A mate of mine recommended Stargate to me, but I don't know where to start. In fact, I don't even know what Stargate is about. I realise that it's a militaristic sci-fi, and that the story revolves around wormholes located throughout the galaxy, but that's it.
I've heard about the Atlantis and Universe spin-offs, but I'm not sure how they tie in with the original series, or whether they're even connected in any way.

My question is: where should I start? And is Stargate worth watching?

You can skip the movie. Its neat, but the TV show outclasses it in every way.

EDIT: The story line revolves around one team that goes out exploring new worlds, all the while battling an evil space empire (The Goa'uld), who wishes to enslave the universe (And is half way there when the show starts).

The movie isn't THAT good. Really, it ended up making me sad at sometimes, because the characters are done poorly in the movie when compared to the show.

Admittedly though, if you watched the movie without ever watching the show, its awesome.

I agree, the movie is a must. It sets up SG-1 nicely.

Stargate (SG-1 and Atlantis) is one of my favourite TV programmes ever. Yes, it's well worth watching. You really do need to watch the film first though. If you just jump straight into the series then you'll miss a lot of what's going on. Yes, the series does ret-con some things in the film, but generally what happens in the film is entirely canon.

So, I'd watch the original film first. Then start watching SG-1. Atlantis doesn't come in chronologically until after season seven of SG-1, but you can basically start watching them alternately from season eight onwards. Then after you're finished with SG-1, there are the Ark of Truth and Continuum movies. Personally I wouldn't bother with Stargate Universe. I just don't think it's very good. That's just my personal opinion though.

You might want to watch the original stargate movie first. The one with Kevin Cosner. However his name is spelt.

It's DEFINATELY worth watching. Atlantis is pretty decent to watch aswell but not as good as SG1, Universe however has turned out to be an absolute gem, almost as good as SG1.

Start out by watching the movie, then watch SG-1 and Atlantis. Universe can be skipped, it's far more serious, moody and dark (both in terms of lighting and story lines) than the other shows and lacks their charm and humor.

Yes. Watch it, my family had freaking Family Nights - over 200 of them! - watching all of SG-1. You'll love it. Start with the 1994 movie if you want all the background, then watch SG-1. Then watch Atlantis if you're not bored of it.

I would definitely watch the original movie first, as it sets up the series, then watch SG1, starting with the pilot and working your way through the series in chronological order. it is defiantly a fantastic show worth every moment spent on it.

It is IMPERATIVE that you watch the Movie, then SG-1, then Atlantis (around the time it started, showtime chronologically. Atlantis and SG-1 tie in frequently, and you might not fully understand it unless you've reached that point in both.)
But yeah, WATCH STARGATE. It is one of the best Sci-fi series out there.

First it's spelled Costner. Second, Costner wasn't in Stargate, you're thinking of Kurt Russel.

WATCH STARGATE. It is one of the best Sci-fi series out there.

I would argue that it is the BEST sci-fi show ever. Star Trek is nice and all, but Star Gate covers more ground and has a more coherent overarching universe.

Kind of random, but in my History class (When I was in school) there was a day when almost all of the students did not show up to school, was about four others in my class. So instead of work the teacher set up the movie "Stargate" and we all watched it.
The next day he had the daily test based on the movie but did not say what the test was about...
