Yeah I'd go with most and recommend either Just Cause 2, The Saboteur, Saint's Row 2, or Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction. Avoid Mercenaries 2 like the plague.

Also for a Sandbox game you never even knew you needed, check out Mount and Blade: Warband. Probably the ultimate sandbox for 'choosing your own path' alongside Sid Meier's Pirates! Doesn't have explosions, but does have rain of arrows, and all the bloodthirsty sword fighting you could ever handle, in 3rd OR 1st person. Manliest game ever made.

far cry 2 is loads of fun if you dont mind really long drives and constant assault truck ambushes. you can set the savannah on fire! it's awesome!
Its not that open world I found. But still get it as it is amazing.

I'd say saints row 2 never played it but it seems to have loads of stuff to do.

Just Cause 2.

As open world as you can get, ridiculous levels of chaos (literally) and also the grapple hook.

Go forth and attach pedestrians to fast moving objects
Yea you can't get more open world than this game, the world is almost a small continent its so large!

I love blowing stuff up, no seriously, you have no idea how much i love blowing stuff up
Sounds like what you want is Saints Row 2 or Just Cause 2. No seriously, both those games embody exactly what you want, I know cause I love them for the same reason. Just Cause 2 is more about blowing shit up, but Saints Row 2 is kinda mayhem on a more personal level. Either one you're set for weeks.

Bully, you get firecrackers and can prank people with them. You get a bottle rocket launcher too. Plus, the game is just fun. It's the most fun open world game I've played, and that includes Saint's Row 2.

What he said, and when you get bored you can do the main missions and ride nuclear warheads.

Just Cause 2...Fucking huge map! And near enough endless amount of crap to blow up.

Fallout 3 also springs to mind (Also NV but play that at your own risk :p )

And then we have Prototype, and Assasins Creed (although you can't blow stuff up in that)

You will not kill carps, you will be violently murdered by them. User interface could use some work, though.
OT: Mount & Blade: Warband, and 15000 associated mods for it.
Including one that turns it into an FPS set in the war of 1812.

Saints Row 2.

It has an involving story to follow, but unlike GTA4, isn't the only thing you can do successfully (Bummed me out when I realized that GTA4 is not the "grab a tank and wreak havoc upon the city" kind of game that GTA3 through to San Andreas were).
The missions are fun, varied, and sometimes quite original. The mini-games/ side-missions are fun and reward you for beating the successive difficulty curve by giving you ridiculously awesome weapons/ vehicles/ and upgrades (Note: Getting the ultimate accuracy and unlimited ammo for machine guns makes the combat a fun cakewalk XD!).

So yeah, you can progress the story by blowing stuff up, or you can be rewarded for blowing up stuff whenever you want to.

Minecraft. Bout as open world as you can get. I've sunk hours into that game. Very good buy to just kill time if your bored.
