Due to prior shows being on in syndication and us not having a local affiliate, Voyager was the first one I saw regularly. UPN was on in my area, nobody picked up TNG or DS9.
I like certain characters in voyager more than I like the show itself. It had some pretty good episode, and some really bad ones. However, I've never been a big TNG fan, either. I find the characters to be mostly stiff and uninteresting even in later series where people argue they got better. When you have character-focused episodes, that's bad.
I liked DS9 more (Than TNG), though I think Batsamaritan has many good points on the matter. The fact is, while DS9 had a lot of stuff that was similar to Bab 5 and was quite "been there, done that" to me (Especially since I only first saw it last year and had watched Bab 5 religiously), it still had characters I liked, people I gave a damn about when they were put in bad circumstances. People liked TNG's characters because they were wooden badasses, and that's all they were looking for. Badasses. That annoys me. I find Picard to be the single most unlikable featured Captain (Commander, whatever) in all of Star Trek. I even liked Archer more, and I didn't like Enterprise at all.
but while DS9 was a poor man's Bab 5, it was still better than TNG in my eyes.
I grew up on the original Star Trek and the movies, because my dad was a major Trekkie. I also grew up reading some really old comics, because my dad had kept a bunch of them around. Oddly, I think I like Kirk more as an adult than I did as a kid, but TOS was still my first Trek and it's kind of a watermark. But even when I didn't really like Kirk, I liked him more than Picard.
I digress. I like Voyager, but I understand why a lot of people didn't. It suffered from shoddy writing (and boy, when Janeway's onscreen, you know it), some characters that are almost universally hated, and a tendency to become too Borg-focused (They always worked best when they were a remote threat), but I liked a lot of it. but again, this was the first series I could watch new and weekly. I'm probably biased.
