Buying Spore on release day for $70. That would have been a disaster, except I sold it to someone else for $60 after installing it once so it wasn't a major waste.
In-game, probably the dumbest thing would be the time I tried to single-handedly take on 80 Confederate soldiers. With a musket. After I loaded my save, I realized that it was supposed to be a stealth mission.

Was playing WoW, doing Heroic Halls of Reflection. The rest of my group, including my pet, were dead and Falric was chasing me with only 2k health left. I go to click [Kill Shot] because I'm thinking I can be the Sole Survivor Super Savior of the group. I look up at Falric, then back down at my Action Bar... instead of hitting [Kill Shot] and ending it right then and there, I hit [Tranquilizing Shot]on accident. Falric literally walks over to me after totally ignoring the shot, and rips me a new one. Half of the group is /facepalming themselves to death and the other half have their jaws on the floor in pure shock at my fail.
