No. It's a toy. Just like comic books are a medium for child entertainment. Then they started specializing for adults.

Look where they are now. I'd rather keep gaming a toy, thanks.
So I guess a ball is a toy too, right? Then people playing football or basketball are big kids that didn't grow out of it.

Another example - many kids in USA play baseball. Does this mean it's only for kids? No? But it fits your definition.

Also, while your definition states that toy is something to play with, not every game is JUST for playing (just for playing = mindless fun without any other messages). Oh, and definition says "for children or OTHERS". Others means people in general. So while some games = toys, not all toys = just kids.
Balls ARE toys. A toy is an item used to entertain oneself. Games are used for entertainment. Therefore, all games are toys.

Perhaps saying that all toys are just for children is incorrect, but my POINT, which you seem to have completely ignored, is that the gaming industry is going the exact same way as the comic book industry. Would you like to reply to that, instead of us arguing definitions of toy?

Can't say I agree - I don't believe first computer games were for kids. Text-only games are still games, you know. And which kid has enough patience/brains to type all day? Also, first GPUs have been designed with shooters in mind, so nothing for children.

You're still missing my point. The comic book industry is dead or dying; that is undeniable. IT started as a market for children. So did gaming. Then, as its primary clientele got older, it focused on the older clients rather than bringing in new blood. So is/did gaming. Then, the comic book's primary clientele started growing disinterested because they grew up, got jobs, families, and didn't have time for comics anymore.

My worry is that gaming will go the same route. It's following the exact same path. And that, frankly, scares me.

But if we perceive games as toys, and toys for children for that matter, we'll constantly be bringing in new blood, and the industry won't go the way of comics.

Understand?

Got ya, I thought you meant that "comics started for kids, then for adults = games started for kids, then for adults".

I don't agree at all. The average gaming age is 17-35, but we all know that people from 5 to even 77 play computer games. It's a market too wide to die out in the next 40-50 years.

Besides, there are many companies that keep making games for kids. Nintendo, sometimes Ubisoft (well, at least the old Ubisoft with Rayman and all) and casual games still make sure new players are interested in playing.

Oh, and while reading comics is considered... weird, you can always get a DS/PSP/play some casual games on your PC in work while boss is away. Or wife is asleep/tired to do better stuff.

I think gaming might be best compared to fishing. You buy equipment, then new bait, look for new locations, meet new people, share stories... and you might keep on fishing for the rest of your life. Even if people say you are too old.

anime killed the comic book. also, i can't imagine kids being turned off a game due to mature content and extra violence. since when did every parent in the world become responsible?

but i don't see what any of this has to do with starcraft.

Ok no video game should ever be in the Olympics. The Olympics are for world class athletes not some nerd sitting at his computer for 23 hours a day playing a game.

Anime wasn't popular around when comic books were hitting their final death knell.

It's less that they're being "turned off" by it. There are responsible parents in the world; quite a few, to be exact. The point is that the gaming industry is focusing on the hyperviolent gorefests, choking creativity, and saturating the market with grey-brown shooters. Eventually people are going to get bored.

No. No it should not.

With all due respect, what is it we are discussing here?
I don't see any questions or anything.
We're meant to be discussing Starcraft. Duh.

I'd prefer to discuss Starcraft than "best hairstyle in a computer game" random polls.

Seriously, Starcraft doesn't get enough credit in the western world imo.
One Acronym.. RTS.. RTS's do not get any big respect in the western world. I think has a lot to do with America's "Blow it up" attitude. If it were "watch them crumble" then we might enjoy RTS's, but right now we prefer FPS's and the like.

To be honest, Violetak, DiggitySC, and KlazartSC on youtube are way better commentators than gomtv.
Uh... Tasteless & SuperDanielMan are more knowledgeable by far than Rise/Cholera/Diggity/Klazart. Tasteless is a higher level player, involved in a higher level community, while SDM used to coach Estro, a pro Starcraft team. (And it shows in their commentaries.)

That said, if you're looking for play-by-play, Klazart is the man.

i don't mean to spam ads on this forum, but anyone bored and interested by starcraft (or general professional gaming) should definately check out http://www.gomtv.net/classics3/ (the latest averatec starcraft tournament).

i've been watching it so much over the last few weeks, find it far more entertaining than the rugby and cricket on television atm.

I used to be addicted to Starcraft Pro Gaming with Cholera's genius commentaries. He has this amazing ability to tell you about random stuff from his own life and still be so into the game that he gets you all psyched.
I wonder what is going to happen to that industry when the new game comes out. Will they switch to the sequal right away or will they play both games for a while?
Anyway, I say if shooting can be an olympic sport, so can pro gaming! X3
