I'm not a fan of anime, but I love Ninja Scroll.

I also really enjoyed Wicked City, Vampire Hunter D, Akira, Afro Samurai, Princess Mononoke and Graveyard of Fireflies. Also love the Spawn animated series. There's been others I liked, but I can't think of thier names. Note, I'm a movie fanatic; not into series so much.

Last night (I think) I was on a bunch of Anime related threads disputing a number of things with anime fans including the english language, trolling, how to spell Hannah, the quote button and why I don't like anime (I keep wanting to put a capital A at in anime for some reason). Now I said at one point (I think) that I have tried to like anime or at least find out what the big deal was about it in the past and failed to do so. But mabye I was going about it the wrong way so what would you suggest to someone who has hated the subject for years but would be interested to find out if I could like it?

Oh and as a side note I cannot stand subtitles on anything so I don't think any of the non-translated stuff that alot of people seem to enjoy would work for me.
Well, tough luck for you pal, because all the good ones are subtitled. Rarely do anime remain as great when it gets dubbed. The only good English-dubbed ones I can recall are Full Metal Alchemist and Cowboy Bebop.

Snip list
The only way this post could be better is if the listing was made alphabetical. Or if it included Grave of the Fireflies. I guarantee you, the last few minutes of that will leave you WEEPING.

Afro Samurai

This the only anime that I ever bothered watching, and as a plus you have the awesomeness of Samule L. Jackson's voice as the titular character.

So yeah, I win.
Yes, Afro Samurai is awsome on all accounts and I would recommend it if you want something made of win.

If you like Robots then I would suggest Gundam 0083 or Robotech, particularly the Macross saga. If you like having your heartstrings pulled then Kaishaku's recent works( since '03) are for you. If you enjoy being preached too and get some enjoyment out of constant whining and self pity (I know I don't, but maybe you do, I'm trying to cover everything) then Gundam Seed and it's just as half assed sequel are for you (to me Gundam is dead, it's the franchise that liberal politics killed). Of course there is also Dragon Ball Z if you're a martial arts guru and Samurai Shamploo if you like sword fights. If you are a christian or not a radical militant atheist you should check out Chrono Crusade and if you are in it for the lulz then The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya is for you once you get past the magiteck sciency crap.

For those who have sair "...Fullmetal Alchemist..." i say "NOOO!!!!". Fullmetal Alchemist is an awesome manga and if you want to, you can read that. But for the love of all that is holy do not watch the original anime, it sucks balls. The new version, "Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood", is good, it varies slightly from the manga but that is just in an attempt to dis-associate itself from the original anime, you should watch that.

That or GTO (Great Teacher Onizuka), can't belive it hasnt been said allredy.

Trigun. I don't normally like anime, but my girlfriend got me watching that one, and it was really good... The first two episodes or so are pretty standard, but once you get a few episodes into it you'll have a hard time to stop watching.

Here are a few different animes that i have really enjoyed over the years.

Ranma 1/2 (an older but simply hilarious Martial arts comedy.)

Hale + Guu (a bit on the Weird side but still. very funny. very likable characters)

Galaxy Angel (cashes in a few man points. altho cutesy at times it has short funny plots. a just the right amount of fan service *nod*... Not to mention a very very catchy song)

Sure my picks arnt the same old mainstream blahh blahh blahh but i have spent many a nights enjoying them. I'll try to think of some more.

PS. i do like mainstream too >.> Bleach, Naruto, ect.

EDIT::

Hellsing and Elfen Lied. Especially Elfen Lied.
Go with Elfen Lied, it's great.
I would say go with Hellsing, but I've never bothered with it yet.

FullMetal Alchemist and Togari are really good ones as well.

I probably just lost all my man-points with everyone here, but Princess Tutu is worth forther investigation. Just stay with it until the second season. Like many of you are probably thinking, I, too, thought that there was no possible way that it could be good, but I have found a diagram that shows how my opinion has changed.

I'm watching it, just because of that picture.

Also, So Long, Mr. Despair or Welcome to the NHK. Both of them really good shows.

EDIT: So Long, Mr. Despair is mostly known as Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei.

You might want to give the Japanese name of the first, which is what most folks know it by: it's called Sayonara Zetsubo Sensei.

EDIT: Also, I have to say that Princess Tutu intrigues me, if only for this [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Me7eRdsw1zQ&feature=channel] interesting AMV I found a while back. I still haven't watched it, but it's probably halfway decent at least.

A friend of me likes Death Note.
I have not seen it but it sounds good.
Good Choices.

Hellsing - for Blood and action
Death Note - for cleaver plotline and supernaturality
or
Bleach or One Piece - both for action, comedy and lovable characters with superpowers.
