To those who say "It's just a joke, lighten up": Is it a joke? I don't find it funny. The Old Spice and Dos Equis commercials are more about being gentlemanly, adventurous guys, not some ridiculous, inflexible parody of manhood. A real man isn't afraid to do what's right for his family (Should he have one) or try new things (If he does not) Or, for that matter, ride a frigging scooter.

To those who say "It's not sexist": YES, YES IT IS. It is promoting traditional gender roles and ACTIVELY DEGRADING ANY MAN WHO DISAGREES. If that's not sexism, I don't know what is. (And if your retort is "It's not sexist because it doesn't degrade girls" 1. Yes it is, seeing as the message seems to be "MEN should not be riding scooters and if they must they should drive and have their woman cling to them" and 2. It doesn't have to degrade women to be sexist against men.)

To those who say "Adblocking shouldn't be a warning-worthy offense": Well, I don't know what to tell you there.

To the gentleman above me: F YEAH, PAINT THAT SCOOTER BLACK AND *OWN* IT.

Can't stand those ads. Of course they are sexist. Both of the two Slim Jim ads that play. The ambulance one is particularly egregious. You've got the starting time stamp of 4:21. We open on a kinda scuzzy guy who seems to seems really insecure. To the point where he drives around running his siren at any deviation from his personal view of heteronormativity.

So, um, a couple of single, slacker stoners are making a nuisance of themselves? And their doing it in a way I would more associate with fundamental religious people than anything else. It's just such an invasion of "my views of gender roles MUST be obeyed!" I mean if they blare a siren at a guy on a moped, what would they do with two guys on a moped?

The hospital one is just as bad:
Look, this guy refuses to jam his kids into a car that doesn't fit them, and also lacks the financial means to get a family friendly vehicle without getting rid of the overcompensating red sports car of his youth? We need to hospitalize that guy!

The whole thing is just kinda icky. It's kinda reminiscent of so called "morality police" in some Islamic fundamentalist countries. Why would I possibly want to buy a product that reminds me of that?

And for the record, Slim Jims are not even remotely tasty. They are road trip food when the gas station you stop at doesn't have any real jerky.

is it ok to find it interesting that the posts most strongly saying the ads are sexist are all from bronies based on their avatars?

OT: I don't think the slim Jim ads are sexist (and i'm sick of seeing that word every other day)
but they are aggravatingly stupid and I would use them as an excuse to never buy slim jims again but that wont work because I already refuse to buy them cuz they taste like ass. (although TBH I almost laughed at the scooter one just because I hate scooters, but it has nothing to do with them being "unmanly" and more to do with the fact they look stupid, and I cant help but feel like they would suffer greatly in a collision with a particularly large bug let alone a car)

I agree completely. They are sexist, vile, and annoying as hell.
If they don't get taken down soon, I'm going to bust a nut.

I find the slimjim ads sort of amusing, actually. especially the one where a chopper winches the guy out of the engagement party.

OT: are the sexist? I suppose they are, but I have better things to be upset about. And scooters do look stupid. sorry, but they do.

it is unmanly to ride on the back of any girls pink scooter in a little helmet holding on to said girl for dear life. dumb? yes. but common sense.

it is not nessesarily unmanly to ride a girls pink scooter with a little helmet if you are by yourself and owning it though. however, it is very hard to make it manly.

<--- Pub club member. Don't see ads.

Also, advertising is inherently sexist. Like, all of it. Forever. Did you not know this? At this point I don't pay attention to ads, even the extremely racy ones. I don't care.

It's a joke. It's not intended to be taken seriously. Seriously, what's worth complaining about when it comes to this? "Oh no, an ad for beef jerky made a joke that's offensive to people who don't find anything funny unless it's squeaky-clean family fun humour. I'd better make a big deal about it seeing as it's completely necessary."

It is the point, you don't think the Dos Equis commercials have tinges of sexism, or the Old Spice commercials? Or any other product targeted at a young male audience? The commercials are intended to be humorous, especially at this point in time where stand up comedians (who very, very commonly tell sexist, chauvinistic, rude, racist, homophobic, heterophobic, and otherwise offensive jokes) get primetime television shows. It's supposed to be funny and appeal to the part of our humor where we might have a "shocked that someone would even say that" laugh.
I didn't say the commercial was BAD. Or even harmful. But stupid, sexist, and going for shock value? Sure.

There's plenty of sexist stuff out there - and some of it is even aimed towards pleasing women. Like those Old Spice ads. ^^ I love those ads. They're totally sexist, but I love them anyway - because there's a very sexy man wearing very little clothing in them. ^^

Also, they're far better written (and less annoying) than those Slim Jim commercials. :p

I do, and many of them aren't super sexist.

People are allowed to be offended by things you're not. And there may even be good reason for their feelings. If I say something offensive enough here, I'll be banned. So not only am I allowed to be offended by things, but if I say something messed up enough, I'll get banned. I could even give you an example, something that might even offend the heck out of you, but I might even be banned for doing that. Some things are offensive, it's a fact of life.

Manly brony here. The ads aren't sexist, and I think that the hospital one is pretty damn funny. At least, the part about getting over the ex-girlfriend, when the guy knocks on the glass and says, "get over it!" I have yet to see the scooter one, though.

I hate slim jims, but I think that this kind of advertising is quite funny. Although they don't convince me to buy the product, they get me to laugh quite hardily.

I think that there's a disagreement here about the definition of sexist.

The commercials are jokes about stereotypical gender roles, but I don't think that they seriously BELIEVE that men need to be manly and blah blah blah, and that's why I would argue that they aren't sexist, just making *jokes* based on sex and sexual stereotypes.

agreed, however my point was that this is next to nothing compared to what happens IRL all the time, in which that was just a dumb marketing ploy/advertisement, not even meant to be taken as absolute truth in the commercial.

believe me there are plenty of times where i couldn't give two fucks but people around me are highly offended, and i understand it and don't care, but in those cases it's much worse and on a more personal level than this commercial.

Right, and some things aren't worth making a big deal out of. It's not like a guy's going to see this commercial and think "Oh god, am I less of a man if I don't eat Slim Jims? Oh god! I have to go buy some right now!". They're going to think either "Hehe, that's pretty funny." or "Wow, that was pretty stupid.".

And as for the whole scooter thing, it's generally perceived to be a pretty unmanly thing to ride, at least in North America. It's not like Slim Jim is the first one to say this. Honestly, if this is the most offensive thing you see all your life, you must not watch the news. Or TV in general.

Or use anything on the internet but the Escapist.

oh sorry, i probably should have put "/generalized sarcasm statement" at the end. the whole "and it all made sense" was meant to be a smartass sarcastic statement.

and yeah, they are stupid enough to give me a laugh and then move on, they don't personally point out anyone so i don't see how it is so offensive to QQ about but hey, people love to be offended about things i suppose..

Frankly, the Escapist's warnings against users for using blockers just piss me the hell off. Any company that is so fond of owing its contributors rather than paying them is suffering from bigger systemic financial problems than loss of revenue due to adblockers, and their comments and rules on the matter sound like nothing so much as the RIAA's insistence that piracy is the sole cause of failure to make a quarterly profit.
/clap

and also a /clap for whoever pointed out the freudian implications of becoming more manly by shoving a meat stick in your mouth.
Even though the Escapist has just penalised me over mentioning ad blockers, I can easily see why they feel the way they do over the issue. They make their revenue off of ads, so when people utilise means to prevent the ads from appearing at all, they are potentially jeopardising the Escapist's business (Advertising Exec: "What's this, no one watches our ads? Then why should we pay you anything to host them, mr internet site?"). Thus the Escapist is being reasonable in denying services to the people who do that.

Saying all that, I don't like them penalising me in this instance. I didn't actually admit to using adblockers, so I resent them sending me warnings about it.
Actually if it were me, I'd contest the warning because you did not advocate or endorse the use of adblockers.

Whoopsie, that's what I get for not reading the other brony comments first, heh.

We have an accord, then? :3
