Two words: BAD ASS. Seriously, it takes real guts to take on an intruder like that. And with a freakin' katana even!

I will stick to the European point of view - cutting off an arm seems to be more then enough to me and there is nothing awesome to it, just try to imagine the mess...

Seriously, I think that's just stupid. He should have just stopped after he cut off the guy's hand. He didn't need to kill him.

i dont think he intended to kill him, he was just frightened the guy would keep coming. no one would be completely calm during an episode like that, so give the guy a break.

As much as he's probably going to prison, it was self defence. The guy he killed was arrested for burglary before, and he told the guy to leave. Also he could've had a gun too.

But a katana... I don't know wether to feel sorry for the victim or the cut up robber...

You don't really think that in the heat of the moment the guy with the katana thought to himself, 'Hey, a guy is attacking me... There, I've cut off his arm. That should be enough. Wouldn't want to use too much force. Good thing I thought about all this while I was doing it so I didn't end up lacerating his abdomen!... Oops.'

...Do you?

You're assuming the hand was removed first. Plus, I don't think the guy would have been able to determine what degree of force would incapacitate without killing the intruder in the few seconds after the guy attacked him.

And I can think of a dozen ways to deliver chest lacerations and remove a hand in a single panic-driven stroke.

It was self defense, and the kid is probably tearing himself up about it even so. Get him evaluated by a psychologist, do some cursory investigation to insure no prior connection between the student and the intruder, as well as looking for a history of violence in the student's past.

I seriously doubt anyone involved thinks the situation is at all "awesome".

I hope he doesn't go to jail.

And personally I think the rules about sharpness are dumb. I am a pretty strong guy and could probably take someone's head off with a dull broadsword. If it was sharp, it would just mean the person I hit has a smaller chance of suffering. Nothing like having a sword get stuck halfway through. :p

the very VERY worst he'll get is manslaughter. Might not even get jail time, just parole. Had he hit/slashed/whatevered the criminal even one more time, then maybe he would get in trouble. But two injuries isn't enough to get him in anymore trouble. plus, the guy probably had no idea how much damage he had done to the criminal. Plus, there's the self defence thing. He'll be fine.

The intruder deserved it. The man told him to leave, he didn't, and he instead chose to attack the man. All the man was doing was defending himself from an attacker. The fact that he used a sword just made him cooler.
That is an awesome way to put it. I am amazed at how perfect that sounds. lol

Who doesn't follow the commands of a guy wielding a Katana when your unarmed?

Seriously. That guy was stupid.

Considering the guy was charged with burglary before and was in a strangers home I think it's fair to say he was there to steal.

Therefore I think it was justified as self defence as the sword guy didn't know what the intruder was capable of.

That kid's going to prison though.

Unfortunately the kids done for but I'll hand it to him.
Not necessarily, unless the sword was illegal. If the guy had lot's of wounds then it could be considered murder. Two wounds is not excessive so he could get away with self defence.
That depends greatly on state law. In Colorado, for example, we have a law called the "make my day" law which, in short, makes it perfectly legal to kill anyone who enters your property without permission. On top of that, weapons, such as a sword, that would more likely be used as decoration don't necessarily have to be registered.

Edit: Fixed my quote.

I guess it was self defense... But you know, keeping samurai swords in your house is never a good idea.

And next time, lock the fucking garage!
Next time don't step into someone else's garage looking to steal. If it were up to me the body would take a swim to feed Maryland crabs in a saltwater swamp (I love John Clancy and even keep a couple of cinder blocks in the garage just in case). I understand that these are hard times and people get desperate but that only means that the environment you're in only gets more dangerous.

And heck when a thief sues you for hurting himself in your house that only illustrates the depravity today's twisted legal system. I am tired of people sympathizing with the guilty. Humans tend to think of themselves in positive terms unless depressed (which might be more frequent now). But someone who steals repeatedly might think of themselves as a predator. If someone has invaded my country or house I am not going to try and hug them out of the chance that they might not be a malicious slavering predator but a meek down-on-luck poor soul. Such a problem must be confronted both proactively through social-service groups and with reactive rational self-defense (all too often self defense is based upon instincts and past experiences and can hardly be rational unless trained to be so).
