I've been listening to metal as long as I can remember. However a few years back I got into melo death and now it is my favorite sub genre. I love bands such as older In Flames, At the Gates, Kalmah, Wintersun, Insomnium, Amon Amarth, and a few others. What other bands would you recommend I check out?

I used to listen to a lot of Dark Tranquillity and Eucharist. I still like the genre but can't take too much of it anymore, it's such a limited genre and too predictable.

>Melodic

>Death metal

Pick one :D

I doubt it fits int eh genre, but Nightwish is pretty good if your after something with bit of orchestral backing.

Here's a few I love that you didn't put in the OP.

First, This Cold Life. Love these guys and I love that they exist. It's just two guys, one in Germany and one in America, united by YouTube and making music together. How awesome is that?

Second, The Neologist. The vocalist from This Cold Life's other band in which he does vocals and guitars, and his mate does drums and bass.

Next, Dimension Zero. This is the only song of theirs I know, but I love it.

Omnium Gatherum. Awesome band. That's all I got.

Dethklok. Some of their stuff is full on death metal, but every now and again we get a melodeath piece. Great band, love the show.

Avatar. These guys are ok, but not the best melodeath I've ever heard. Still alright though.

Before the Dawn. Not much to say, good band.

Blinded Colony. These guys are alright. Some stuff is a bit metalcore-y I guess, but they're still mostly melodeath.

There's a few. Enjoy!

Honestly, I'm not a big fan of melodeath, but there are a few bands that I like.

Septic Flesh. Awesome band, and is actually heavy, which is kind of rare for melodeath bands. They also put on an awesome live show.

Hypocrisy. I don't know much about this band, other than that their album A Taste of Extreme Divinity is pretty damn good.

Some Mercenary is alright, although I'm honestly not a fan of the vocals. Worth checking out, though.

What I've heard from Noumena has been pretty good.

Well, melo-death really isn't my forte at all, though I do enjoy Amon Amarth. However, may I recommend some melodic death metal that was recorded before the famous Gothenburg sound kicked off? Some primitive melo-death, if you will. I give you the mighty Crypt of Kerberos! This song is the recording off their 1992 Cyclone of Insanity EP. They released their first and only full-length the following year, though it wasn't as good in my opinion.

Note: The production quality isn't crystal clear or high budget like you may be used to for melo-death. This recording was from a young Swedish band still in their demo-era. So just be mindful of that. Personally, I prefer this style of production sound (sounds more powerful and intense).

Not read the thread so sorry if I repeat some that have already been said.

Darkest Hour
Be'Lakor
Omnium Gatherum
My Endless Wishes
Eternal Tears of Sorrow
In Mourning
Satariel
Quo Vadis
Serenity In Murder
Xerath
Soilwork
Sonic Syndicate
Arch Enemy
Obscura (Though they lean more towards Tech Death these days)
Kambrium
Ikuinen Kaamos (Though they tend to be classed as Black Metal these days)
Opeth (Prog melo-death)
Septic Flesh
Insomnium's early material, much better than the latter.
Shadow's Fall
Avatar

Other than this:

But I am guessing you are looking more for something like this going by your choices...

I can't really recommend stuff in the Melodic Death Metal department, it is not a genre I particularly enjoy. I can give you a list of melodic Black metal though:

Swallow the Sun.

They're amazing. I'd suggest (if you have the patience) that you start with their 34 minute magnum opus, A Plague of Butterflies.
Yes. Swallow the Sun is great.

Okera is pretty amazing, tho they are more on the doom/progressive side of things.

Check out Eternal Tears of Sorrow. I know some members from ETOS are in Kalmah now so If you like Kalmah's newer stuff you'd like some ETOS old stuff :)

Then you have these new guys from Australia. Amazing stuff.

I really suck at music genres, so I don't know what separates "death metal" from other kinds of metal. Melodic metal, I can do. Nightwish is a big one; Sonata Arctica I think, Within Temptation is lighter than Nightwish but still awesome.

After the burial:

Periphery (this one is very personal to the members)

I'm not really sure what melodic death metal is, so I just went with what I consider to be slightly heavier metal. Also definitely check out most of the bands mentioned here, they're really varied and awesome.

I can't believe no one has mentioned 'Mors Pricipium Est' yet, absolutely amazing band. Other then that I think most of the other great Melodic Death Metal bands have already been mentioned.
