After weeks of speculation, Syfy just announced that it won't renew Stargate Universe for a third season, putting an end (for now) to the long-running Stargate franchise on the network. The upcoming 10 episodes of Stargate Universe's second season, which will air in the Spring, will be the series' last. The news follows the recent cancellation of another franchise Syfy series, the Battlestar Galactica prequel Caprica. The Stargate franchise -- consisting of Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis and Stargate Universe -- has aired on Syfy since 2002. Syfy's slate of returning series includes Warehouse 13, Eureka and Haven, which will be joined next year by new series Being Human, which launches on January 17, the recently greenlit series Alphas as well the Battlestar Galactica prequel movie/backdoor pilot Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome.
Nooooo!!!!!! I for one am dismayed by this. One of the best written tv series for a long time. Damn tv exec's :(

Not surprised. Comapred to SG-1, it was a pile of shit. For one, it didn't have this person in it...

I really didn't like it. I was an avid fan of Atlantis but Universe just turned Stargate into yet another overly melodramatic space drama.

Well, this is balls. Stargate Universe had a ton of potential I'm rather disappointed by this. They'll probably do a DVD movie, I hope it's good.

Not surprised.

I always liked SG, because there was a sense of fun about it. A certain lightness.
Universe was just another badly lit mystery whine-fest.

I liked SG-1 and thought Atlantis was pretty good, but I just didn't really like Universe. Although I didn't watch more than an episode, so it might of got better.

I'd have to disagree with you on the 'best written show in awhile' part, I found Universe actually had largely terrible writing. I was getting somewhat annoyed by the constant Battlestar Galactica-esque concepts. I mean, I have no problem with them taking inspiration from it, but the whole 'creator at the start of the universe' thing just sounds like 'God' from Galactica. Rush's covering up of the control room on Destiny? Sounds like Adama's move in early Galactica where he told everyone he knew where Earth was. The constant flashbacks? Galactica's flashbacks (at least Galactica's had some reasoning behind it, a lot of Universe's was just useless back story that attempted to make characters deeper, but since they dropped those concepts so fast it largely didn't work). Not to mention that a lot of events are simply caused by people just being plain stupid. And the angst, oh god, just so much angst. There's a difference between actual drama and whiny characters. Rush, the glorious bastard that he was, seemed like one of the few generally logical characters, even though he was very Machiavellean at the same time.

But hooray for Battlestar Galactica: Blood and Chrome coming out, I've always wanted to see something set in the First Cylon War after that brief scene in Razor.

SGU was kinda slow paced, but I liked what it was doing. Just like I enjoyed Caprica. Adored Firefly. And the first three episodes (well, that was the entirety) of Sherlock. And watched the first season of V.

FFS. Fuck new series, I'm not gonna bother with them unless they run a full season, and even then I'm not going to expect more than that. Wait until they all screen, catch up later in my own time, none of this 'half a season a year' crap they pulled with SGU and Caprica. Seriously, what the fuck is up with these fucking execs?! Simpsons gets like infinite seasons, but new and imaginative or creative and well-written ones are lucky to make it to the end of one?!

Universe was actually getting better. Still, I can't say I'm all that disappointed to see it go.

Damn...this is sad indeed.
I quite liked it, though it wasn't my favorite, and i liked the more positive feel of the previous shows...
But still, it was cool.

As a fan of Stargate I can honestly say, tank f*ing god they cut them off.
This Universe thing turned into bloody desperate space wives, 90% pointless drama 10% Sci-Fi.
If they got nothing good to add to the franchise then end it there, leave the stage on a good note.

I honestly just dont care.

I liked the first season because of fanboyish impulses, but thats long been cut out.
I tried to like it but watching the second season, it simply failed to hold my interest.
Then I remembered I had better things to do and spent the next 10 hours doing homework.

My indifference about this is underwhelming. I was a fan of SG-1, but have been pretty neutral towards Atlantis and Universe. Still, it's a shame for the fans to lose it.

Awwww, the show was just growing into it's own skin. I despised the first couple episodes, but somehow I kept watching. A strange mash-up from Stargate, Battlestar Galactica and Voyager; pretentious, filled with unneccesary drama and obnoxious characters.

But at the end of the first season it started getting it's own face, developing some character of it's own. The story itself became more intruiging as well, keeping me watching. Shame I'll never get to see the conclusion now.

I have watched about 6 battlestar galactigate (see what I did there?!)episodes and I was remarkably underwhelmed. One of the cornerstones of SG-1 and Atlantis was their artistic style. they were a lot more light hearted and certainly had a greater sense of adventure, so to speak; this being in comparison to other stuff which was a bit too doom and gloom for my liking. Why they switched from the tried and tested formula? I can only guess that they tried to make Stargate more mainstream, which lost them a huge amount of their fan base and evidently did not attract enough new viewers.

Personally I enjoyed the middle (say 3-7) seasons of SG-1 the most, though they were all fun to watch, including Atlantis. I just wish Universe could have taken note of the recipe that made the previous shows so successful, and launched the brand.
