**Holy lawn ornament, Batman! My first post ever was in response to a Labyrinth thread! I thought she was the newbie round these parts!
I'm "older" than people give me credit for. Hell, I'm coming up on my two-year mark this month. Scary thought huh? The reason people think I'm newer, say Nuke's generation, is that I lurked for months. Really lurked. I spent most of that time getting a genuine feel for the site and the users, who people respected and why, what I could do to earn respect and that kind of thing. I happen to think it was a few months well spent.
Instead of dividing the 'generations' of user, I think that there are particular demographics which exist[footnote]These are tongue in cheek, people. Seriously.[/footnote]. For example there are the
Roleplay Game enthusiasts[footnote]a subset of this is the forum game people. They tend to have much shorter attention spans and be relatively new to the forums.[/footnote]. These people have either been around for a while and retreated back into the land of their inception to toast the great threads of old[footnote]Queen of Hearts, the first Escapist Election... Oh, I miss thee so...[/footnote] or just dived right in and then discovered everything. They are creative if a little stand-offish at times. Spelling and grammar are a must.
Next come the
Denizens of Off-Topic. Oh boy. These are the argumentative, the political. They revel in the meta and the self-indulgent[footnote]Cockney comes firmly under this classification. Yes, it's also wild fun.[/footnote] and don't like to be interrupted. Like the Roleplay Game Enthusiasts they appreciate spelling and grammar, but it isn't quite so important.
The
User-Reviewers and
Newsies have a lot in common. Structured things with wry humour and good editing are their opiates. They like to be
in the know about anything and everything. If you've played it, they've probably read a dozen reviews about it, or written one themselves. Or they saw it in a few news articles and didn't find themselves interested.
Game Discussioners have their own little cliques. These are the people who like games. Really like games. Perhaps a little too much. They also hate games, talk about games, and nitpick like no-one else except maybe the Reviewers.
Those who stroll the Featured Content forums come in two apparent types: the
Commenteers and the
Fans/anti-Fans. The former writes on the articles with opinions and observations. His or her dream is to be quoted in the Letters To The Editor every week until they leave the site. The Fans/Anti-Fans just want to be FIRST!!
And now, there are the
Staff and
Red Guard[footnote]Because after all, what would this post be with out some satirical self-congratulation?[/footnote]. They are The Most Epic, The Most
AwesomeUltra to walk the forums. Tireless is their work both on the ground and in the high heavens of Themis offices, handing down the banquets of content for the Users below to feast upon. Pray, ye mortals pray. For they will smile kindly if it is made due.
