"Still Alive": Still a good track?

Remember when "Still Alive" was the catchiest tune in all the land?

Yeah. Now its legacy has been forever tarnished by the image of the unfunny gamer who spams it over and over again. It's sad, really. I still have this track on my MP3 player: to me its still as good as ever.

But then you play it for someone over the Internets: insert scorn, hate, and other wonderful bile here.

It's been three years since GLadOS first informed us of our triumph and her ability make notes. We know that playing it for the sake of being clever is a fail waiting to happen. But does that stop it from being a good song? Anyone left who just likes the song for being... y'know.... a good song?

I've never heard it outside the game itself and when I feel like playing it on my ipod so I guess I can't say if it's been ruined for me by other people but I still love it.

I've never experienced the spamming of the song so I still love it, and I've never played Portal either; my PC sucks now (9 years old) and I only have a PS3. I'll play when I can get the Orange Box real cheap because I'll probably only play Portal since I haven't played the first Half Life.

I've also never experienced people spamming that song, and had only heard it a few months ago when I played Portal for the first time. So yeah, it's still an awesome song to me.

It's okay, but I think the impact of that whole game has worn off dramatically. I've already made the decision to not buy Portal 2 day one, but I'm worried that the jokes will have all been killed by that point.

Oddly, i've never liked it in the first place. Catchy - yes, but not "super-duper cool and the best thing since sliced bread" many people think it is.

Yeah yeah, i know - this is blasphemy, this is madness.

EDIT: Oh look, someone else has the same opinion right above this post. Good to know.

The first Half Life experience can be replicated quite easily by playing Quake and imagining it in graphics that were decent for last-gen. You can definitely enjoy 2 without subjecting yourself to that :) but if all you want is Portal the PS3 version for that is not too bad, it's only Team Fortress 2 that really sucks without any updates. Plus with Valve's perplexing change of heart about the PS3 you never know, we might be getting updates for it so I'd get it while it's cheap.

I'd certainly not check any forums, especially this place, til after I've completed Portal 2 :)

I think he was talking about how people really should stop quoting Portal. I don't get the impression he cares how many people like it, just so long as they aren't always going on about it.

Way I see it, anyone who hates a song just because lots of other people like it and have played it a lot is an idiot. I can understand being tired of a song, but in that case it's a matter of still liking it, just usually choosing not to listen to it because you've been overexposed to it recently. But actually getting upset over it and disliking the song because lots of people like and it play it all the time? That's stupid.

It's an awesome song. It was, it is, and it always will be no matter how many people enjoy it.

It's a fun song. It always will be that; people abusing it doesn't change the song for me.

That's all.

Maybe it was just me. I remember when someone micspammed the song on a server, a server that welcomes the practice by the way, and I remember a few grumblings of disapproval. I started this because a couple of comments I noticed on GiantBomb suggested to me that the fun of the song has been ruined for some by overplaying and people who make references to the game like if it was 2007.

Wasn't the most replayable game either. I think i'll be picking up the sequel on Day One, because i'm a good little corporate whore. Also, previous trailers give me a sort of Pink Floyd "Welcome to the Machine" vibe.

As a sidenote, I think the multiplayer looks rather unnecessary. But for the two droids, I see a future in Portal comedy machinimas.

Still a good track? No. For it to be "still" a good track, it would have had to have been a good track at one point and stayed that way. And it's always been horrible (not because of it becoming a meme or whatever, the first time I heard it was the first time I beat Portal and I never watched the credits of the game without a mute button ready again). So no, it's impossible for it to still be a good track.

Also, thanks go out to posters #7 and #8 here; it'll be nice to have someone to chat with while running away from the angry mob. Or people to trip up so I have a better shot at getting away, one of the two. :p

I would, but Deus Ex Human Revolution, Dead Space 2 and Dragon Age 2 are out around the same time and I don't have enough money for more than that.

I thank you OP for bringing this up :D I quickly jumped over to youtube and started this beast of a song up :D

I seriously don't believe anyone that likes the song is going to agree that it's lost any 'spark', nor will the people that hate it applause it's greatness. It is a fun, querky and creative song no matter. :D

I think it's a great song. Sure, it's a little overexposed at this point, but most good songs are, in their time. Remember those few months back in '05 when all you heard, everywhere you went, was Coldplay's "Speed of Sound"?

I actually just had an urge to listen to it a few days ago, and then had fun putting the lyrics into one of those text to speech programs.
I've never seen the spamming of it either, save for the millions of music videos people have made on youtube for it, but, no one's shoving those into my ear holes, so, I'd have to say it has not been ruined for me.

I love that song. It's still awesome to me, even with all the overkill jokes about it. I find it to be timeless. I'll probably teach it to my children someday lol. I even sang it in a karaoke bar once, although nobody in the entire bar but my boyfriend knew what it was :( .
