oh, god. The Long, Dark Teatime of the Soul, by Douglas Adams. The ending wasn't funny, it was a friggin c*ckblock (I'm not entirely sure if one can curse on the forums...)! AND RIPPING UP A CONTRACT SHOULD NOT NEGATE IT! THAT SHOULD BE A BASIC RULE FOR ALL FORMS OF MEDIA TO FOLLOW! IT'S JUST SO DUMB! I sincerely apologize for the caps.

I'm going to say any series that Robin Hobb has written. They start off so brilliantly in the first book, and then just begin the epic fail in the next books.

I got this book from a library that I thought was going to be a comedy about school. It was a 9/11 book. It's like going into a circus to find a funeral procession.

Doesn't that new book by Dean Koonts have a big-ass paper spider jump out at you at the end?

It sounds like someone ripped off and combined "The Thief Lord" and "Something Wicked this Way Comes"

Time. Travel. Ending. Sure, it's used to great dramatic effect (the whole thing seems to be ending poorly, then everything turns around), but COME ON! Couldn't they have just time-traveled to fight wee child Voldemort and ended the series right there?

Don't get me wrong, I love those books, but that one plot point bugs the crap out of me.
Let me direct you to http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/StableTimeLoop. Little Voldy wasn't killed by time-traveling teenagers, therefore he would never be killed by time-traveling teenagers. The fact that he exists when he does is unchangeable.

any book that was chosen by my school to be required to be read..they nearly all had a massive fail, the odyssey was one that i actually enjoyed reading, otherwise the books were all just too damn unbelievably boring.

to schools:

complete fail on book choices, I hate that we aren't allowed (at least in my school and friends schools) to choose what book we want to read as long as it falls within the guidelines of what you are trying to accomplish.

Actually I think it was The Theif Lord. I might be getting the exact plot summary wrong. But I remember it ending with a magical merry go round of time or something.

Ending the way the Darren Shan saga did. CURSE YOUUUU! You were headed for nigh perfection, and you swerved wildly out to the side! Control yourself Darren!
I've actually been thinking of reading that series. (I'm desperately searching for a good vampire series and so far, Anne Rice's stuff is the best I've run into. But I'm looking for something with a little more heart-pounding action and not so much ' vampire struggling with his blood lust and his morals')

Twilight. Not because it broke vampires for this generation, not because it encourages girls to think that creepy stalkers are sexy and you should long for soulless immortality, but because they are badly written, and the fact they have been pulbished encourages people who really can't write to try and get published, thus possibly breaking books for this generation.

Ahem.

I agree about Maximum Ride book four, but I actually quite enjoyed Book 5, when he got back on topic. Unfortunately, you kind of have to read book four to get book five, but I think it's worth it (just)

I also think he has a tendency of doing it. The Alex Cross books have reached the point of being highly formulaic, easy to predict, and the amount of gore in them has been ramped up to the point where it now no longer makes sense.

I started reading the Pendragon series in 6th Grade and because the books came out sparsely read it up to Freshmen year in High School the books became less and less engaging over time then the author decided to bring a bunch of people who had died back to life because they had special abilities and were magic or some bullshit

Thats my biggest gripe when a main character is dead THEY STAY DEAD! They don't come back through magic I mean there are some exceptions but for the most part I hate it when authors do that.

Wow, lots of Twilight hate...
I think romance novels are different compared to other novels and are ment for certain people (women). I don't see why people hate on Twilight so much more; it's a romance novel, so it's obviously not supposed to be about plots and such. Maybe people don't realise that?
Oh, and about that whole "vampires don't act like that!" arguement about glittering skin and such: vampires aren't real. They don't act a certain way. And it would be worse if they followed the cliches because then the author would be unoriginal like most fantasy writers (stop with the goddamn dwarves, dragons, and elves!).

Also, don't read too much into the Redwall series. There's racist undertones...

I forget the name, but I recall a book where they killed off characters every 5 seconds and added more every 3. Huge mess, plot went off the rails so many times too. The auther probably hadn't planned out very far. <_<

Like everyone else in this thread.
I despise Twilight a.k.a Why Mormon housewives shouldn't write vampire romance novels.

I've heard girls say, 'You should be more like Edward'
So you want me to stalk you and sparkle?

Romance is fine. But the problem with that series is that it's completely shallow love. It's a stalkery possesive lover that only gets away with it all because he's exciting and sexy.
Or at least thats why I hate it.

Yes, while it is a romance novel and is specially made for that kind of thing, I've read good romance novels, (*Experiments with different genres, don't read this kind of thing religiously*) but that one is bad... Characters are pretty generic, plot is generic if you look past the whole vampire aspect, (Having a good plot helps... Alot.) Eh, I think it's a fad because it's simple enough for teens, and that's what they think about during that point in their lives. That's just my opinion though.

Yeah, that's actually how it ends. I remember reading that book when I was in middle school and getting incredibly upset at the ending. If you're going to write a book with magic in it, great. If you're going to write a book with no magic in it, also great. But don't write a realistic book and then insert some ridiculous magical shit at the end.

This is the exact same problem that I have with "The Prestige", which is a movie, but also brings out the magic three quarters of the way through a previously realistic story. They even have the audacity to pretend that their magic is actually science.
