I'd advise you to start with Episode 1.
Thats the worst advice anyone has ever given anyone else. Start with episode 4, ignore 1, 2 and 3 they should never of happened

First of all, it's "should have". Second of all, watching the story in chronological order makes sense.

They aren't really good unless you were alive during the hype period when they came out.

If you take a step back and look, you see it's not so amazing. It's like me having an over inflated opinion of cartoons I watched as a child. Because they mean something to me.
Well I wasn't alive when any of the original trilogy came out and I love them. :) They just capture my imagination, it's as simple as that.
They are nice movies, but not the best thing ever. I like them, but to me they are just regular movies. Maybe I am more of a LOTR geek.

But we can all agree the new ones are shitpiece. ^^
Nah, I don't think they're "the best thing ever", but they are an important cornerstone of both the sci-fi genre and films in general. I love LOTR as well. ;-)

And yes, the new trilogy is a shit sandwich.

just watch the old ones first then the new ones, I mean you can barely fit into nerd culture with out the information that led to all the in jokes and references, they are mostly in star wars because no one wants to take the time to watch hundreds of hours of startrek movies and tv shows.

I said to watch the story in chronological order. Not the release dates.

It's a movie franchise heavily referenced in so many different other media items that it's worth watching just for the cultural significance of it. Other than that, it's just one of those film franchises that people like because they're good.

Well... technically, chronologically could be considered the order in which they were released. Besides, 4, 5 and 6 are just much better movies.

Obviously, there are advantages to watching the series both ways (1-6 or 4-6 then 1-3). However, the first three to be released were just much more interesting and engaging than watching Anakin whine his way into becoming an iconic villain.

Look. I never saw The Original Trilogy. (That's capitalized, right?)

Okay. That's a lie. I saw them all when I was 4-5 years old. But you can't really enjoy a movie at that age. It's all 'splosions and wazer wifles. I can't remember a single scene. But I've basically never seen them.

In fact, the movies' myriad descriptions fail to interest me enough to even bother watching them. Period. The plot twists have long become common domain, no longer even considered spoilers.

Why should I watch these movies I hold no interest in?

JUST BECAUSE? Really?
Noone's making you watch them :/

I saw them all for the first time a few days ago back to back and thought they were genuinely very enjoyable. Sure I knew all the plot twists and there were a select few scenes that were already ingrained in my mind from TV and youtube, but there were a lot of things I still knew nothing about and it was nice seeing all the pieces come together.

But still why the hell are you getting so worked up about watching them? If you feel like watching them then watch them, if you don't then don't, the only person that cares about this is you.

If you don't want to watch it, don't watch it.

I'm a star wars geek of the modern day, and don't fit the classical look at them, I just really like sci-fi, and feel star wars opened up the genre to a lot of different things. (well that and I play a star wars server on NWN)

That's the thing though... Science Fiction = epic if pulled off well, Science Fantasy = complete monstrous idea that needs to just DIE

A lot of elements from those movies (like the force, Darth Vader, the empire, lightsabers etc) are parodied all over the place, so it can help you get a lot of references.

Also, they're just classic movies that everyone should watch at least once, whether they like them or not. The original Star Wars trilogy, The Godfather, Taxi Driver, Shawshank Redemption, Silence of the Lambs, Citizen Kane etc are all just well known classics from their respective genres and great pieces of cinema.

If you don't like Star Wars, that's fine, (I didn't like The Godfather), but at least see the movies before passing judgement.

I've lost all interest in Star Wars and I feel George Lucas was potentially the worst thing that ever happened to it
This sentence is like saying George Foreman was the worst thing to happen to the George Foreman grill. You do know that George Lucas wrote Star Wars, right?

He changes and butchers his own work so much he should be taken away and shot. Plus episodes 1 2 and 3... just no.

I'm never watching Phantom Menace again. That movie never happened.

Neither did Hayden Christensen...

If you really want to understand things though, kidding aside, you should watch them in order of occurrance in the SW universe, that way you understand the whole redemption thing.

Watch the films just so you can criticise them from a position of authority. Plenty of films are overrated, and I don't respect the opinion of anyone that says the Star Wars films are the best films ever, but hey...what's the worst that could happen?

You should watch it actually, its one of those things you have to have seen, like the godfather and apocalypse now, the new trioligy isn't as good as the old one but still its one of those things you have to have seen.

Try and watch the original, unalterd versions of ep's 4, 5 and 6, they are far better than the special editions if not, the special editions are still just as good. Episode 1 is just eh, not that bad, but not incredibly awesome, watch if ya want to. Episode 2 is the worse one, ok you get to see the little green fuck nugget light sabre fight, but is one of the most force, unreal and cringe worthy love scenes worth it? Episode 3 is ok too, not as good as the original trilogy, but its a damn sight better than Episodes 1 & 2.

But I digres, It is worth giving them another veiw, you never know, you might like them, you might not, it all depends on what you look for in a film.
