Now, I am primarily a console gamer, the reason for this, however, is not because I have any particular fondness for consoles over the computer, but mostly because I simply can't afford a top of the line gaming computer. Nonetheless, I do still feel the desire to play a computer game from time to time, and that, dear friends, is why I have come to you.

What I'm working with here is a laptop that really can't handle much. I play the Sims 2 sometimes, and usually that's fine, though it can start to run a little slow when I build a really big house. So, thinking in terms of "games that would put less stress on my computer than the Sims 2" is a handy approach. All that said, because I've never really had a good gaming computer, I've never really learned a lot about all the computer games that are available.

That's where you all come in, suggest some good games that my computer could handle without hacking up a processor before dying a slow and painful death. I like a lot of variety in my gaming diet, so go ahead and suggest anything you've enjoyed. I was thinking of possibly downloading the first Fallout off of Steam, but before I went ahead and did that, I thought I'd come here and ask if anyone had any better ideas. That said, suggest away, I'm all ears.

Knights of the Old Republic?
Morrowind?
Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee?

Just to name a few.
Also, the first fallout, yes!

Dawn of war? A fun RTS that I could play on my computer that could only just run Sims 2. Try ones like Half-Life and C&C Red Alert 2 (as an aside RA3 is on sale on Steam today along with other C&C games).

I tried running TF2 on my pretty new midrange laptop and didn't have much luck, runs way better on my mac haha. However you could try TFC (Team Fortress Classic) off Steam. And definitely get Fallout 1 + 2.

Hope you like turn-based games, because there's the Exile, Avernum and Geneforge series at SpiderWeb.

Failing that, the original Fallout owns. I always enjoyed Quake 2, but good luck finding that (well I suppose it's on Steam).

The Jedi Knight series is good, especially Jedi Outcast.

RTS classics Total Annihilation and Starcraft both run well on that kind of PC.
For role-playing games, Fallout 1 and System Shock 2 are hard to beat, also late 90s games you should be able to handle with no problem.
Pretty much any indie game except maybe Braid will run on a low-spec computer - if you're a politics dork like me, check out Democracy.
