So this is what, a Wing Commander light game funded by fans and created by absolute amateurs that will probably never see release, or be woefully over-promised and be a buggy, glitchy mess.
Must be Friday.
While I'm with you on my scepticism on the game, as i wrote above, saying it's created by "amateurs" is untrue and I'll explain why. The reason this game/project/mess became the most successful crowd-funding project ever was because it was a) Chris Roberts and b) a promise that it would be a spiritual successor to Freelancer, Chris Robert's previous hit (itself a successor to Wing Commander).
That was the promise us backers believed. Why Microsoft, who developed some of the best PC games ever made, abandoned that gaming heritage and the PC to pursue console development was so tragic. Freelancer was simply magnificent. To be promised the 2014 version of Freelancer, realised by Chris Roberts himself, without ANY oversight by a publisher was a dream come true. He wasn't an amateur, he's the BOSS. So many PC gamers, myself included, are yearning for a modern, single player space sandbox, but EA, Ubi, ActiBlizz, etc only make multiplayer lootbox crap (I realise I'm talking about 2012 prior to today's developments, but you know what I mean).
I don't know the turning point when it went wrong. It wasn't one thing...the delays, the over-promising, feature creeping, questionable company practises, changing ToS...that's what led us to today. Now it's hard to feel anything more than scepticism.
Egosoft thankfully are filling the niche because AAA are incapable of doing so...and CIG as you say probably won't release. Until there's a release date, I have no faith in CIG anymore. I'm only grateful I didn't invest hundreds or even thousands of dollars.
