Hugh Grant from Love Actually. Who doesn't want a Prime Minster giving speeches like that? Not that you all know what I'm on about.
Forgetting the fact that he is a womanising piece of shit...yeah i guess.
I should maybe rephrase that as 'Hugh Grant's character in Love Actually.' I don't want Hugh Grant as a Prime Minister; however the Prime Minister he plays in the film is awesome, and not at all womanising.

I dislike how people think Stephen Fry is perfect. He's far from perfect, and has made some questionable statements as well as actions in the past. He seems like a great bloke, but not the God-figure (pun intended) people make him out to be.

I'm gonna go fictional, and say Commander Vimes from Discworld. Or even just Terry Pratchett. A fantastic mind, and an atheist, to stop all of the other atheist wingers from moaning that a religious person can't be impartial.
This. Stephen Fry is a stupid mans idea of a clever man. He's a pile of clichés that writes nice scripts and has good researchers at the BBC. Yes he's a damn good comic and comedy author but he's not done anything really truly great in 10 years if not more.

I'll say Patrick Stewart for absolutely no good reason at all. At least when he lies it'll sound good and he'll look like he means it, every politician I've ever seen looks like a sleazy liar to begin with.

I'm inclined to go with Jeremy Clarkson too. He's an idiot, but he'll stick to his guns and with the exception of anti-environmentalism doesn't hold any true views I find objectionable (I assume most of the things he says are for comedic effect anyway...)

The world would be such a more wonderful place if any of these people got into a politics. The world might not be better for it, but I would totally watch a debate with Stephen Fry and Jeremy Clarkson, while the other mentioned people whine in a bunch of fringe parties about how they would never get any seats/electrol votes because they are not red or blue.

All right, maybe not President, but Prime Minister then. Though I could turn this thread into a medium in which to explain just how awesome Stephen Fry is, I'm not going to.

Instead I'm going to ask you, Escapists, this;

If you could choose any celebrity to be the Prime Minister, Dictator, President, Chancellor, King or Queen, of the country you live in, who would you choose? And why?

As you can probably gather I would choose Stephen Fry. Even though I am from Denmark, I would like to see him become the Prime Minister here.

Why? Well, even though I said earlier that I'd not turn this into a thread about him, as the OP it's my duty to start out.

  • 1: He's highly intelligent and well spoken.
2: He's an outspoken atheist, like myself, which could ensure that religion could finally be held out of politics (to a certain degree).
3: He has a great voice, and can captivate his listeners even through the most boring of circumstances.
4: Charisma is something he possesses in a great amount. Who would want to go to war against him?
5: He's gay. I would love to see a gay man as Prime Minister. I know it sounds weird, but I honestly belive it could change the perspectives on certain areas.
6: If Arnold could make decent governor, I have no doubt in my mind that Stephen Fry could be a succesful head of state, if he put his mind to it.

You don't have to make as many, or reasonable, points as I do. Hell, you don't even have to be serious about it! [sub]Which sounds silly when I write it like that.[/sub]

But anyway, your turn!
My answer is yours, although with a few changes.

The guy is so humble it's crazy, while he is smart he still considers himself ignorant.

He is very funny, which I think is important if your a leader.

He has alot of common sense, just look at that thing he did about language:

It's amazing, he can make a wonderfully articulate speach about hating people, who hate on people who aren't great with the English language.

Guy should have statues made in his honor, even though he would never want it.

Lewis Black for President with Henry Rollins as Vice President, I say.

...

for some reason when I saw the title, I instantly thought "Philip J. Fry [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WWGII3GWRG0] for president!"

Obama for King. I'm sure we could convince Lillibet, Chuck and the kids to step aside.

I mean, he's probably going to be out of a job in a couple years (much as it saddens me to say), and we could do with someone of his intelligence and forthrightness at the helm here. Shouldn't be too much work to make him enough of a naturalised British citizen for it to be legal. It worked for Prince Phillip and various others in the past after all.

Plus it'd be pretty cool; the christmas speech would be more interesting; and it's not like we're not half run by the states already anyway.

If not King, then at least a Labour leader who isn't a total dick. (We may have got that in Milliband, but we'll see).

;-)

(let the flames begin... :p)

Steven Colbert for president.
Fo' real real.

If American doesn't accept him as their leader, he should just make his own country.

Rob Swire.

1) He has a cool accent
2) He'd purge pop stars
3) He's Australian
4) He's the musical messiah.
5) He'd invent a BFG 9000, turn up on Glee, and kill them all.
he's actually british!!
and i second the motion of stephan fry being prime minaster
Nope, he was born in Perth and moved with Gareth McGrillen and El Hornet to move into the drum and bass scene.

Pendulum was much better as a strictly drum and bass group.
Well I can agree with you there, because:
1) This is coming from a massive Pendulum fanboy, I mean massive.
2) Immersion wasn't pop, they haven't moved into the fucking Kesha region yet, but wasn't underground, it was inbetween, less than In Silico but it wasn't as set as HYC was, but you couldn't call them a pop band in any sense, apart from the fact they have a bit of Alternative Rock in a couple of places.

George Carlin.

..Fuck, why does he have to be dead?

It's between Fry or Hitchens then.
This sentiment, but for Bill Hicks.

Heck, have both of them, just draw straws for which one is POTUS and which is VP.

Good christ do you know how long I've waited to hear someone else say that? A few less guitars and less of that dude straining his voice (don't get rid of them completely, but you know... tone it down 90%) and concentrate on the epic tunes and beats and they could be one of the world's best bands.

I'd agree with Stephen Fry as Prime Minister. Additionally I'll take Carol McGiffin as Deputy PM and give senior cabinet jobs to Hugh Laurie, Jeremy Clarkson, James May, Richard Hammond, David Tennant and Jeremy Kyle.

I'm a massive walking cliché and I don't care.

I'm going to say Henry Rollins [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_Rollins]. He's a smart, observant guy who knows how to speak to people in order to get a point across as well as leave them entertained. He's learnt things the hard way and goes off to visit countries and learn from the people themselves - which any leader should, to understand the people you're governing.
This.

For the US he is what all Americans should strive to be. Open minded, vocal and happy to see what happens outside of his environment to gain perspective.

A lot of us can take a que from guys like this.

I agree with Fry too, he is a wonderful man and he's made many mistakes like any other human being.
I don't know if you read his autobiography, but at the start he says how much he hates his body, I think he says something along the lines of "Ever since my youth I've felt nothing but hatred for this useless casing of flesh that inhabits my body. It can't run, it can't bat, it can't jump, it can't bowl or catch."
I empathised with him, but it made me feel sad. Someone so lovely has such bad confidence issues...

I also agree with who said Christopher Lee, and maybe add Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen?
Whoever said Jeremy Clarkson made me lol, Russell Howard mentioned it on his show, he'd make an awful prime minister.
"You're American? You can't be, you're not nearly fat enough!"
"Everyone in the cabinet is gay."
