This seems decidedly wrong. Darth Maul's mystique was, I assume, intentional, as he was a shadowy, silent warrior who represented a disciplined, obedient Sith apprentice. Also, if he had survived, even though you'd have thought that being cut in half, falling into a melting pit and breaking your neck on the way down would have done it, Sidious wouldn't have taken Dooku as his new apprentice, would he? After all, that wouldn't be the ONLY time that Palpatine settled for a cyborg as his apprentice (cough cough Darth Vader cough).

I liked one or two episodes of the new Clone Wars. Actually, just one. Rookies. Apart from that, well, it's crap. It rapes all established canon, introduces Ahsoka who may be the single most annoying character I've ever seen in a series (seriously, with her presence in the Jedi Order in mind, I felt suddenly far better when rewatching Revenge of the Sith when Anakin slaughters the Padawans. Just because she'll die too), and frankly ruins one of my favourite villains of all time, a Mr General Grievous. The concept of Darth Maul's pointless return makes me somewhat sad. :(

I have seen some of them, and one day I need to pick them all up.
I did love them for the way they portrayed Grievous; that's the only true General Grievous in my mind. He was utterly awful in Episode 3, cowardly and weak, he's better in the Clone Wars, being much stronger and deadly, but they've kept the cowardice. I think he should fight with honour, using just his sabers, like he did in his first ever appearance in the 2D stuff. It seems more like what a previous Kaleesh warlord would do, but instead they have him using dirty tactics in the Clone Wars that seems like they are only there to make kids think 'Grrr what a mean bad guy!'.
Yep, exactly. Hell, Grievous was scary in Clone Wars. An he basically kicked five jedis' ass at once.

Which is my major problem with the new Clone Wars... Ahsoka fought Grievous and basically held him off. Just... Why?

I can't wait to see how they bullshit a way for him to miraculously survive being cut in half and falling down a large vertical shaft who's bottom was at least several hundred feet down.
I really don't think being cut in half is that much of a big deal, as Grievous, as was mentioned above, was a head and some badly damaged organs, if even that.
Darth Maul wouldn't suffer from blood loss as Obi-Wan's saber would cauterize the wound, so he would only lose limbs and his genitals. Anakin survived being set on fire, and the previously-mentioned General was in a far worse state.

So therefore the only questionable factors are the fall into the reactor. He could've clinged onto the side, as Obi-Wan did. There may have been a vent shaft or something, as Luke finds in Episode V. Then all he would have to do is get out of the palace system and onto the streets, Mind Trick somebody into helping him find a hospital and cybernetics shop, then steal a ship.
I imagine the Dark Side energy from his hate for Obi-Wan was keeping him going then.
Yeah, I took a loot at a few posts before posting that so ok maybe he could survive being cut in half, but then there's still the fall down down the big vertical shaft. Said shaft didn't look like it had any vents in it nor anything else to cling to except the thing near the edge that Obi Won was clinging to. Whatever the case this still seems more than a little forced and contrived and slightly beyond my willing suspension of disbelief.

Meh, pass. Star Wars was great for me earlier in life but I'll save my money for other things. Not that I hate Star Wars now or anything, I just don't follow the new stuff.

If it turns out amazing I might look into it later on but yeah.

I think they've made him crap. He looks nothing like he did in the movie and everytime he opens his mouth its just hatehatehatehate.
Should have just left it the way it was before.

Star Wars: The Clone Wars, eh? It's decent in some aspects, I guess. But what good there is happens to be eclipsed by the higher-ups' retcon mallet ruining portions of my childhood in front of my eyes. Now that I've got that said and out of the way, let's get on to this Maul thing, shall we?

I thought the whole point of introducing Savage Opress was because they garnered appeal from Darth Maul, but couldn't bring him back due to his unfortunate tendency of having been terminally bisected for 11 years straight. So they decided to make a carbon copy, with some slight hue issues and a mixed-up backstory, and Bjorn Stronginthearm's your uncle: Instant Maul substitute for all the little kiddos (oh, and their fans) to play with.

So why did they bring back the original? (Rhetorical question; answer is 'money').

And did they ever do anything interesting with Savage's character? I kind of stopped paying attention around the point where he became a major focus.

Yep. In the upcoming four-part finale to Star Wars The Clone Wars Season 4, everyone's favourite dual-bladed lightsaber wielder returns.

Personally, I can't wait.
I love the new Clone Wars series, I have high expectations that it will be amazing, and will flesh him out much more.
However, I worry that he's already been overshadowed by his brother Savage Opress, who has already has been given a story, and, in my opinion, is even more badass than Maul. He killed two Jedi, with no experience in fighting lightsaber-wielders, with only an axe.

Your thoughts, Escapist?
I'm curious, as it seems that most comments related to Episode 1 being re-released in 3D mention Darth Maul and his fantastic dual as being the best thing about The Phantom Menace.

I don't get how its possible....... the guy was split in 2 when Anikin was 10 now he's what 19 20 in the clone wars? So that means that ten years after he was cut in two he comes back to life? Im sorry but I don't like that idea, dead characters should stay dead.

I remember years ago when the first animated season came out. I think those weren't bad, all things considered. This just seems like they're killing the one redeemable aspect of The Phantom Menice.

My thoughts? Well, I was largely against it UNTIL I saw the last scene in there. It looked like Maul was using prostetics from the waist down. So I can let go a lot of the clone/resurrection/other Dues Ex bullshit that star wars USUALLY pulls out to explain a character coming back(Looking at you, FOrce Unleashed). So with a believable meathod of him returning, I'm actually all for it. let's see how Obi Wan handles the SECOND encounter with him.

Also, assij being dropped by Dooku was one of the best things they could have done for her character development. They're fleshing her out considerably more now, and that's a good thing.
Really? I would have been far less bothered if they has simply bulled the old "it's a clone" trick rather than do what they did. Yes, it's stupid, and I'd still rather they simply left him dead, but as for "believable", taking a character that was bisected a dropped down a shaft nowhere near any sort of support in soon to be hostile territory simply isn't.

Yes, I would also prefer they stop pulling the deus ex excuses as well, but there's a reason they usually go that route in situations like this, because any practical justification for Maul's continued existence is impossible bs.

Overall, dead characters need to stay dead. But Maul was popular, and pandering to the fanbase takes precedence over quality I suppose, not that that's a surprise...

I've already explained this twice in this thread, but anyway.
It was never clear that he died. We just know that he got cut in half and fell down what we assume is a reactor shaft. We don't know if he hit the bottom or anything other than that he began the fall down it.

Being cut in half wouldn't kill him. This is Star Wars. Darth Vader was limbless and on fire, but he still survived. Lightsaber wounds are cauterized, meaning there would be no blood loss, so Maul would be fine on that front. He lost no real vital organs other than his genitals, so the only problem there is not being able to go to the toilet comfortably.

As an added note, the Dark Side was very probably fuelling his survival, like it did with Anakin, because of his hate and want for revenge against Obi-Wan.

Crazier stuff has happened in Star Wars, and crazier stuff will happen. To be honest this isn't much of a stretch in a universe where people disappear after dying, survive being dismembered and set on fire, and there are laser swords and noise exists in space.
