At least I think so. I like it more than its sequels or Super Mario World, I don't think it's nostalgia speaking because I didn't grow up playing this game, only finished it a year ago. It's still a zen experience, with just the right amount of difficulty to keep you going forward through the game. It's distinctive visual style hasn't really aged too much for me, believe it or not and its controls are great.

It's a classic in every sense of the word.

Iconic music, characters, enemies, levels, items. It's "The Beatles" of video games, it'll never die.

The original game is awesome. The 8 bit music is good in originality for the time. It has length and hardness but not to bad.

It's a classic. It is to platformers as Civilization is to 4X games: not the first by any means, but the one that really cemented the genre into what it is today.

Super Mario Land (GameBoy, 1989) was one of my first games. I loved the hell out of it - at the time.

Not sure if I could go back to it now, though. I'm not particularly fond of platformers anymore. While I can respect Mario's place in the 'Classic' section of gaming history as a whole, I don't think I'd put it in my personal 'Classic' category. I just don't really have a strong enough nostalgia bond with it to get past my lack of interest in platformers.

I still enjoy Mario Bros, I like both the new and the old games. I grew up and they're still fun for me. It's good to see I'm not the only one.

Seems kind of odd to just spontaneously up and make a "Mario Rocks" thread though.

It's really a shame that the newer stuff is nowhere near as hard (not even counting The Lost Levels), and tries to be all the more kiddie. You can't even get Mr. Fuzzy to- You know what? I'll let the rest of you find that out for yourselves in Yoshi's Island.

Personally, I actually prefer Super Mario World over all the rest.

Y'know which one I loved? Well I don't. It was the Six Golden Coins one, or whatever it was.

I haven't played that game in like 15 years, yet it still stands out to me. I still remember one of the bosses were the 3 little pigs that you fight inside a giant mecha-mario.

I loved that game.

Oh man, I had that for Gameboy Pocket. The star level still haunts my darkest nightmares... Granted, that was played as a young child, but still. Holy crap. I went through over 100 lives before I beat that...

Super Mario Brothers, Super Mario Brothers 3 (my personal favorite 2D platformer), and Super Mario World are all classics and are still great today.

Every now and then I'll plug in the old SNES and enjoy SMW. Mario 1 and 2 are still good games too, but things like not being able to walk to the left or crush enemies with a well-placed jump kinda changes how much I enjoy them now. Mario 3 is a great game too, but because I know all the secrets, I can't resist cheating and getting to World 8 in 5 minutes. When I do resist the urge, I feel many of the levels are just too short, so the pacing is just off for me.

Super Mario Bros is proof that simple, elegant game design, backed by a creative aesthetic, is everlasting.

Just look at New Super Mario Bros. Apart from improved graphics and a few extra gadgets, it is functionally the same game, yet its the best selling game on the DS, arguably one of the best on the system and the third best selling non-bundled game of all time.

There were a lot of Nintendo games I've tried that are like that. Give Mega-Man a shot if you have the chance! I never played Mega Man 2 as a kid but I'm really getting into it...or I would be if my NES wasn't being a jerk to me at the moment. Ninja Gaiden is another one I didn't have as a kid but it's a ton of fun (when it isn't kicking my ass, freaking stage 6-2).
