He should get off of any and all charges just because of pure awesomeness...

A good display of self-defence. I really hope that he doesn't get charges pressed against him.

Well here in Texas if someone comes or breaks into your house without your permission you are aquited of any charges.

God I love this state.
Man, the more I hear about Texas the more I want to move there. Can you believe what the state of New York defines as a so-called "Assault Weapon" (not to mention the shenanigans you have to go through with handguns).

If I could stand all that year-round heat and the possibility of going a full year without NY-style pizza, I would move there in a heartbeat.
When I lived in texas it made the news when a guy killed a man with a shot gun... through his front door. The "intruder" was banging on the front door (had not entered the building), he was told to go away, when he didn't he was shot without the owner even bothering to open the door. Killed him and ruined the door.

There was an investigation but no charges were made.
That was.........quite extreme, but one incident like that isn't going to make feel any safer living in a state where I could easily be prosecuted for murder for defending myself, my family, or my possessions against an intruder, even in the most justifiable circumstances.

While the man you have mentioned probably should have had some sort of charges brought against him (he broke just about every rule of engagement in that kind of situation), I doubt that the situation was as simple as *knock*knock*knock*, "Go away!", "No!", *Bang*.

Still, even if it was, I would rather live in a state on that side of the self-defence debate then one on the other side.

I had always wanted someone to break in to my house so my ex could do that to them. We used to sleep with a katana beside our bed. I do have three knives by my bed just in case something like that happens.

1. It's legal to possess a sword in the state of Maryland.

2. Maryland has the Castle Doctrine System in it's laws, by default, the robber waived his rights and his life by entering the private property.

3. The kid is lucky to be alive, that robber could very possibly have had a gun on hand, and we really don't need to debate which wins out in most conflicts. The robber had a history of armed robbery and armed assault, on officers, no less. Think he'd have "let up" on this kid?

Normally, in a murder investigation, if they have the solid evidence, a confession, and they still haven't charged you, chances are they aren't going to charge you, or plan to formally charge then dismiss the charges in judgment. The kid is most likely going to be fine unless something really screwed up happens. From the sound of things, and from the description of the kid's own testimony, he's got enough to deal with in his own mind having taken a life.

It's pretty cool, but one must wonder what was going through the kid's mind. The sword isn't exactly the most practical of weapons.

The katana-guy is fucked up.
I hope he gets at least manslaughter.
Lack of commensurability much?
If the article is right, the guy attacked him. I don't know why you'd attack a guy with a sword when you don't have any suitable weapon of your own, that's just stupid.

I don't know what the laws are out there but at least in Colorado we have the "Make My Day" law where if someone is in your home(I guess garage would count) you have the right to use deadly force if necessary. It's actually a little joke out here to say that if you do have to kill someone like that to make sure they fall inside your door so the law applies lol.

I was reading my hometown paper online when I came across this article [http://pantagraph.com/news/article_ac7c8fcc-a20c-11de-8cb4-001cc4c002e0.html] which talks about a college student who killed an intruder with a samurai sword. To sum up the article, on Monday there had been a burglary at the house where a couple of laptops and a PlayStation were stolen. On Tuesday morning one of the students who lived in the house noticed the garage door was open and took his sword to investigate. The student saw a guy in there and when the student told him to leave the guy attacked him. The student then cut off the guy's hand with the sword and gave him a huge cut to the chest which led to the intruders death.

What do you guys think? Crazy? Awesome? Crazy awesome?

(Also, I searched and couldn't find anything but if someone beat me to the punch on this just let me know)

Edit: To add a few more details, this happened in Baltimore, Maryland and it doesn't look like any charges have been pressed against the kid but I'll keep looking for updates on it if anything changes.
If he killed the intruder inside his house then it counts as self-defense... He's safe...

I'm solidly behind the kid. I would've used a firearm, and it's too bad the criminal died. I'm more worried that the scumball's family might be able to bring some sort of civil suit against our hero, as can happen in other states.

That is awesome. How many people can effectively use a sword like that. I would love to kill someone with a Katana or a wakizashi.

thats fuckin awesome

well, the kid shouldnt get in trouble - it was self defense if the guy attacked him and wasnt supposed to be there to begin with. its the same as having the right to shoot someone on your property
