitement(massive potential team members(over 200,000), each with their own personality and wants and needs), and loads more.
Every game is different, there are massive threads dedicated to the sole topic of stories born out of the game.

So yeah, try that.

Completely disagree, some pro wrestling games were fun as hell, such as the ones for N64. It seems to me from playing the MMA game demos most of the time is just hugging the other character while punching him, maybe realistic but don't care. I like how pro wrestling how ridiculous it all is with things like Irish whips.

Also, when it comes to things such as chairs or tables, pro wrestling games can be rather fun doing things like powerbombs through a table. Pro wrestling is completely silly and unrealistic, doesn't mean it can't be fun.

The best way to not suck at sports games is to not play them at all. It also comes with the added bonus of not playing sports games.
I've been using this strategy for many years and its never served me wrong. You also get to laugh at people buying the same game with superficial adjustments every single year.

If you must play it, then use 5 star teams and play defensive and counter attack.

Watch real football and copy. Seriously. It's a simulation sports game for a reason. The most basic of tactics can win you matches.
