*runs in* System Shock 2! Also System Shock 1.

SS2 ran on my original computer- a P120 with a "classic" 3DFX card. 1.35 million triangles per second, baby! I think my mobile phone could outrun it now.

There's always emulators - no legal issues if you've got the console and games in the attic, and Super Mario 3 is so awesome they just released it again ;)

Dwarf Fortress
That game actually puts a ton of stress on computers, in my experience. Depending on the number of dwarfs and the size of the fortress and stuff, it could easily trump The Sims 2.

Also, X-Com: UFO Defense. [http://store.steampowered.com/app/7760/] It's a turn-based strategy game released in '93 and is one of my favorite video games ever. If you like money management, base management, and turn-based strategy, this is a great game for you to have.

Now, I am primarily a console gamer, the reason for this, however, is not because I have any particular fondness for consoles over the computer, but mostly because I simply can't afford a top of the line gaming computer. Nonetheless, I do still feel the desire to play a computer game from time to time, and that, dear friends, is why I have come to you.

What I'm working with here is a laptop that really can't handle much. I play the Sims 2 sometimes, and usually that's fine, though it can start to run a little slow when I build a really big house. So, thinking in terms of "games that would put less stress on my computer than the Sims 2" is a handy approach. All that said, because I've never really had a good gaming computer, I've never really learned a lot about all the computer games that are available.

That's where you all come in, suggest some good games that my computer could handle without hacking up a processor before dying a slow and painful death. I like a lot of variety in my gaming diet, so go ahead and suggest anything you've enjoyed. I was thinking of possibly downloading the first Fallout off of Steam, but before I went ahead and did that, I thought I'd come here and ask if anyone had any better ideas. That said, suggest away, I'm all ears.

World of Goo
Starcraft
Diablo 1 and 2
Star Wars: Jedi Academy (just restarted this recently, and have been having lots of fun chopping people's limbs off.)
Kotor, if you can play that.
Deus Ex
Warcraft 3
Age of Empires 2
Halo (the original one)

All good choices. Go forth and conquer. Also, I refer you to xkcd.

Generally speaking, anything gog.com sells, except perhaps King's Bounty and Driver: Parallel Lines.

Fallout 1 and 2 work fine on systems with low graphical capabilities. My system almost crashed when I tried loading Portal, but I've spent the last few days having a ball with the first Fallout.

Half-Life. If your computer can take the Sims 2, it can handle Half-Life :)

Trying not to repeat what others have reccomended lets go alittle more obscure then.

Warcraft III and TFT, I blow at RTS and it's still fully playable fun story, fun units and dripping with 80s pop culture humour. Gothic II is nice although really dated, Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines Impossible to find and buggy as hell if but you do manage to a freaking classic looks like it's graphics intensive but it's really not, fairly well optimised. Uhh Titans quest? It's pretty much Diablo II lite not bad but meh.

Most of the stuff on here. [http://www.gog.com/en/frontpage/]
Supporting this almost everything on that page is awsome, NOT Vampire the Masquerade Redemption however titanic piece of shit. Bloodlines classic, Redemption can go to hell.
