Watch Tonari no Kaibutsukunn (aka My Little Monster). Its both dramatic and romantic, but incredibly upbeat and optimistic. It manages to achieve deep emotional moments without delving into excessive melodrama, and do great comedy without being hammy or puny.
And don't forget Nagoya... -_- Though the series ends rather abruptly.

OT: Gankutsuou - le Comte de Monte Cristo in futuristic anime form.
Maybe Bamboo Blade as well (lazy animation, but pretty good story... and Ando Yuri is kinda funny)

2. Full Metal Alchemist (obviously, also both versions)
3. Fate Zero
4. Gundam Seed (original)
5. Castle in the Sky
6. Final Fantasy 10, no seriously FF10.

To be fair that's how the manga ends the fourth volume(the last one before the time skip),and it's slice of life so that kind of ending tends to happen.
Yeah, I know, I read the manga. Just wanted to point that out.

Most of the greats have been recommended so I'll go with one that's perfect yet kinda odd.

A time travel anime that hits every key.
I'd liken it to Darker Than Black in its tone but it's has a kind of calm terror at times instead of action sequences.
Just watch it and you wont be disappointed.
You had me at "liken it to Darker than Black". Looks pretty interesting. This one's at the top of the list so far.

Good choice, good choice indeed, it is my recommendation as well. Mixes comedy and drama perfectly, a thriller with a sweet plot and phenomenal characters with excellent development.

The thing is though, you watched Phantom: Requiem for the Phantom, an anime that was penned by a dude called Urobuchi Gen, nicknamed the "Urobutcher". So yeah, most of his works tend to end quite depressingly.

Since you are a gamer who happens to like anime, I'm also recommending Welcome to the NHK. A good watch if I ever knew one.

...I really should watch the Phantom anime adaptation at some point. I'd usually stick with Urobuchi's original game (even have an English copy), but the translation is terrible, and the Interactive DVD format even worse.

OT: Usagi Drop [http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/review/usagi-dropr] is quite heartwarming, yet dramatic in its own quiet ways. Though switching directly from Urobuchi's world view to it might induce diabetes.

Well, if you don't mind goriness (which is necessary to the concept, so they aren't just piling it on for shits and giggles) I can't recommend Deadman Wonderland enough, BUT

The ending is kind of weird. Because the manga it's based on is still ongoing and I think it's made with the possibility of a second season in mind. The two main characters get what they want, though, but it is more a cliffhanger than an ending.

It's also got the best characters I've seen in an anime.

Edit: My avatar is from it.

Have you watched Baccano! yet?

I would class it as a dramatic anime. Shame it's so short.

I've made a "Suggest an Anime" thread in the past, but this time I'm looking for something a bit more specific. You see, it's just my luck that every time I pick a new anime to watch it will likely have an incredibly sad ending. I usually don't have a problem with these kinds of stories as tragic endings can be quite beautiful if done right, however after finishing Phantom: Requiem for the Phantom tonight my heart is a bit more weary than usual and I could really use a pick-me-up. I'm not really asking for a lighthearted fun anime, but rather a dramatic, mature anime that despite everything that happens to the characters ends on a positive note. It can be a bittersweet ending, but I really need more sweet than bitter right now.

Thanks in advance guys :3
I suggest beck mongolian chop squad dramatic and fun and good music if you haven't seen this I suggest you check it out

Spice and Wolf. It's fairly light, has a good dose of drama, character development and medieval economics... Yeah, that last one was kinda odd too me too, but they actually made it interesting in my opinion. Also, happy endings all around.

I recommend Revolutionary Girl Utena, my all time favorite anime. Basically think of the show as a modern re-imagining of a classic fairy tale, chock full of symbolism and so many little details in it that you catch more as you re-watch it each time.

It starts out pretty light hearted, gradually getting darker as you go. By the time the 3rd arc comes around, there's some fucked up shit that happens to the characters, but the payoff in the end is VERY triumphant.

Hmm...I'm not sure whether or not I should recommend Chuunibyou Demo Koi ga Shitai!, because it's a fantastic show with drama and everything, and is only 12 episodes long.

The thing about it is that it is fairly lighthearted and fun, but at the same time is a lot more..."real" than most anime that I've seen, though I am by no means an expert. If you've ever played/experienced Katawa Shoujo, then you will probably understand what I mean, and I highly recommend Chu-2 to anyone that is a fan of KS, as their story/theming and especially the character development is incredibly similar. I found it easy to invest in the characters, and found the ending to be rather beautiful. Hell, it might as well have been an anime based on a specific route through a Visual Novel (specifically, one like Katawa Shoujo).

There is a note about the drama that might be a slight spoiler, though:

The REAL KS-type drama doesn't start until fairly late in the already-short series, but, in my opinion, it makes it all the more real and emotional, since it mirrors the way normal human drama happens: Largely without obvious warning. There's definitely a tone shift that some people say was very abrupt, but I found it to be well-played.

One of the things about this anime is that, in universe, "magic" and supernatural stuff doesn't exist. Everything that happens is between regular (well, "regular") people. That isn't to say that there isn't suspense/action or that their mind's eye isn't shown to the audience, though that last part will only make sense once you've seen the intro of the first episode.

I love it, though I'm not sure that it will be quite what you're looking for. At the very least, it's pretty short. If you feel up to it, the first episode explains the universe pretty well, to see if it's up your alley.

Disclaimer: I know basically nothing about anime outside of the well-known stuff. Edit: Hell, I don't even know what the line between "lighthearted" and not is.

I snooped around the posts on this thread, and well, you`ve gotten a lot of great suggestions already.
The ones that I`d recommend as well are Usagi Drop, Baccano!, BECK, Clannad and Clannad: After Story (tho that can get very emotionally wrecking). Spice and Wolf is good, as well, and so is Steins;Gate.

Two that i really want to suggest are Ano Hana and Hanbun no Tsuki ga Noboru Sora. Both are quite short ( the first one is 11, and the second one is only 6 episodes long), but i found them really damn enjoyable.

If i had to pick one, I´d go with Hanbun no Tsuki. I mean, after all, it`s only 6 episodes, so if it`s not what you`re looking for, you wouldn´t had wasted much time on it, anyways. Tho i would not call watching it a waste of time, since i really, really liked it. I think it fits your demands quite well. I think. So, yeah. Go give it a try, is what I´m saying!
