My sister was playing the wii and had the wrist strap on (she broke our tv before), well she let go of the controller again but thanks to the wrist strap it came back and knocked her out. This may not be the dumbest thing ever done in a game but it is still hilarious.
What in the world was she playing?

Fond memories with FF7: I had just beaten the game and was sitting there thinking "So, now what? Should I make a stab at the Weapons? Sure, why not. I´ll just go to North Crater, pick a nice spot and gain some AP. Gotta have me some strong materia." After hours of fighting the same enemies over and over, I start wondering, how long does it take for these buggers to grow. Finally I notice a tiny detail concerning my weapons of choice: No materia growth.

To this day I haven´t beaten any of the weapons, and never will, cause they suck.

(I probably have done lots of stupid things in games, but this instance came to mind first.)

Bought a RTS for a console (mind you, RE3 was only $10 but still).

Touched water in AssCreed 1.

Was playing Shattered Horizon, which has 2 teams: blue and yellow. I always played as blue, autobalance wasn't working, switched to yellow and killed everyone on the team at least 5 times before I realized I was team killing. Quite embarrassing..

Played a mission in Flight Sim X for about 30 minutes before giving up on finding some boat, nose dived into the boat to hear the narrator say "Good job, we've found them! Drop the whatever-we're-dropping!"

Hm.
Anyone remember/ever heard of Interstate '82?
It's a car combat game, and I had just purchased some shiny new carblade cutters.
Anyway, I was randomly checking out a parked car, when my curiosity took over and I walked into the blades jutting from the front of mine...
Yes, you can kill yourself with your own car...

Also in Battlefield 1942, I got cocky in a bomber and tried to loop bomb a tank...
Both bombs flew at least half an inch before they fell on the bottom of my upside-down plane, killing me and my gunner...

Attempting to emulate my friend, who once killed a Hulk in a fistfight.

It didn't work out so well for me.

I got Explorer as my last perk before I bought Broken Steel in Fallout 3, boy, i was madder than a midget with a yo-yo i tell you what.
I wanted that perk, but instead I got a different perk, refill action points after killing someone using VATS. I ended up printing off a giant map.

I spent at least 10 seconds trying to knife my own teammate before I finally realized he was my teammate...I'm glad that only we saw it, he wasn't on my friendlist and we didn't have headsets...so no one else will ever know...unless you're reading this...

Now I finally have something to one-up you!

My stupid mistake was getting addicted to DOTA.

My first day playing Demon's Souls I noticed that corpses got caught between your feet and ragdolled in hilarious ways when you ran over them. My first death was within 1 minute of playing the first real level, trying to kick a dead slave into a fire.

The "stupidest" thing is probably obscured somewhere in the darkest recesses of my memory, but on at least one occasion I've killed myself with a Sentry Gun Air-drop in MW2 while staring at the falling box.

All the time on Fire Emblem, i get to the end of a hard chapter and i end up putting a unit next to the boss to soak up some EXP without comparing their stats......bad idea.
haha are you like me, where you can't stand to lose even a single person throughout the entire game? Im' like that too. If even the most useless character dies, one that I'll never use again, I have to restart the level, no matter how far I've made it.
OT: Fire Emblem, deciding a certain character won't help me in a level and is only in danger of dying, so leaving them at the beginning of a level for safety only to have enemy reinforcements appear on my exact starting position after the rest of my forces made it halfway across the map. Then having to restart.

In Halo 3 I threw a spike grenade at some unsuspecting players back, but I missed and the grenade stuck on the wall, blew up, and I killed myself.
