I thought that Fable 3 did it pretty well...

But that's not fully steampunk, is it?

Well, a bad way to do it would be World of Warcraft.
I find that mixing magic and fantasy with steampunk and clockwork is actualy qouite cool, see rise of legends a great game.

So what just happened in that video?
I've seen a lot of your posts... and I have this to ask: can you ever make up your own mind? and do you ever work things out for yourself? just wondering, seriously (something worth considering, it will help you in life).

If I had to explain - a guy was getting beaten up gangster style by a heart in a metal suit, then thrown out a window. Lands on a balloon, rips some canvas off it in an attempt to save himself. Almost gets saved by some woman with the power of roses, when she suddenly gets attacked by the same thing that attacked the guy.

Watch the video again, that's pretty much the play-by-play.

Final Fantasy VI is the only steam punk game that immediately comes to mind, and it did it damn well.

There's several kinds of steampunk you can go for, more 'fantastical', more sci-fi oriented, more traditional, there's no right or wrong kind, but what they all have in common is one principle; Victorian-era tech and materials to create all kinds of amazing stuff that shouldn't be possible.

I myself prefer the 'original', or basic steampunk if you will; Victorian London, inventors everywhere creating wonderful machines (though not too far-out), that feeling of discovery and the triumph of science. Good stuff.

Game-wise I'd say the best example of steampunk would be Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura, though as you can see by the title it's mixed with magic (which makes it even more awesome in a way). It's an old-school WRPG, one with a big focus on roleplaying and narrative.

But the best steampunk thing period would be the anime film Steamboy:
And despite it being an anime film; WATCH IT IN ENGLISH. Not only do British (though they're apparently the wrong accents, but still) accents fit the setting a lot better, Patrick Stewart is one of the voice actors. So yeah, go watch it.

Two words - Bioshock Infinite:

Comes close, but it's a wee bit too advanced for steampunk I'd say, but it's debatable. I don't know too many details about the game's technology anyway, sadly. Regardless of what it is though, I want that fucking game noooooow!!!

BioShock ain't steampunk, it's dieselpunk in an Art Deco setting; WW2-era tech used for futuristic purposes, mixed with some biopunk (that one's obvious).

Well it was more indastrial revolision that steampunk.
Indastrial revolision? I think the use of this guy is in order:

Anyway, it depends on how far Fable 3 takes the Industrial Revolution-era tech. Tech from that era basically is the core of steampunk, but I sadly haven't played that game. Stupid Microsoft not releasing Fable 2 and 3 on the PC...

Ain't nothing wrong with a bit of variety, now is there?
I don't like every game being set in Manhattan, nor do I like all Steampunk to follow the same rules.

My favourite though? Lots & lots of clockwork. The steam-powered computer in Jasper Morello was cool too.
While steampunk is pretty flexible, fucktons of clockwork really falls under the clockpunk catagory; the Da Vinci-era with tons of little cogs creating all kinds of awesome stuff. Hell that man was the living example of clockpunk, if only he actually built most of his devices...*sigh* Well at least we can!

And yeah, I know, I'm a ***** when it comes to ranking these things. My apologies. But you know, the fashion's so different in each era. Fashion's important yo. Nothing says "steampunk" like a big ol' tophat.

Figures my first post would be about this topic. If you ask me, the 'right' way to pull off a Steampunk game is best found in Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura. You've got zepplins, older-style guns like revolvers and obviously steampunk-versions of modern weapons, such as a steampunk grenade launcher. You can also create what is an essence a steampunk sniper rifle by combining a marksman rifle with a looking glass. Heck, you can combine a miniature steam engine with some large gears to make a mechanized arachnid pet/temporary follower.

Lots and lots and lots and loooooooots of smoke. Or steam, I suppose. Also, rusty machines that look like they're held together by duct tape. And they need to be EVERYWHERE! Oh, and lots of copper. Don't know why, but it has to be rusty copper.

And I don't see an issue with steam powered motorcycle, no more than any other steam powered vehicle. It's gonna get pretty damn hot after a while, so you better have one hell of an insulated seat and codpiece, but otherwise it seems like it's work about as well as anything else in steampunk.

Rusted copper looks like this:

*shudder*

This is the colour of steampunk:

Shiny shiny braaaass...

And you're damn right about a steampowered motorcycle. Steamboy has a steampowered unicycle, and it's even more awesome.

Or an automatic rifle if you're feeling saucy. I could rip through anything with that thing. Well except this one ogre fellow I was forced to get past after I walked in a cave for some cave, therefor ruining my savegame. I was a sad panda that day.

Morrowind did steampunk well. It was by no means the genre of the game as a whole, but some dungeons hasd a steampunk feel and they looked amazing (though a bit dated by the standards of today's graphics). Lots of copper and brass pipes running along the walls, lava pits to heat up the water and clunking, ticking, whistling machines of unknown purpose that were still doing... whatever they do.. long after their owners had gone. Good stuff.
