Hi!

I had an interesting discussion about music with a coworker of mine. I am very much a fan of rather abrasive forms of expression. The music genre I find myself listening most to is progressive extreme metal. I love the music, and I can intellectually defend why I love it, but I totally understand why most people (almost anyone) wouldn't like it. The coworker asked if I could recommend an album from that particular style that I think best represents the best that the genre has to offer.

I couldn't. He probably would have heard nothing but noise where I hear interweaving harmonies and complex rhythmic patterns.

So, my question is; what do you love that is too esoteric, strange or 'extreme' to recommend to most people? Be it music, video games, books, movies, paintings, a sport or whatever else. What fascinates you about it, and what makes you think most others wouldn't like it?

The Dynasty Warriors video game series.

To be honest I barely understand why I love them, let alone recommending them to other people.

The games are basically just repetitive hacking and slashing while plowing through hordes of enemies without a care in the world. Not to mention the characters are over-the-top, cheesy and cliche' and adding to that you get a face full of hammy voice acting turned up to 11.

So yeah, I wouldn't recommend them unless someone specifically asked for something like that.

My housemate is constantly recommending the extreme metal band "Fuckpig", does that count? I'm also a bit sadistic in seeing other people in pain or displeasure...everyone has a bit of schaudenfreude, but I don't think it's acceptable to admit it most of the time.

Well I do love My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic but I wouldn't recommend it simply because I don't need the grief.

Also, porn.

The Grant Morrison run on Doom Patrol, I think it is as good as superhero comic books can get, but it is a bit confronting for people who aren't prepared to embrace it.

But hell I'm always recommending Suicide to people (the band) and that has rarely been appreciated.

Gundam model making. By all means if anyone need help on making one I am supportive. I know not everyone will like it due to the cost of buying one and the time to build and paint it were the overall result will vary from person ro person.

A Hermit's Cave
Soylent Green... ¬_¬

Anyway, serious answer: Fighting Steel

It's a fun little game, but I wouldn't really recommend it because it looks so shit! And it only has broad appeal to WWII naval enthusiasts.

Things I would not recommend for sane and healthy living:
1)Studying Literature
2) Writing Poetry
3)One night stands
4) Drinking
5) Smoking
6) Seducing religious girls
7) Living in dangerous cities
8) Wearing fedoras
9) Royal Bangs (band)
10) Black Lagoon (anime)

I'm currently doing (or have done) all of these things. It comes naturally to me and I enjoy it to an extent but it's mostly painful in the long run.

2, 9, and 10 I would grudgingly recommend. Avoid 1, 3 and 6 if you want to live without regrets.

Soy sauce and cream cheese toasties. Actually, adding soy sauce on every lunch/dinner.I just love it so much and what it adds to any other flavours. On the topic of food, also a hot chili sauce, peanut butter and cheese toastie.

Agreed man, I loved that series...but some of the games...ugh, I don't want to talk about it.

The WWE games, most parts of it is fun, some parts suck (At least in the newest game).

So if you want to pretend your a wrestler or one of you favorite wresters from the WWE and kick ass by yourself or a friend, that may be your answer.

Indeed. They are a blast, but I can't figure out why I spend so much time on them when there are far better uses for it.

OT: Dragon Age II . I had a blast playing it, and I'm really looking forward to the sequel, but there are just so many problems: repetitive levels, poorly balanced characters (you have to take Anders), an a great personal story that falls apart at the end; I might even play it again, but I can't find it in me to recommend it.

Well, it varies from person to person.

Probably MLP: FiM. I love the show, but I know that it's not for everyone.

First of all, I agree that Doom Patrol is excellent. I reread it recently, and it was even better than I remembered. Secondly, yeah, people usually have a habit of not appreciating when you recommend them suicide. Haha.

Me? Partly some stuff that I love so much that I'm terrified that they won't like and criticize, which I can't stand, and partly literature that's too intellectual for them. I'm genuinely sorry if that sounds condescending, it's just that I know nobody who reads anything other than stuff that either is mainstream now (like best-selling mysteries) or was when it originally came out (like Dickens).

Setting fire to the orphanage and watching it burn.

Pretty flames. Pretty flames dancing. Dancing for me.

Dancing for me! DANCING FOR ME DAMN IT!They're my children! MINE!

And that's why I can't recommend it to anyone else. No one else can have them.

As far as games go, I'd probably say Red Ninja: End of Honor, Trapt, God Hand and Killer7 top my list of games I love, but wouldn't really recommend to everyone. Well, those and probably Rumble Roses. *cough*

Very true. Best to let people discover MLP on their own.

I love Dwarf Fortress, but I rarely really recommend it to anyone. Even with a graphical tileset I can totally understand why people are daunted by the sheer scope of that game.

If they show interest though I dive on it like a vulture and link [http://lparchive.org/Dwarf-Fortress-Boatmurdered/Introduction/] stuff [http://www.nzfortress.co.nz/forum/showthread.php?t=20768] like [http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=91093.0] this [http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=25967.0] to show them the insane brilliance that is DF.
