I hate to break up all the Xbox One bashing :) but I was wondering if I could impose upon the community for a couple of recommendations. PS. I'm new here.

I was just playing Metro Last Light and remembered how much I love stealth play. Unfortunately those delicious moments don't last long in Metro, before the linear/chaotic monster horror fights take over, which I don't really care for.

Lemme customize a gun, send me into an area crawling with baddies and light/dark areas, then let me roam around taking them down my way, and I can pretty much stay happy through next spring.

Splinter Cell Chaos Theory is my all-time favorite stealth game, FYI. Does anyone have another favorite they'd like to share? I'd be most interested in hearing. Thanks :)

Not exactly what you're looking for, but No One Lives Forever (2) does fit that description, other classics being Deus Ex and Thief.

Also Hitman if you're happy with 3rd person.

Have you played Deus Ex: Human Revolution? It doesn't have a full customization system for the guns, but you can upgrade them in interesting ways sometimes. Homing bullets for your rifle, exploding revolver shots, armor piercing pistol. And the stealth is smooth and fun. I'd give it a go if you like the genre, for sure.

Definitely Dishonored, but it's not that much of a shooter. Really good game, really fun stealth, but it's more of a 'stabbing in the back' game than a 'shoot a *****' game. (You still can shoot, you can shoot stealthily or loudly, but it's much more preferred to stab.)

TF2, maybe? I guarentee there's long replay value (plus it's FREEEEEEE), but the crowd you're stabbing is intelligent, adaptable, powerful people.

Also, the Source mod The Hidden (also FREEEEEE with a Source SDK game, which TF2 (FREEEEE) is). But you're mostly going to spend your time playing as a soldier than the stealth dude.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution. Haven't played much, didn't suit me. Game is often on sale on Steam for dirt cheap.

Theif. Haven't played it, will not give comments on it as such.

Metro 2033 (the first one), But stealth is horribly, horribly hard and unforgiving.

SOCOM, but I haven't played that much of it, and I don't think there are PC ports.

Most of Tom Clancy's games (same guy who does Splinter Cell). Some of them are more like squad military shooters than stealth though. Haven't played much, don't know what to suggest.

...

Of the list, Dishonored is a definite pick-up, but it might be the most graphically intensive of the bunch. Most gaming PCs can handle it, so, eh.

Well, I think Alpha Protocol is brilliant, and stealth shooting is my favourite way to play it.

make sure you let it update, though. It wasn't terribly stable at launch.

I'd like to second that!

Though it's not a shooter per se, more of a third person RPG stealthy shooty thingy.
That aside there's an (imo) interesting dialogue system and the way you deal with certain people actually makes a difference.
The AI is a bit dense at times and the game can be buggy (though personally I haven't encountered any game breaking bugs). There are some mandatory non-stealth fights/boss battles but it's possible to utilize the stealth skills even there.

I had tried Dishonored, and it showed some promise, but after the first time I died and realized it doesn't auto-save, I blacked out. When I came to, my monitor was smashed and my cat was afraid of me.

I would love to try SOCOM but it's console-exclusive and I refuse to purchase consoles, because, well, they're stupid. The only reason to buy them is to play the exclusive games the console makers hope will force you to buy them, and I'd frankly rather not give them the satisfaction.

I have played Deus Ex Human Revolution and Ghost Recon Future Soldier, and liked both of those, but their campaigns seemed short. I should see if there are DLCs. I tried Hitman Absolution briefly but had trouble getting into it -- I really liked the Sniper Challenge mini-game preview though.

I'm gonna check out Alpha Protocol, hopefully it's shooty enough :)

Ghost Recon: Future Soldier. Extremely indepth gun customization, and most of the game can be stealthed provided you don't screw up too badly.

Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay my suit your tastes though I think it might be more like Metro Last Night than the game you desribed that you would prefer. The games's a shooter that involves quite a bit of stealth and exploration. Escape from Butcher Bay is a better game than its sequel Assault from Dark Athena but if you buy it from GoG or Steam you get both.

It's worth checking out Hitman blood money if you gave Absolution a spin (assuming you like the concept) as they are very different. Blood money is not really a 'stealth-shooter'...more like a 'stealth mini-sandbox wanderer'

If you liked Human revolution then the original Deus ex might interest you. Expansive levels and emergent gameplay that gives you dozens of options to kill/subdue/distract/avoid enemies. It's has some heavy rpg elements and the first 2 levels are a bit lame so it might be difficult to get into.

Alpha protocol is good for it's dialogue system...don't play it for the 'shooty' stuff. We're talking about a combination of cross hairs that take 5 excruciating seconds to align and level design which makes you take everyone out.

Arkham Asylum is not a shooter but it does have a good stealth system and half decent AI.

Far Cry 3, if you play it stealthy
Deus Ex Human Revolution
Dishonored
Hitman Blood Money (best of the series imo)
Splinter Cell (not double agent or conviction though, they lose focus on stealth and focus more on action)

For stealth games in general check out The Batman Arkham games

Lol. You're a welcome distraction. Its been said before but I'd second Deus Ex: Human Revolution. Its exactly what you're describing and its a very stealth heavy game (if you choose to play that way)

I'm not 100% sure if this will count but it is one of my favored shooters. I am not a big PC gaming fan but I have bought this game twice due to it's awesome and I really wish a modern remake or even a similar game would come out...

SWAT 4

While there are a bunch of missions to do, the real draw of the game is two-fold:

A. You HAVE to use SWAT tactics (AKA you can't just put a bullet into every bad guy). Like the real SWAT team, their goal is to save lives, bad guys included. Unless you are fired upon, you are penalized for using lethal force.

B. Random Spawns. Something I am shocked that so few games do. In each level, the location of the bad guys/hostages are spawned randomly. So in a hospital level, you may once have a bad guy spawn in the lobby but the next time you go through, he will be hiding in the receptionist room waiting for you to walk by.

So stealth isn't the primary focus but as you can imagine, your mission is MUCH easier to accomplish if the bad guys don't know you're coming.

The Chronicles of Riddick games, Escape from Butcher bay and Assault on Dark Athena are the best stealth shooters in the Metro style i have ever played. they both have great atmosphere and there is a lot of emphasis on stealth as well as story/roleplaying. especially Butcher Bay is very good.

Have you tried Skyrim? /troll

Deus Ex: Human Revolution did it alright, though it took very long at times to stealthily finish a level.

Was about to say, "No Alpha Protocol? What is wrong with you guys?" but then I saw your post, faith in hummanity restored.

my personal recommendations go to far cry 3 and deus ex human rev. both have combat options if things go tits up, but the majority of both games can be done purely stealthily

Really depends on exactly what you are looking for though. If you're looking for games with stealth elements like Metro 2033 that are FPS games, then probably Deus Ex, Farcry 2/3, and S.T.A.L.K.E.R. are the only games that are close.
