people often have stupid ideas of me because i wear tactical shemaghs* and balaclavas 7 months out of the year. i have had professors tell me to remove them even though i wear them open enough to show my face/eyes in class, AND even though colleges DO NOT have dress codes.
they think i am a terrorist or some social reject, but i just want to keep dirt and wind out of my face/eyes. if it scares people away enough for extra legroom on the train, then so be it.
*note: i wear my shemagh the REAL way-- up, and over my head and face, not around my neck like a fucking hipster.

I've been judged for:
- Only reading books in English. What can I say, I can't stand my mothertongue.
- Having glasses.
- Playing videogames.
- Watching anime/cartoons.

And basically everything geeky/nerdy.

Wait...that sounds like you wear them in class too. Because that would be a rather stupid thing to do.

Other than that, yeah those things were made for a reason outside of being terrorist fashion. It'd be nice if people would realise that.

I?m black and I get allot of "what the" and crap for loving Metal bands and rock Music and not rap. It's really sad, to the point I almost hate to mention what I listen to.

I get judged as a mac geek because I bought an iPod touch recently.

I don't own any other mac products, I don't really care about them or their products, I have no loyalty to them, I bought it simply as a gaming device. I enjoy a lot of the casual games on it, and that's it. I don't even have any music on it.

I'd also like to point to the Gamer episode of Extra Credits and point out that I do get slightly annoyed when people call me a Gamer. I'm not a gamer. I'm just a normal dude who plays the occasional video game. I also read, watch TV, enjoy movies, box, cook, any number of things.

I was walking home yesterday and I saw a trail of blood leading up the road. I pointed at it and said to my friend "Is that blood? I think that's blood!"

A woman walking towards us immediately stopped in her tracks, stared at the floor, and muttered at me (in what I would describe as a 'posh' voice) "lower-class shit..."

I was literally speechless. I didn't know what to say until a long time after she'd passed us by. The stuck-up whore! The worst part is, I have no idea what it was about my appearance or behaviour that could have drawn her to this conclusion. I was in school uniform, so it wasn't my clothes. My hair's not particularly outrageous. My voice, whilst definitely Yorkshire-sounding, is neither common nor rough. Apparently she just drew this judgment out of thin air. I guess some people are just like that.

Graaar. It makes me angry.

I like quite a wide range of music, so even though I'm almost definitely going to like some of what anyone likes, people always take the piss out of me for liking the bands they don't like.

The (brown) birthmark that covers a fair amount of my face. The insults and comments I get from randoms in the street I can shrug off, but it always gets to me when people walk up to me and try and give me a card for their plastic surgeon/lawyer.

It might just be that its polite not to have your head covered. Its generally accepted that its rude around many places in the world. I dunno where you live though, but I might be wrong.

And yes, I speak from experience. I love wearing my shemagh on the train. Nobody will go near you. I used to have long hair, but since I cut that off, I need something else to keep away the creepers.

OT:

I got judged for having long hair. Apparently I was a rapist, fancied kids and dead bodies. I was also clearly a serial killer.

Then I cut it off, now I get crap for having facial hair. Apparently I look like a rapist, like I fancy kids and dead bodies. I'm also a serial killer.

They could at the very least change their perceptions a little bit. Its not even a full beard or 'stache thing, its student that hasn't shaved in a month fuzz

Being a bartender (on purpose).
Dropping out of Uni (also on purpose).
Having non-metrosexual hair.
Predominantly wearing black.

All of these things, among others, have at various times been cast as faults.
Interestingly, all of these things have also at various times been listed in my favour.

People are funny like that.

I read Horus Heresy. (Despite not playing the 40k game)

I know all the words to Technologic.

I play TF2, or at least used to play it before the invasion of crappiness.

Wha... what the... that's disgusting, I've heard people be that bigoted towards other races or sexualities but I've never heard of someone being that vicious towards other classes.
I feel your anger!

Some people (and I use that term lightly) seem to have it in their heads that I'm some kind of psychotic serial killer (not even a level-headed one) because I have facial hair, (a ridiculous mustache and goatee) don't meet the verbal garbage quota (that is, almost never shutting your fucking mouth) most everyone else adheres to, don't have that stupid texting addiction the generation I'm supposedly part of is victim to, don't give a toss what others say or think of me, (insecurity being really popular here in the states) and, I guess, I feel different to some would-be jedi.

Most confusing reason, I think, I've asked some people why they twitch/gasp/stifle screams (the eyes give it away every time) when they see me and the answer is generally "I don't know, you're just scary..."

Makes me think bleaching my face and getting a clown wig might be the best way to abate the irrational fear of the spineless cnidarians that walk like men.

----Sort of off topic, but I want to share this----

Hey man,

I used to want to be an RAF Engineering Officer like you, my grandad used to be one. I also used to be in the ATC (Air Training Corps) or air cadets too.

People used to think it was sad, but I'm 23 now and I can't tell you how jealous my real mates are that I've actually flown an aircraft, doing stall turns and loops. Fired many rifles on the ranges that they never can. Been on many RAF bases taking rides in Chinooks. Got first dibs on work experience slots at RAF bases - I remember helping change a tire on a VC-10 - it was awesome. I absolutely loved it. Got to Corporal too :D.

I decided not to join the RAF in the end purely for personal reasons. Even though I've got a Masters degree and studying for a PhD, there's a part of me that still would like to be in the RAF.

All I can say is fuck the people who think its 'sad', they don't have a clue. You'll be so much better for it. I know you weren't coming here for sympathy, I just wanted to share my years experiences 'cause you remind me of myself.

All the best mate.

It was a real "what is this I don't even-" moment for me :p

Especially since I'm not even a particularly "low" class (I have to say it, economic classes are an outdated, callous and ineffective way of evaluating a human being).

...So, ever find out where the blood came from? I think that'd of caught my attention more than any amount of bigotry.

My mom once bitched me out because my signature on a job application wasn't neat enough, she said that my signature would make the managers think that I was lazy, undependable and generally unhirable.
I've also had people, years back, make fun of me for liking to read.

I've been judged because of:

Having facial hair.

Being blonde.

Being able to touch type.

Knowing different parts of a computer (Their names and where they tend to go inside a case and what plugs into what)

Liking Death Metal and its Sub-genres.

Having poor balance (I stumble alot and sway when standing still... Makes me look drunk)

Being able to spell (Seriously... I don't get how some people think)

Enjoying reading books.

Playing chess.

Prefering to go for a walk when waiting for something rather than standing around.

All of the above have created scenarios where people come up to me and ask about stupid things or make stereotypical comments...

I have long hair, but work in the finance district in London. Some of the older, super rich people give me funny looks, like it's illegal to have long hair and be successful, but there you go.

Also age, I hold quite a strong position in the company I work for, and older people get nervous at the thought of a young person being able to control legally and financially sensitive things.

My hair. It goes down a bit past my shoulders (including my fringe), which automatically means that I'm unhygienic, I can't see (even though I push my fringe to the left, and even then I can see through it with my left eye), I cut myself, and all the other typical bullshit judgements. I also get people looking at me like I'm a freak a lot of the time. But that isn't gonna make me cut my hair. Nope. In fact, it encourages me to keep it this way. I'd rather not do what they want me to do.
Also, my music taste automatically means that I hate everyone, again that I cut myself, that I'm depressed, I want to kill things, etc etc etc.
Gaahhh, society.
