If he gets charges pressed on him, I'm gonna be pissed. It was both that the guy was trespassing AND the kid was practicing legal self-defense.

Haven't heard of that one.
That kid's going to prison though.
why? it was self defense! I can legally shoot a guy on my priority if they show any threat towards me or my family. (basicly)

Give The Student with a sword some Cookies.. I think he deserves them, I know I would have done the same thing in his situation.

Jesus Christ? Hand, THEN fatal chest blow? You'd think cutting off a hand would sufficiently incapacitate an attacker.

He should have gone non-lethal then called an ambulance, but hey, what do we crazy Brits know?

And furthermore, for all the people saying it was just self-defense, ONE wound would be self defense, he had no reason to follow up with a second.

Honestly, if this kid had blown the guy's head off with a shotgun then he would have probably been fine (legally). A Katana is just as lethal at such close quarters and I cannot see how he could be punished for his actions. The main difference is that any burglar will run if you have a gun, but stupid ones might think that a Katana is merely a decorative piece.

It's all very well to say that the kid could have ran or simply wounded the burglar, but it's a totally different thing to try and do that in the heat of the moment, with the adrenaline pumping and with the guy who has previously broken into your home, causing you emotional and monetary grief.

Wow... proof that swords are by no means as outdated and ineffectual as some would like to think.

Also, BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.... XD

Hell. Yeah. Son.

This kid is my new hero. Too bad I don't qualify for med school, much less John Hopkins...

Man is a BADASS.

As for myself...if someone breaks into my home, they best be prepared for five inches of steel from 10 feet and 200lbs of anger and fear into a wall. I will throw my kunai with no compunction at all, and they hurt, even if I mis-spin them (I've embedded the blunt ends into trees on accident before). Of course, I won't aim for the head, I don't want another's lifeblood on my hands and I'm more likely to hit the torso, arm or lower leg.

EDIT: Kilobyte post! *fist pump*

i dunno bout down around baltimore way, but in texas, a non-folding blade in excess of nine inches is illegal to carry except a hunting/survival knife whilst hunting or such activity.

Plus, we had aman do this same thing except it was two burglars and he had a shotgun. He went to prison. I THINK he may have had his sentence overturned but if it did it took two appeals. Of course, this was a white guy that killed two hispanic teens robbing his neighbor, so other factors may exist.

Still, if the report is that the apparent burglar attacked first, then i say self defense good neighborly behavior

also, epic

On one hand, it was allegedly in self-defence.
On the other, the kid had a sharpened fucking Katana.

I wonder how this'll turn out.

Good for said student. Fuck that guy who got killed. If his dumb ass was not in that guys house in the first place then he would not have gotten kacked with a samurai sword.

As the the guy's legal defense, it all depends on how good the lawyer is. If he has a decent to great lawyer I say he gets off on self defense charges scot free. I also say no one tries to rob this guy's house again EVAR. Awesome!!

Which are most likely not in anyway illegal.

I have to question the burglar's intelligence. You're discovered by a guy carrying a samurai sword, and you try to attack him? wth?
No joke. What was his strategy? I know if I ever get confronted by a person with a sharp sword that looks determined to use it and I have nothing I am leaving with haste.

Crazy selfdefense ftw.
I wish I had a katana...
I'm schooled in the ways of kendo, but all I have is wooden and bamboo practice swords.

I do have a 1880's British Heavy Cavalry sabre made in India, which I picked up at auction.
Nice curve to it, but single handed :(

Apparently the first wound wasn't enough. If the criminal had ran or collapsed, then the second strike would have not been able to land. Since he did neither of those things, we can only assume that he was still a threat to the student's safety.

I hope the kid gets in no trouble, this guy's been put away for robbery a bunch of times? If there's a stranger in the house I'd stab him too. Do I want to kill someone? No do I want to keep my house safe? Yes

Well, I do not know the law in Maryland, but if it is similar to the law in Colorado (often referred to as the "make my day law") then he has the legal right to kill an intruder if he has given warning to said intruder, and believes the intruder to be a threat to life or property.

Now, him killing the guy with a sword, possibly taking at least two slashes (maybe one? Who knows maybe he had katana training) may be seen as gratuitous, and he may get in trouble for that, really depends on how well the opposing lawyer is.

I think he did the right think though, if I have a weapon, someone is in my house I do not know, my house had just gotten robbed, I warned the guy to leave or else, and he charges me, I would definitely defend my life even if that means killing him.

So, a kid investigates suspicious stuff, gets attacked by a man after a verbal warning, then kills man in self defense. I'm not seeing how the student would be in any sort of trouble here.

Axe Crazy Awesome. Odd, he could have done a kickass "warning shot". Although I suppose a severed hand is warning enough.
